What would the tuners out there feel is the ideal transfer port dia.for a .22 Disco in terms of shot count, velocity, noise control?
Thanks and regards, John in N. J.

If you plan to tune for moderate power (i.e., ~14fpe in .177 - ~16fpe in .22)...

...I don't think there's much to be gained from modifying the stock porting. However, an HDD will improve shot count and reduce noise substantially.
If you plan on reducing power (e.g., to 12fpe), a smaller port would be helpful. But so would grinding some weight off the hammer.

Give MAC1 a call...

Tim has set up Disco's from 12fpe up to 30fpe with very good results on consistency.
Sound wise, I don't think anything other than an attachment on the end of your muzzle is going to make a significant difference in sound control if keeping neighbors happy is a concern.
Even regulated sub 12fpe pcp rifles have a fair amount of muzzle report that would not be considered quiet by any means without a moderator or shroud on it.

Why don't you tell it to Crosman?
July 4 2009, 8:58 AM
You know, convince them to put it on the tube like they did with the Marauder? And put it in their literature?
Then you wouldn't have to keep repeating this over and over and over to folks that aren't buying into it.
If you ever were an engineer in a company like Crosman I should think you'd know that important specifications like MWP are set by Engineering staff, not a Customer Service tech over the phone. Or customers with an agenda. At least that's how I've seen it done......
And maybe you could get them to stop filling the same gun to 3000 psi with the A Team? Safe is safe after all, and MWP should be the same no matter what the stock looks like......

Is that how it works in your world, Doug? You tell the manufacturer what the MWP...
July 4 2009, 9:58 AM
...of his product is? To each his own, I suppose.
Personally, I'd rather let the manufacturer tell me - as Crosman has re: the Disco - both with crystal clear "DO NOT ... Overfill" verbage in the manual, and via Customer Service in response to a simple question. And in both cases the one and only number mentioned is: 2000psi.
As for continuous attempts to change the subject from the Max. pressure rating of production Discos to imagined "agendas" and different guns and prototype development, I'd say that itself speaks pretty loudly of an "agenda."

No thanks, you're the expert....

You're the champ at putting words in folk's mouths IMO. I'll let you do it.
And as far as strawmen and other distractions from the topic goes, my hat's off to you again. I won't try to fight over my weight, I'll let readers decide who has an agenda and who doesn't if you'll not distract us and respond to the points you're avoiding:
* Is the tube engraved like the Marauder, and does the manual include the magic words ("Maximum Working Pressure")?
* Is this an Engineering spec? (then where is it published?)
* Why does the factory sponsor the A Team violating this important safety spec? (that is can others do it and still be safe?).
I'm sure you're no more inclined to do so now than before, but I thought I'd ask all the same.

Definitely contact MAC1 who actually runs a full time airgun business
July 2 2009, 4:47 PM
designing, making, customizing and servicing various airguns. Been doing this for 3 generations so the experience and knowledge is there. Be wary of the sideline/sideshow operations.
Another outfit that can help you is Roy Weid/Mountain Air that specializes in customizing Crosmans/Benjamins and other air rifles.
The power level/tuning work you are interested is right in their skillset.

Tony is correct, get a hold of Mac1

Not really a fan of pimping tuners, giving them my money is enough Planning on taking some of theirs soon!
However Tim McMurray, cantankerous as he may often be rumored to be, is actually a gem of a guy if your courteous and polite. I don't know what I was expecting when I called him, but I ended up liking the guy. I had to press a little to get the power I wanted for hunting and he was still a total gentleman.
Wouldn't hesitate to do business again!
Just think old fashioned manners .... and not too much bs.
Mac1 set me up at around 30 ftpds or so and I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER.

27 ft / lb
July 3 2009, 10:01 AM
I have a Mac1 prepped .22 caliber that I had adjusted to 27 ft/lb by doing nothing more than adjusting the power adjusting screw. I never fill over 2000 psi.
The consistant shot count dropped to about ten shots @ 27 ft/lb and it got loud enough to overide my dust collector.
I have found a sweet spot at 23.4 ft/lb @ 15 and that is where I will leave it.
Twenty very consistant shots and much quieter.
You can get the power you want from a Mac1 prepped Disco but, the shot count will suffer. It is a trade off and depends on what you want from your gun.
I don`t know if this is good or not but i`m satisfied.

I have no plans to fiddle around with the power setting to "stretch shot count",as i got exactly what I needed for how I'm going to use this rifle...
40 yards...shooting from sticks...POA on bean can was "blue Frjoles"...group on cardboard..same yardage..jerked one at 10 o'clock..

power range
July 4 2009, 8:50 AM
My point exactly Rich.
He can get the power he wants from a standard Mac1 prepped Disco.
Don`t know about a stock Disco.
I bet John can get the power he wants by just adding a power adjuster and not changing the transfer port.

Factory Discovery performance
July 4 2009, 2:21 PM
This is what my stock Discovery is doing for twenty rounds with 16 grain JSBs. Start pressure is 2000, end 1000. It's doing about 22 fpe, rather than the 20 I was looking for, but I see no reason to change anything. It groups really tight and has taken California ground squirrels way on out there.
