Scope or Iron Sights?

In my military training in Australia, i have always only used scope sights for both our rifles and light machine guns,

Has anyone here used both?, if so which is better?

I have a bias towards scopes even at only 1.5 magnification, due to the fact that you can shoot quicker, ie, adjust shots quicker, and see allot more around you.

a scope reduces your natural field of view, and would if you were not well trained and had both eyes open expose you to only paying attention to what is happening some 200-900 meters away.

Scope is a nice add on, but you need to be 1st trained with Iron Sight.
After all the scope can easily get scratch or brake in combat, but the Iron sight will alwys be there.

VATANI, have you ever used the Dragunov? Is that also used in the Army or is that strictly IRGC?

I suppose a magnafied sight would be much better, and i imagine an iron sight would be very innaccuate, and a scope could also act as binoculers.

Im talking about the styer rifle scope.

In the Canadian army we use the Elcan C72 4x Optical sight on our rifles and one of our machine guns (C9). I have never had much of a problem using the sight on the rifle and keeping a decent knowledge of what's going on around me.

The one thing I never understood however, was why they put a sight on a machine gun. It's not meant to be a weapon of accuracy. It's a support weapon.

The only 'sight' I used on a LMG (Negev), was laser sight, no scopes.
on our personal rifles we used both scopes and iron sights. I think I would rather be without scopes on many operational occasions, unless we are talking about moderate to long fire exchange.

If the scope is a decent one such as aimpoint or ACOG then it's a obvious advantage to a well trained solider than a typical iron sight. Most buddies i know perfer a iron sight to the ELCAN. It's fine for looking through and observing but the dammed thing loses 0 constantly. For me the best choice is a open sight like ecotech.

An added bonus to scopes is that it's a lot easier to keep both eyes open while looking through a scope than an iron sight.

I prefer iron sights, designated marksmen should have scopes though, with our M-16s/M-4s the sights are easy to use with both eyes open.

Kalashnikovs, from what I have used, the iron sights suck, and hard to use with both eyes open, the last time I've seen sights like that were on varmint hunting rifles.
