I'm in UofT right now for commerce and specilization in finance. I'm thinking about joining for a minimum contract of 3 years after I graduate. I've always wanted to serve in the armed forces since I was a kid. Do you guys know what the requirements are to get in? And what kind of benefits they can offer to a university student like me?

COw, you might want to ask this question where it is more readily seen in the Den or somwhere with more trafic... just a suggestion.
Siege of Tobruk - One German POW said: "I cannot understand you Australians. In Poland, France, and Belgium, once the tanks got through the soldiers took it for granted that they were beaten. But you are like demons. The tanks break through and your infantry still keep fighting." Rommel wrote of seeing "a batch of some fifty or sixty Australian prisoners ... marched off close behind us—immensely big and powerful men, who without question represented an elite formation of the British Empire, a fact that was also evident in battle."

The requirements to get in are fairly simple. You must be a Canadian citizen, a clean criminal record for the past 6 months, must be in good physical condition.
If you have any questions, let me know and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability.
Also, have you tried contacting your local CFRC?

Its a great resource, and the message board is filled with current and retired CF personnel. Be sure to search for your question before asking though. Chances are, it's been asked, and answered many times.

hmm...are you think reg force or reserves.
im a mcgill university student (so obviously better than UofT, but not all of us can go tom cgill now eh? jks) so you could be in the same situation as me. you are eligible to become an officer (an officer cadet).
so heres what im upto:
i was thinking going in the reg force, but thats after i graduate. As a regular force engineer, im eligible to get a $40 000 bonus when i sign up as an engineering officer. but thats because engineers are in demand within the forces. if i do go there, ill go into the air force.
i always wondered about a military career aswell. so i decided to try out the reserves first. maybe you should do the same. it gives you an idea whether a military career is for you or not, during your basic training. the reserves dont sign a contract either, and cant be forced to fight oversees (Afghanistan for instance).
as a student, a career in the reserves is pretty demanding. i used to be in the army reserves, and i had to go in at least 2 weekends a month (basically every other weekend) and every Tuesday night. i dunno about you, but for an engineering student like me, it did take a toll on my studies.
i quit the army reserves, and am joining the naval reserves now. apparently, they require you to go every tuesday night, but not as many weekends as the army.
Im going through my process right now, as we speak.
now, thats the army and the naval reserves. theres also the air reserves, but that doesnt take in as many people. its alot more limited, and alot of reg force air force guys go into it. I think they do take NCMs, but not many officers. among officers, avionics officers might be available to civilians as reserves, but to become a reserve air force pilot, the chances are close to nil.

as for benefits they can offer, theres alot.
this is for the reserves:
they pay for your eduction.
they give a guaranteed summer job (training) which pays better than alot of other student jobs.
it looks good on a resume.
you have a full time job if you want. you can simply switch from class A to B, which is full time.
when you are in full time, you get medical, dental etc:
oh, and you get paid for 7 daysof the week, rather than 5. even if you dont work sat and sunday.
for the reg force:
if you join in now, they might give you a bonus, but that comes with a contract.
if you go to A-stan, you get decent amount of money..but ofcourse its dangerous work.
you should really go to a recruiting center for the best information, and guidance to your career path.

I'm considering full time regular forces for a minimum term of 3 years. Right now I'm doing Specialist in Finance at UofT and I'm really interested in experiencing the military after I graduate in a year. I don't plan on spending the rest of my life in the military, I just don't want to go straight into finance after university, I want to do something I actually am interested in for a while, and a 3 year term seems good.
As soon as the summer comes, I'll go and visit the nearest recruiting station and have a little chat with them.
Whats the chances of getting sent to A-stan if you go full time? Of course, I'm not interested in dying, however I am willing to risk danger.
While your in the military full time, do they provide you with housing (living on the base I assume) and food or do you have to pay for those? How does leave work in the military? Do you get weekends off and all the holidays?

[Whats the chances of getting sent to A-stan if you go full time? Of course, I'm not interested in dying, however I am willing to risk danger.]
-Depends on which MOC you choose. If you chose a combat arms trade, there is a chance you will be sent to Afghanistan, but then that would depend on which unit you get posted with, and when they are scheduled to rotate into the sandbox. If you only plan on staying for a 3 year contract, your chances of deployment can be low.
[While your in the military full time, do they provide you with housing (living on the base I assume) and food or do you have to pay for those?]
-Reg force pay a small amount of money for their shacks and meal cards while training. After training, you can live one base paying rent (which is usually very low) or off base at your own expense.
[How does leave work in the military? Do you get weekends off and all the holidays?]
During training, don't count on getting weekends off. If your training falls on national holidays, you will get them off. During training, you will get a leave pass for the amount of time you will have off.
Once qualified, you are entitled to 2 weeks vacation a year, as well as national holidays.

"As soon as the summer comes, I'll go and visit the nearest recruiting station and have a little chat with them."
ya..that would be best. i have my medical the day after tomorrow at the recruiting center montreal.
"Whats the chances of getting sent to A-stan if you go full time? Of course, I'm not interested in dying, however I am willing to risk danger."
in three years, close to nil. I mean just getting trained would take 1 and a half o two years. then, pre-Afghanistan training takes 8 months minimum. if tis three years, i highly doubt you'd end up being there, unless the demand for troops surges alot.
"While your in the military full time, do they provide you with housing (living on the base I assume) and food or do you have to pay for those? How does leave work in the military? Do you get weekends off and all the holidays?"
im only a reservist (in transition right now). i have no clue about the housing. but i hear its cheap. really cheap. on your training you get free food and accommodation. when not training i guess you pay for it, like anywhere else.
accommodation also varies by officers, senior NCO and Junior Ranks.

Reservists do not pay for housing (if you want to call it that) or food while on course. We usually live in tents (during summer) or indoor parade squares (during winter) while on course.
Reg Force get the shacks, and have to pay for their meal cards while training.

good that u are thinking of joining up. As for any good info, go to local CFRC. If you apply for ROTP they will pay all of your school fees plus a salary.
One advice if you want a tour join combat arms if you don't then stay the fucck out of the infantry because you are going over for certain if u sign a 3 year contract. Also before going over the the reg force try the reserve to see if u like the army lifestyle or not. Many reg force recruits I know on my course VR (quit) cause the army isn't what they thought it would be. Save the Army and your self a lot of trouble by trying the reserves first.
Once you finish u training and is posted, you will be looking at a job with similar hours to civilan jobs. days usually start at 6 and end early around 2pm depending on your trade.

For joining Canadian Armed Force, you need to be its citizen ,and never committed any serious offence.
But, noooooooo, don¡¦t join any Army, you will regret.
If you are interested in firing guns, go to a range. If you want to wear the uniforms, go to an army supply store. If you want to risk in dangers, play Call of Duty 4.
If you want to be bossed around, then, be my guest, join Army.
Army is a place for jar heads. Either you were one, or they turn you into one.
Last scream from me ¡V Nooooooooooooo!

I'm taking a shot in the dark here, but I'm assuming you weren't top candidate?
Nah, nothing romantic, it was just the obligation for every 20-year-old joining the armed force for 2 years in Taiwan.
They were going to enroll me into the Marine Corp.. But I insisted I only wanted to be a regular infantry. After the boot camp, I even had chance to join the ROCN Seal Unit. But why would I do that?

I have nothing to apoligize for. You have done nothing but troll topics by people looking for information.
If you want to make a topic on your bad experience in the forces and how your instructors yelled at you and gave you orders, feel free to make a thread about it, and discuss it in there.
In the meantime, stop trying to derail valid posts with your anti-military garbage.
Thank you, and good day.

Damn right, we don't like those who loath their service in the military, especially when we are a 100% volunteer force. Those in the ranks applied to be there out of sense of duty and patriotism to their nation.... something you clearly know nothing about.
Take note Cowlan brother, Don't let one naysayer selfishly mis-guide you from your ambitions.

Also, if you have any questions about the CF, be sure to check out army.ca
Their message boards are full of soldiers who have been there, done that. They can answer any questions you may have, but be sure to search for questions as they have most likely been answered before.
Good luck dude.

Well, well, well. Besides euphemism on senses of duty and patriotism, why don¡¦t you just tell Cowlan on what you do in the armed force on daily basis? I¡¦m sure it¡¦s really thrilling, isn't it, rofl, isn't it?
I don't mean to insult the servicemen and women in any nation. But I only wanted to help the people make their choices. You were too sensative, uncontroled_substance.

Pathankot Strike
8 F-86Fs of No 19 Squadron led by Squadron Leader Sajjad Haider struck Pathankot airfield. With carefully positioned dives and selecting each individual aircraft in their protected pens for their strafing attacks, the strike elements completed a textbook operation against Pathankot. Wing Commander M G Tawab, flying one of the two Sabres as tied escorts overhead, counted 14 wrecks burning on the airfield. Among the aircraft destroyed on the ground were nearly all of the IAFs Soviet-supplied Mig-21s till then received, none of which were seen again during the War.
