Yes, it was a smart movie and it was obvious that the filmmakers did their homework. How all the threads were put together was actually quite ingenius. But there were two major flaws with the movie. One was the fact that Kutcher did not do a very good job acting in this film. He did not show much dynamic range and he was outstaged by his supporting cast, namely Amy Smart and Ethan Suplee. This movie was probably just a bad match for him and perhaps he will do a better job in his next dramatic role. Just like Tom Cruise was not suited for The Last Samurai, Kutcher was not suited for Butterfly Effect.
Another flaw with the movie was that its premise was not very original. We have seen this over and over and over again in many movies and television series. See It's a Wonderful Life for a better example of how the present is changed by dabbling in the past. In Butterfly Effect, nothing new was introduced and no truly original thoughts were brought to the table.
A poorly acted, adequately executed teen-derivative of the same old concept.
