Brooklyn, I guess the impact of Evan's predicaments were not as significant for me because I have seen that very concept utilized so many times before in the movies. I was expecting a new or different twist to the whole time-travel concept.
Regarding Evan's blackouts, they were a defect handed down from his father. You'll remember that when he visits his father in the mental hospital, his father tries to kill him because he knew that Evan had the same "curse" and didn't want him to have to suffer the consequences.
