It seemed to me that a traumatic event always caused the blackouts. One particular instance was when they put the dynamite in the maibox. That caused a blackout.
When he was an adult, he learned that all he had to do to go back into the past was to read about one of the traumatic events that he had written in his journal and it would trigger a blackout. He could pick one of the particular events in his journal and that is where in his life he would travel back to.
The passages in his journal were like time travel portals. When he wanted to go back to a certain time in his life, he would fetch that particular journal, read it and travel back to that point in his life.
That was my perception anyway.
