anyone stop to think that his blackouts were the result of his going back in time to change things? if you look at the scene where he visits his father at the institution, he's talking, then he blacks out and wakes to find his father strangling him.
later on in the movie he goes back to visiting his father and talks about going back in time to fix things and his father tries to strangle him.
the blackouts are like...markers...sort of like a post-it note you would put in a book to mark a certain page or certain paragraph.
