My take on the blackouts is that Evan, the child, has blackouts because Evan, the man, is the consciousness in charge during those times. He notices many of these blackouts as a child because they are traumatic.
BTW, child Evan and Tommy were _really_ creepy. Great actors but it kind of made me scared of child Evan when I probably wasnt meant to be.
