The film is the flick about how tiny details may have enormous and unpredictable impact on the future events.
Of course Kutcher's time travels were real (in the movie, that is :))
He traveled back, changed one single event, but still caused major alterations in the lives of several persons, including himself.
As to how he got his power to travel through time, well, that's irrelevant to the story.
