Ooh, Columbo-style, just one more thing...

I'm not sure if the blackouts were caused by his time travel. My reading of it was that they were pre-determined 'windows' into which he could travel if he chose to.

The best example of this is when he goes to collect the knife to destroy the blockbuster. In travelling back, he lost control and was unable to complete the task he had set himself, ie the window wasn't big enough to do what he wanted to do.


Also, the only thing that annoyed me about the film was when he went back to the kiddie-porn scene for the second time, and threatened the dad with the blockbuster. Surely by this stage he could have realised that things would have been better by slightly re-adjusting his original "leave Kayleigh alone, kick the brother's ass" speech, rather than completely changing his approach as he did do. For an intelligent guy, this seemed pretty dumb.
