My interpretation is that he purposefully went back to that point in his life because he remembered that his teacher had the spikes on her desk that he could hit with his hands, knowing that when he came back to current day he would have the marks of stigmata that would get the attention of his cellmate.
The cellmate did not know him as having the marks previously because he didn't have them before. He went back in time, made the marks and then returned.
