I would not be surprised if they use something like that as a pass over in a structure like the EU used the ECU to get to the EURO

AMERO
Building a North American Union from Canada, USA and Mexico was a central part of a 2005 meeting of these countries head of government. Following that meeting the The Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP) was built. (link: http://www.spp.gov/)
Several groups have active task forces to influence the process (for example: http://www.cfr.org/publication/8102/building_a_north_american_community.html)
See also a description from a different point of view at: http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=15017
Within that discussion the idea came up and was infused in the public discussion to establish a new currency, the Amero to bring together the USD, CAD and MXN. The main proponent in the beginning was Robert A. Pastor in 2001, who offered his view in a book:
Toward a North American Community: Lessons from the Old World for the New
Argued for in Canada by C.D. Howe Institute (http://www.cdhowe.org/pdf/harris.pdf), in the US by The Fraser Institute, (The Case for the Amero, 1999 http://oldfraser.lexi.net/publications/critical_issues/1999/amero/section_01.html; http://www.fraserinstitute.ca/admin/books/files/amero.pdf),
in the news somehow at: http://www.nsi-ins.ca/english/news_views/oped19.asp
There is even a youtube report: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hiPrsc9g98
Some even believe a planned recession would make it easier to go to the AMERO http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=53350
http://www.canadafreepress.com/2006/cover121406.htm
http://www.funnymoneyreport.com/article_view.php?id=18
There is a website which compiled most of the details: http://www.amerocurrency.com/
Now there seems to be nothing new here but keep in mind that the European Union used a longtime the ECU as a currency between member states before establishing a public new currency the EURO, so we are talking a long term process and just as here in the countries of North America, there was no real democratic legitimization till the countries were so used to the concept that there was no real resistance.

Dollar seems to be doing OK without including other dodgy currencies like Pesos in its composition.
