Internet marketing: 3 reasons not to believe everything you read

By: Internet Business Examiner Phyllis Zimbler Miller

Internet marketing advice can range from simple to complex how to set up a blog on blogger.com to how to do white hat search engine optimization techniques.

What amazes me is how many experts feel compelled to denigrate techniques that they dont understand.

Lets be honest no matter how much time you spend studying as much as possible about Internet marketing and Internet business, you cant know everything. The goal, in my opinion, is to know enough about the major topics that you realize when you need outside help.

In the last few days Ive been signing up at new sites that have caught my eye checking out these sites for you and for me. But, truthfully, until you get the hang of each site and spend some time on the site, its hard to make a reasonable judgment on the effectiveness of that site.
Thus I am continually amazed at the people who put down Twitter and other social media without adequately learning how to use these social media tools effectively.

Im reading the fully revised 4th edition of the classic bestseller MILLION DOLLAR CONSULTING by Alan Weiss. Heres a comment from this book:
Limit your time on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and whatever else is invented between the time I write this and you read it, because this is not where true buyers hang out or look for resources. As marketing tools, these are very low priority and often painfully stupid. (Albert is working late tonight. Now theres a piece of news that makes my time on the Internet worthwhile!)

Although I post business-related videos to YouTube and Im on Facebook, I cant say categorically that I think these are high priority marketing tools. I can say, based on my own experience, that Twitter can be very high priority as a marketing tool IF USED STRATEGICALLY. (Of which, by the way, tweeting that your husband is working late tonight is NOT an example.)
Thus, without further ado, here are my top 3 reasons for not believing everything you read about Internet marketing:

1. No one can know everything.
2. Every person has his or her own agenda or his or her own blind spot.
3. We all believe that what were doing is right and what others are doing is wrong.

I urge you to find out for yourself if social media sites such as Twitter are effective marketing tools for your own brand, book or business.

And if youre not sure you know how to use Twitter effectively, join my monthly program www.WeTeachWebMarketing.com the September topic will be using Twitter effectively to promote your brand, book or business. Or, if you want to get started right now, see www.TeachMetoTweetNow.com .
