In our class disscussion, someone said that non-Americans view America as having no culture. Well what about the whole baseball, apple pie, fat, cheesburger, lazy sterotype? Is that our culture? My french teacher in high-school said french people view this type of thing as our culture. How can an outsider judge the level of "culture" another country has? Now, about sterotypes: they are often funny because they are sprung from truth! America does over eat, and gets too wrapped up in sports and commercialism. I personally don't think that could define "our culture". But I ask you, what is American culture? I know I can't identify with the entire country. If I were to define my American culture, it would be very localized. You know we are not like west coast folk. We're just one big melting pot.
Culture is a very sensitive thing to talk about. People define culture in a lot of different ways. I believe that Culture is about appreciating other people's ways of living and interacting with the environment.
It's like those who term themselves as "having a culture" are either abusing or overusing it.
What do you think is the cause of all these wars today?
In Africa, it is usually the clash of cultures within tribes that result in tribal and civil wars - The war in Iraq, the mideast in general is no exception.
One culture usual think that his is the best and looks down upon the other.
The different ways we can define culture can make people say that their culture is better than others or that other groups has no culture.
Just to make you feel better, my tribe is always blamed for not having a culture because it originated from another tribe and not by itself.
CULTURE is the habit of being pleased with the best and knowing why. (Henry Van Dyke)
I think of my culture consists of things such as the house I live in, the way I eat my food (fork, knife, spoon), the clothes I wear, my cell phone, my language, my values and everything I believe in, and the things that I do everyday, all of which I see as cultural products, which define culture. I also feel that ones culture is a result of the environment in which one lives. Each environment has different opportunties and challenges, the way a person or group of people adapt to that environment creates culture. The size of the united States allows for a range of environments and therefore a range of cultures. there are many different cultures present in the United States, each bringing with it some of the original cultural products and adapting new cultural products from their new environment. I think you have to look at one culture at a time because each is different and fulfills the needs of the people who ascribe to that culture. So I couldnt say that a group of people have more or less culture, everyone has the culture they need to survive.
