I know I've already posted my measure in, but I think I'll start using this format for keeping track of monthly business .

Recipes I've been wanting to try...

February 2 2004, 1:23 PM

Many people go on about how wonderful mayonnaise is for the hair, but I didn't know which kind would be best to use... so I found a mayonnaise recipe for it and I can just omit the salt (don't think salt would be all that good for the hair!). I can see from the ingredients, though, how mayonnaise would be beneficial...

I've also heard how good yogurt is just by itself as a plain conditioner. I've tried it once before about a year and a half ago, mixed with egg, and it really stopped my hairloss, but I've never tried it alone. So that one is on my list of things to try.

And lastly I'd like to try coconut milk. I've heard this really softens the hair up .

Residue...

February 3 2004, 6:08 PM

Residue for me has lately included:
- greasy, over-conditioned feel to hair
- dry ends

Over my winter break in December, I was deep conditioning almost every time I washed my hair, because I would just leave in the concoction all day and then rinse it out when I had time. My hair greatly benefitted from that and it didn't seem to over-moisturize my hair, even though I didn't do any clarifying rinses. Well, last month I decided to try Martine's method of not completely rinsing the last conditioner out of the hair... it worked well for my weakest conditioner, Lush's American Cream, but gave me LOTS of moisture residue when I tried it with my very heavy Caring conditioner. ACV rinses have never worked for me, so instead I used this recipe for adding shine, which worked really well in clearing the moisture residue.

Last Friday, I had a lot of time off so I did a VERY long deep conditioning, and even though I rinsed really well, I still had some moisture residue left over. The next wash I oiled my hair and there was still moisture residue, and so I just CWC-ed without any deep conditioning or oil. I didn't even use a leave-in. Yet the residue is still there... so I thought I might try a baking soda rinse. I think it's just clarifying my hair needs from conditioning SO much, and I think baking soda leaves the hair shiny too .

Trim day

February 4 2004, 6:34 PM

I was in need of a little trim, so today was the second time I have trimmed my hair by myself. I decided to trim today because it is the MM red letter day for trimming for length, and trimming on that day can't hurt, even if it doesn't do any good . However, this was the first time I trimmed my hair dry. I did a dry measurement and got 28.6" (my hair is more than an inch shorter when dry!) and after the trim it was 28.5". So I only trimmed off 0.1" just like my last trim... and I'm so glad I'm a wavy, because I don't think I did a very good job but you can't tell because of the waves! Also, I've gotten rid of my dry ends. For my next wash I'll be using baking soda and maybe that will help me get rid of my moisture residue - which means both my problems will be solved! Yay!

Love,

Tried the baking soda rinse...

February 6 2004, 2:31 PM

Yesterday at 5 PM I oiled my hair with olive oil and left it in all night. The scalp was quite heavily oiled and I used very little on the length. It was in for about 14 and a half hours! I shampooed and conditioned all of my hair (using Timotei and Caring) and then tried the baking soda rinse. I had used 1/2 tablespoon baking soda and 2 cups distilled water.

It worked really well! My hair felt kind of odd while the baking soda was in it... super slippery, but with a jelly like texture! I rinsed it out and my hair is quite shiny today (as shiny as a wavy girl could ever be!) and there is no moisture residue.

As my hair gets longer, I'm finding it harder and harder to experiment with it. Dunking my hair in the baking soda wasn't easy at all, and deep conditioning has become quite time consuming as well. I think it's probably easier if I leave treatments in overnight (which is what I used to do when my hair was longer!) because it takes a lot less time .

Overall, the baking soda rinse was a success, and I think if I do it again I probably have to dilute the baking soda a bit less! The water was almost clear after I had diluted it!

Mayonnaise

February 9 2004, 8:49 PM

I tried using mayonnaise in my hair today. I left it in for 45 minutes, then rinsed thoroughly, then shampooed and conditioned. It hasn't done anything special for my hair at all! When I leave my conditioner on for 2 minutes it does a better job than this! It could just be the mayo that I used, though. Anyway, I'm glad it didn't work too well... it's getting really hard to do treatments on my hair! Especially mayo because it's really thick and creamy, plus too much of that strong smell is a bit disgusting, LOL!

Anyway, I'm glad that now I know that it doesn't work for my hair, so I can be sure not to use it again in the future!

Love,

Very soft hair!!

February 10 2004, 9:13 PM

I haven't had hair this soft for ages! Last night, I put my hair in a loose, slightly damp braid. This morning it was still soft (and saturated with leave-in because the mayo didn't work very well) and I put it in a quick bun for school. It was in the bun for about 12 hours! And when I took it down I let my hair air dry (it dried in about 15 minutes) and it was amazingly soft! Yay!

Oh - and I'm pretty sure I'm at waist length now! I took some pics today and will post them when I can!

Overnight treatment

February 13 2004, 8:52 AM

Last night I mixed together 1 tablespoon honey, 2 tablespoons conditioner, and 1 tiny egg. I was planning on adding coffee but I forgot until I was actually putting the goop in my hair .

Anyway, I put the stuff on my length at around 9:40 PM last night and decided to leave it on all night. Before bedtime I did a really nice face mask too . Then I washed it out at 7:15 this morning, so it was in for 9 hours and 25 minutes. First I rinsed it all out, then CWC with Caring and Timotei. My hair felt great! Then I let it air dry a bit and put some leave-in on my ends. Right now I've wrapped it in sponge rollers (Spoodles!) and I'm planning to leave it like this for quite a while. I want my hair to be super curly for tonight!

Kirsten had sent me 2 packets of Spoodles, but LOL it wasn't enough for my hair! You are supposed to join two of them together for long hair, but I couldn't do that otherwise I wouldn't have enough. So I had to leave a few inches up on the top, which is okay because I didn't want the top to be curly anyway. There were two sections on either side in the back that I didn't have enough curlers left for, so I put them in two damp braids. I'll see how their curliness will compare to that of the hair put in the curlers .

Swimming

February 25 2004, 6:42 AM

Yesterday I had swimming for the first time, and I forgot my swim cap! But no worries - I had saturated my hair in conditioner and bunned before I swam, so my hair was fully protected and also very soft when I rinsed after swimming.

Remembered my swim cap this time...

February 27 2004, 8:54 AM

Yesterday I had swimming third period, and we don't have much time to change, so I thought I'd just wet my hair and apply conditioner while at home in the morning. So I did just that, and hardly anyone noticed! In choir practise, a good friend of mine noticed and asked me what the HECK was in my hair, LOL! And she thought I was crazy to go around with it for 3 hours before swimming!

Unfortunately it didn't turn out as I had planned! My swim cap fell off twice because it was so slippery, and one of the times it was while we were doing a 12 minute continuous swim! Since I couldn't stop, I had to switch to backstroke and braid my hair to the side so it would stop flowing all over the place! It wasn't too bad, though... I think the conditioner must have penetrated my hair because it was nice and soft after rinsing.

I'm leaving for my class trip soon! Busy getting everything prepared... it's a 5 day trip so I will probably have to wash my hair once there. I'm going to take trichomania shampoo (maybe I'll just do a scalp wash rather than washing everything and letting it dry for 3 hours?) and Caring conditioner (just in case) and definitely my leave-in (need to make a new batch today). The accessories I will take will probably be my comb, some mini claws, a scrunchie, and a couple of hairsticks. I probably won't be leaving it down much because it will be dirty walking through the mangrove forest, but if I do leave it down to dry it will be when we go on a long boat trip...

Love,
~*Leia*~

Another herbal wash

February 28 2004, 8:16 AM

Last night I tried JUST bhringraj, not mixed with anything. I used about a cup of it mixed with some boiling water and left it in all night again. It wasn't difficult to wash out of the length, but it was hard trying to get it out of the scalp! I ended up having to use a little bit of shampoo. But my hair feels great!

Maybe I should write some herbal recipes...

February 28 2004, 11:49 AM

I think it would be useful to anyone who is interested in using Indian herbs, and it will be recipes that have been used with success. The bhringraj was so nice... I think it made my hair slightly darker too. Of course it will have to be used repeatedly to get an overall darker shade, but I love doing herbal washes so I don't mind . Also, it keeps my hair clean for longer; in the past two weeks I've only washed my hair twice. The only problem is I have SO many products and now have nothing to do with them if I go completely herbal, LOL! But I don't mind switching back and forth. It's nice to have change sometimes .

I'm almost done packing for the Sundarbans. I think it's going to be so much fun! I can't wait till I go! I am probably going to have Loom withdrawal syndrome though, LOL! What am I going to do without my Loom fix for the day?

Anyway, I've got to go and find some batteries... oh and I can't forget my digicam!

Love,
