30.4"

February 28 2004, 8:16 AM

Yay! Finally past the magic 30"! I know I measured a bit early, but it would be weird measuring my hair while I'm on a boat in front of all my friends ! I reached my goal for March, and am now up 0.6" since my last measure-in.

I've always thought "My hair will be REALLY long when it reaches 30"... and now that it's there, it doesn't even feel long! I suppose it looks long to others, though... yay I'm so happy about reaching my first goal of waist length!

Love,

Goals for this month...

March 7 2004, 6:39 AM

- Right now I'm at one of my major length goals, and I'd like to enjoy it more at this length rather than constantly thinking of making it grow longer. So, in order to do that, I'd like to style my hair in other ways than a bun at least twice a week.
- I recently cut down my washing to once a week, which suits MY schedule fine, but my hair doesn't really like it; my roots get oily and my length gets sort of dry. So I'd like to try to wash more often and do more herbal washes.
- I'm not all that concerned about my growth rate this month, so I'm going to concentrate on keeping my hair and scalp healthy; I have to swim (in P.E.) 4-5 more times, so I have to make sure I take good care of my hair while I swim. Also, I haven't been good about oiling my hair (haven't done it since January 30th! Uh oh) so I will have to start doing that, although I'm not sure how to mix herbal washes and oiling. I'll have to look into that.
- Basically my overall goal is to RELAX, not let stress get to me, have a great time in Oman (get the solo!), and stay healthy!

Love,
~*Leia*~

Sundarbans hair stuff!

March 5 2004, 9:20 AM

On the first day there, my friends and I let our hair down on the boat so that we could take some flowing hair pictures ! Here they are!

Me:

It looks a LOT shorter in these photos. Here is Isabelle, with BSL gorgeous curls:

Hae Jung (1aMii dyed hair, between shoulder and BSL):

Karen (1cMii, between shoulder and BSL)

Esther (1cFi+, between shoulder and BSL, chemically straightened and dyed):

Lennard (shoulder length, curly, dyed black from natural blonde); he is 10th grade's only guy longhair!:

No more flowing hair pictures, but look how TAN I got!! My legs are my natural color, and look at how dark my arms became!

And this is me on the boat:

More hair stuff...

March 5 2004, 10:27 AM

I kept my hair in a bun for most of the day with either a ficcare or mini claws. My bangs got really tangled in the wind, though, and were a pain to comb out every evening! I would wear a french braid to bed (it keeps my bangs in) and use leave-in every night. I didn't wash my hair at all there because the showers were really icky and I didn't want my hair to get in that!

Also, my friend Isabelle was saying how my hair got a LOT lighter. It does make sense though... my skin goes a very nice goldeny-brown in the sun (though you can't see that in the picture) and my hair tends to go light brown or red. The ends sometimes looked completely red to her, and when I look at them I can tell they are noticeably lighter. I think I will have to do a coffee deep conditioning today and next time I wash I am going to do so with my darkening herbs!

I just wrote about my trip to the Sundarbans (though it was kinda brief) at: Leia's Adventures

Anyway, I've got to go and get ready for piano class, but will have to come and catch up some more on the Loom later!

Love,

Deep conditioning today!

March 5 2004, 4:22 PM

I haven't used conditioner since February 13th! I washed my hair only twice since then, and both times it was with herbs, so I didn't use any conditioner at all. I felt like doing a deep conditioning today so I wet my hair and applied John Frieda Miraculous Recovery... I finished the tub today (after only 4 applications!). I don't mind that it only lasted a few applications though because I got it in November, so it really has lasted ages.

When I put the conditioner on, I twisted it up on the top of my head with two ficcares and it looked kinda cool, so I took a pic .

I left the conditioner on for 4 hours. Then I shampooed my scalp and rinsed it all out together. My hair feels SO much softer when I use herbs rather than conditioner, plus it smells a lot nicer... I don't really mind right now though because at least my hair is nice and CLEAN!

Not a very good hair day :(

March 9 2004, 5:38 PM

Lately I haven't been feeling great about my hair (ever since I got back from the Sundarbans I think). It felt dry, so I did that John Frieda deep conditioning, but it just didn't work very well which is surprising. So yesterday I got my hair wet and applied Caring conditioner and left it in (a no-fail conditioner for me) and it has dramatically improved my hair already. It's just that it doesn't feel soft ENOUGH, and some parts are really dry. It also just doesn't look good down; it looks unkempt and uncared for . I don't know what to do... I know I desperately need to do an oiling and a herbal wash but I just don't have TIME to do it!! And I don't know how much it'll help anyway. I'm very happy about my length and my texture and everything, it's just that it doesn't look or feel good... sigh...

Love,

Spirit Week...

March 10 2004, 6:41 AM

We had Spirit Week this week and these are the boring things I did with my hair :

Pajama Day - silky pajamas and a bun
Inside-Out day - A bun again I think
Cross-Dress day - LOL I wore a skirt (whoops!) and a french braid, was feeling very feminine for once
Twin Day - jeans, black sleeveless top, and hair down with two mini claws in the front
Crazy Hat/Hair Day - Nothing crazy to do with my hair, so I guess I'll just wear a crazy hat

Herbal wash today... and some swimming ideas...

March 12 2004, 5:42 PM

I asked on the Loom about ideas for swimming, and Grace said:
"Because I don't want ANY chlorine to get to my hair (I swim daily) I use the double swim cap method. It really keeps water out. I don't oil or condition my hair for swimming because it stays completely dry. My way certainly isn't glamourous though!!

1) first cap: Use to make a swim band. Cut off top of cap and put it on as a head band at hairline. I use a cheapy latex (?) stretch swim cap for the band.

2) second cap: slide 2nd cap over the top of the swim band. I use a medium cost cap with a chin strap, not a super stretchy type of cap. You can use baby powder in the cap to help it glide over the band.

It won't work if you put your hair in a bun, btw. After you put the swim band on, then wrap your hair around the top of your head, trying to distribute it equally rather than making a bump on top like a bun."

I don't know how will this will work for me, because my scalp is usually dry and it is my length that gets soaked with water. I think I'll just put on 2-3 swim caps and hope nothing gets in !

Also, today I did another herbal wash . I tried something new - I oiled my hair (hadn't done that in so long!) and scalp and left it on for an hour. Then I made a herbal paste out of bhringraj, neem, shikakai, aritha, amla, and chandan, and used that in my hair. I was hoping it would work effectively in removing the oil and condition my hair as well. I left it in for an hour before rinsing.

It has been drying for about an hour and a half now, and the length is great - it feels really conditioned and soft and there is absolutely NO oil residue (and I used quite a bit!). I am waiting for my scalp to dry - that will be the real test. I wasn't able to massage the paste into my scalp very well, so my scalp might still be oily, but I will just have to wait and see.

I think I need to do another Lush henna treatment... my length and ends are really light now. It's light brown with thin red streaks peeking through, which just doesn't look nice with my hair. Maybe I'll do it around the beginning of April while I'm on Spring Break...

Love,
~*Leia*~

My routine (as of now)

March 16 2004, 5:25 PM

Washing:
I wash usually once a week, mostly for convenience. Usually when I do wash, I leave something in my hair for an extended period of time, be it oil, product, or herbs.

Products:
Recently I have been using less and less products. When I want to scalpwash, I will use one of my Lush solid shampoos (Trichomania, Karma Komba, Stimulating Spice, or Dr. Peppermint) or my Timotei "Refreshing Cucumber" shampoo. I have used "Caring" conditioner for more than 2 years now; it is a product that never fails to condition and perfectly detangle my hair. It is good for deep conditioning or normal conditioning. Though I don't use it much anymore, it is one of my favorite conditioners. Unfortunately, it is not available anywhere but Bangkok.

Herbs:
I use Indian herbs to cleanse and condition my hair. Most of the time I will make a paste out of the herbs of my choice and leave it on my hair for at least 30 minutes. Read more about that here: http://www.network54.com/Forum/message?forumid=278542&messageid=1079093499

Detangling:
I use a wide-toothed comb for detangling and styling purposes. I found that using brushes only hurt my hair. Occasionally I will use an MP BBB to brush my scalp.

Leave-in:
I use Fox's Shea Butter Conditioning Cream. You can find the recipe here: http://www.network54.com/Hide/Forum/message?forumid=235232&messageid=1058257069
I do not use the exact same ingredients, however. I use a mixture of 10% shea butter, Caring conditioner, and olive oil.

Oiling:
I find oiling my hair is one of the most beneficial things I can do. I use olive oil and massage it into my scalp first, then squeeze it onto my length. I prefer washing it out with herbs, but I have in the past used CWC and S+C methods to remove the oil.

Trimming:
I trim as often as needed according to the Morrocco Method trim dates, found here. http://morroccomethod.com/lunar.html
I use Feye's method for trimming your own hair: http://members.fortunecity.com/feye/trim/index.html

Styling:
I will usually style my hair in a bun every day (sometimes with variations such as the figure 8) with various accessories. I do this because it is the quickest and easiest style that I can do in the mornings, lasts all day, and keeps my hair out of my face. For special occasions, I do more dressy updos and will leave my hair down if it's slightly less formal. I love styling my hair in curls which I do using sponge rollers.

At my last measure in, I was at 30.4", and more than two weeks have now passed. According to my normal growth rate (which averages 0.6-1.0" per month), my hair should be at around 30.7" now, but I am not quite sure. I am adding this information in here so that those reading this can have an idea of how long my hair was when I had this routine.

Love,
~*Leia*~

Some final thoughts before leaving...

March 17 2004, 2:28 AM

4:55 PM
I'm leaving in about 12 hours for Oman for the Festival of Choirs!

Today I bunned my hair 4 times, LOL! That's 3 more times than normal . I used hairsticks today, and my first bun was too tight, so I loosened it before leaving for school. Then, on the way down the stairs, I noticed the shadow of some stray strands sticking out, which really looked odd! So when I got in the car, I fixed my bun again. It was okay for about three hours... then my friend Ik Jun was playing with a basketball as we headed down the stairs, and it crashed into the back of my bun (not very hard, though - just enough to make my bun all messy)! My first thought was "I hope my hairsticks aren't broken!" Luckily, they were okay . I redid my bun for the last time, but this time it wasn't a cinnamon bun like I usually do. It's more like a knotty bun; when I hold my hair like a ponytail to make a bun, the knotty bun sort of just "happens." It's very evenly spread and sometimes holds the hair by itself. It's the first bun on the top left of my updo collage (and it's unsecured in the picture). Now that my hair is long enough to do it, I think I'll put up pictures with instructions if I have time.

Love,
~*Leia*~

Back from Oman - equipped with pics!

March 22 2004, 6:33 PM

As my pics are uploading, I thought I'd write a bit about my trip.

We were only there for two days, but had a wonderful time nonetheless. The day before the Festival began, we had 4 hours of shopping to do in the malls! Needless to say I got a lot of hair toys (pics are below) and I bought some hair goop from Body Shop as well. I think it was from the Africa Spa line... it was called Hair and Body Honey Mud. It sounded interesting (mmmm.. honey!) so I bought it, and they gave me a free gift with it - Palmshine Conditioner. Right now the honey mud is in my hair, so I'll have results to post about it later when I wash it out. It's been a while since I've tried something new.

Anyway, the first day of the Festival the tryouts for the solo was held in the morning. I had never tried out for a solo before and was extremely nervous. I didn't get it, but I feel good that I was picked in the last 3. Also, the director said I had the nicest voice, and the reason he didn't pick me was because my Spanish accent wasn't as good as the girl he chose (not my fault - I take French! ). I'm happy that she got it, though, because I could tell she worked really hard on it.

That first day, after rehearsing all day long, we went to the beach for dinner and then came back and rehearsed again. After that, we had a dance at the school and then went home. It was very exhausting! The next day was spent in practise all day long and then a final concert at night. It was a very short, exciting, and exhausting trip! I'm glad to be home, though .

Unluckily for me, I forgot my make up bag, so I look really awful in the picture I'm about to post (I had to use someone else's make up) . Also, more essentially, my SBCC was in my make up bag, so I wasn't able to use any leave-in for 3 days! My hair was bunned the whole time, but was still a bit dry when I got back. So I'm hoping this mud really works and restores back the much-needed moisture!

Also, yesterday I got back from school and had a package - it was my Princess Leia hairsticks from Fox! I haven't got a picture of them in my hair yet, but I do have the pictures Fox sent me of them before they arrived. They are so much more beautiful in real life! Here are the pictures:

And a close up:

Here is a pair of hairsticks I bought at Claire's while I was there:

And a really pretty shiny pink pair (sorry I know they are bad pictures):

A cloth headband:

A cloth headband with holes in it:

And lastly, me (looking awful!) and Esther after the concert:

Whew!

Love,
~*Leia*~

In need of a trim...

March 23 2004, 9:15 PM

My ends are getting a wee bit dry, and would greatly benefit from a micro-trim. Lucky for me, the red letter date for trimming according to the MM calendar is next Monday! That's also the day for trimming for thickness, which I am desperately in need of after all the shedding I've been going through lately.

Plans for the rest of the month...

March 25 2004, 8:12 PM

I've been so busy lately that I haven't been able to take a breath! SO much homework!! I can't wait till Spring Break begins next week - I will still have loads of homework, but I won't have strict deadlines, and will be able to work (and relax!) in my own time frame.

I think my hair is benefitting from the variety between herbal washes and using products. The only thing that products do better, in my opinion, is the fact that they are easy to spread. It is really easy to shampoo the scalp, but it's quite difficult to massage a thick, creamy mixture onto the scalp in order to cleanse it. Because of that, my scalp doesn't get cleansed properly when I do herbal washes, so I go back to shampooing the scalp sometimes. Right now it's mainly herbal washes, but once or twice a month I will use shampoo and conditioner. Tonight I am going to deep condition and will shampoo my scalp tomorrow.

On Monday, March 29th (Mum's birthday!), I am going to trim, as it is the Spring Equinox and the most optimal date in the year for trimming. I only need to take a bit off the ends. I'm going to do a dry trim and measurement that day since it isn't wash day, and on Wednesday after washing I'll do my monthly wet measure-in. Before I measure in, I'm going to be doing a herbal wash... I have to figure out a method to make it easier for the herbs to cleanse the scalp. I think if I separated some of the paste and made it thinner it might be easier to use. I'll have to try it and see!

Love,
~*Leia*~

Buying spree! :)

March 26 2004, 8:56 AM

Shopping on the internet is so easy and fun. I love that Mum gave me $100 to spend on whatever I want and get it sent to Canada because she is going next month. So far, I've bought:

- From www.natureswildchild.com
2 oz shea butter
8 oz jojoba oil
$24.05 including shipping

- From www.puritans.com
Green Source vitamins (60 tablets I think, but it said something like buy 1 get 2 free)
$28.02 including shipping

- Cancelled this order because of the shipping price:
From www.vitaminlife.com
Cedarwood essential oil
Lavendar essential oil
Rosemary essential oil
$16.39
$19.46 shipping!!

So altogether I am getting vits, shea butter, and jojoba oil, for $52.07. And Mum will by me EO's when she goes there because both of us think the shipping price is just ridiculous.

The Africa Spa thing turned out well... it left my hair soft the day afterward but not the day I used it. I think it might be better for body.

Everyone had been raving about...

March 30 2004, 6:42 AM

The SheaMoisture Shea Butter Leave-In conditioner, which is really cheap (only $10!) so I ordered some .

SheaMoisture Shea Butter Leave-In conditioner
$14.95 (including shipping)

New total: $88.87
Which allows only $11.13 to be left for spending. I probably won't spend that but at least I know it's there if there is something cheap I want to buy .

Just another pic...

I was sick all day yesterday so I had my hair in a tight french braid to keep it out of my face. I braided it while it was still slightly damp and I have really nice braid waves! Here's a pic (my finger is where my waist is at) :

Trim day!

March 29 2004, 7:16 PM

I love trim day. It seems to always fall on the day when my hair feels the dryest and is really in need of a trim. Plus, I'm really starting to get the hang of trimming evenly. My ends look really blunt (and thick! ) right now. Plus, when I did my dry measurements, I had no length missing, though I felt as though I trimmed off about .2"! Oh well... we'll see on measure-in day!

Last time I used the MM calendar, it really worked. In October-December I was getting really bad growth, and I trimmed on December 19th for length. On my measure-in day on January 1, I saw that I grew 0.5" since my December measure-in. The next month I got 1.1"! And then I trimmed again in February, and got 0.6" (which I think is quite good!). Both of those lengthening trims helped me reach my first length goal as quickly as possible... now I want hair that is beautiful as well as long. It has been thinning lately, so hopefully trimming today for thickness will work. I can only dream that my hair was as thick and gorgeous as Starfilly's hair...

Oh yeah, next month I want to measure my ponytail to see if it really has gotten thicker. I don't know when it was, but about a week ago I measured it and got 3.9". I'd like to see how it fluctuates throughout the year!

I also calculated today that if my hair grows 1/2" every month (including this month), I should be at 33" in September. That is tailbone for me (well, theoretically, because 33" of wet hair equals about 32" of dry hair for me!). That is my next length goal! And maybe in a year from today I will be at my final length goal... hmm, I wonder what I will want to do with my hair then?

Love,

Excited about April!

March 30 2004, 8:00 PM

Today was the last day of school and I have a very eventful Spring Break ahead of me! Lots of piano to play, lots of work to catch up on, exercising to do!

Ooh I get to measure my hair tomorrow!

And then there are my April projects...

- Total amount of hair on TLHL project, which I will start with the April measure-in

- Style threads! Betty gave me the idea to just do one style per month, and then have special "holiday" styles - isn't that a great idea? We will have to vote on the first style for April.

- Adding to the newbie thread which I started a few days ago

Ooh April is going to be exciting!

Tonight I am going to oil my hair and then wash it out with herbs tomorrow morning...

Love,

Number of washes this month

April 2 2004, 9:58 AM

Since June, I have been writing down every wash in my little offline hair journal. I write exactly what I do with results and everything. At the end of the month, I put a little chart in with how many washes I've had all month. I think I'll start putting that on this page too . So, for March, it was:

Length and scalp washes: 7
Scalp only washes: 0
Length only washes: 1 (this is from swimming)

The most I've washed my hair since June was 10 times a month (in August and December) and least is 6 times (in February). It's really easy for me to go long between washes because even if my scalp gets oily, my hair is bunned anyway. My length also gets dry between washes - maybe that's why I run out of my leave-in so quickly on those months that I don't wash frequently!
