Bad hair experiment!

September 17 2007, 1:59 PM

I came back from a 2-week vacation in India and decided to give my hair a treat, since it had been facing lots of heat, sunshine, and pollution. So, I mixed up a hair concoction, consisting of shea butter, olive oil, honey, and a dash of cinnamon.

Big mistake! I should have remembered the reason why I gave up conditioner and shea butter in my hair. My hair gets overconditioned very easily - the best conditioner for me is a light coating of oil.

Anyway. I left it in overnight, and the next morning (after 3-4 shampoos), my hair never dried. It was a mess of icky, sticky, yuckiness. I decided I would wait it out till the next wash, hoping that the shea butter would at least moisturize my hair in the meantime. I kept it in braids and buns for 2 days, then couldn't take it any longer and washed a day early!

For this wash, I got out all my Indian herbs, applied them on my hair, and even sat under a heat cap for an hour. I left these in overnight as well. These herbs get even the heaviest oil out, and I was sure they would work!

But they didn't (and I shampooed another 2-3 times this time). They got out most of the gunk from the top half of my hair, but the bottom half was still a tangly, sticky mess. I couldn't wait till the next wash day to get rid of it all! So, this morning, remembering something I had read from Heidi W.'s post some time ago, I mixed some baking soda with shampoo and used that on the bottom half of my hair. My hair is still wet, but it feels SO much lighter, and I could see all the goop being washed out in the drain with the baking soda mixture.

So, I (re)learned that shea butter works better on my dry skin rather than in my hair (I also probably used too much, and my hair didn't NEED all that conditioning, which is why it didn't get absorbed). Poor hair - I tried to give it a treat and ended up having a bad hair week! Anyway, baking soda did the trick, and hopefully my hair will be clean and nice from now on!

Plopping

September 24 2007, 4:49 AM

It is way past my bedtime, and I am not being able to sleep. I'm wondering if it is because of my hair (haha).

I wanted curls, so I decided to try plopping. It has never been successful for me, and I think I have figured out why. I always try to do it while I am sleeping, because the towel won't stay on my head unless I am lying down. But it is so uncomfortable. Maybe this is why I can't sleep?

I love my natural 2b waves, but it seems that after being combed through, they disappear into longer, looser waves. I wish they wouldn't! It makes my hair look so lifeless. Especially in London - the air is not as humid as I am used to in Dhaka, and my hair looks flat and almost (gasp) 2a. I remember someone calling it "straight" last semester. Ahh! I do NOT have straight hair.

Anyway, I supose that rather than obsessing over my hair (which I rarely do, these days) I should be trying to get some rest. I have a busy week coming up - my second year of university in a few days. I am excited, but also slightly nervous... and hoping for better grades this year as well as successful piano studies.

This is the beginning of a very exciting month for me. In just a couple of weeks I will be back in London, preparing to leave my old school life behind and start university. When I was going to Australia I was mainly scared, but now that I am going to a familiar place with lots of family around I am more excited than scared. I hope that I have made the right decison and chosen the right university and the right course (okay... since WHEN have I wanted to do International Relations and French? It's so hard to choose a course when you have so many interests!)

Also, this summer I have been eating very badly and have put on 2 more kgs. I put on 2 kgs in April on Spring Break so I am currently 4 kgs over the weight that I like to be - 50 kgs. I don't currently LOOK overweight at all, and it only just slightly shows , but I want to take care of it before it gets to a point where I can't handle it. I am changing my diet back to what it used to be - healthy food at all times, junk food only once a week, fewer carbs at dinner, and lots of fruit and vegetables. Instead of having chips for snacks I'll have fruit, bean sprouts, honey on brown toast, oat muffins, or other healthier options instead. And in addition to my morning yoga session, I am adding a sweaty disgusting workout in the afternoon, but ONLY until I lose the 4 kgs. Boy how I hate doing sweaty workouts (haha). It's only very few exercises - squats, treadmill, stationary bike, abs, and steps - but it's a lot for me because I am used to doing gentle yoga.

Love,
~*Leia*~

42"

August 27 2006, 11:30 AM

It's funny that my hair is 42" this month, because it was also the same length this January. I guess I have been trimming a lot. But I do see a difference. Look at the comparison pictures between that 42" and the current 42".

It looks a bit shorter in the second pic, but much healthier I think, with a much neater hemline as well. I'm very happy with my current length. Maybe 42" is a good length for me to maintain .

Having a good hair day! And current projects...

September 3 2006, 8:44 PM

I was a bit down earlier, but now I am feeling much better - I am listening to a Dave Brubeck CD my cousin gave me for my birthday (he plays jazz piano - this particular cousin is trying to get me to play more jazz ) and I just realized that my hair turned out great from my treatment last night.

Actually, it was a very normal treatment, it's just that I haven't done one for a while and my hair really needed it. I massaged my scalp with Everyday Mehndi Lavender Hair Growth Oil and I put bhringraj oil on my length. I let it sit for a couple of hours with my hair in a bun while I sat with my mum, worked on my current cross stitch project, and watched tv. Then I went and mixed up my 5-herb pack: a tablespoon each of sandalwood (my new batch smells sooooo sweet and wonderful), shikakai, amla, aritha, and bhringraj powders. I applied this on my length, bunned, put on a shower cap, lay a small towel by my pillow, and slept. Oh, I forgot to mention that some of the Lush Fever massage bar melted in my hands and I put that on my ends.

***Side note: while I was in London last month I bought their honey and white chocolate massage bar, I will have to look up the name, but it smells DIVINE!***

Yes, as I was saying, before I applied the herbs, I put some of the melted massage bar on my ends. Usually it is overly conditioning for me and I used quite a lot (about a tablespoon) but the herbs really helped get most of it out. Anyway, this morning, I readjusted my bun to a comfier position and did my morning workout (10 minutes of yoga and 20 minutes on the treadmill). Then I rinsed out most of the herbs upside down with the handheld showerhead before getting into the shower and shampooing right-side up. I think I used my Pure Roots Shikakai Shampoo. I used it mostly on the scalp, but also put some on the ends to make sure there would be very little residue of the massage bar.

I had to go out today to some curtain shops - Mum and I were buying some for my brother's room in London (they're less than half the price here!) - and it was a REALLY hot day, so I ended up putting my hair up. Just now I took it down and it was completely dry, and I combed it out. Usually I know how my hair has turned out from a wash when I comb it out. Well, it is soft, smells amaaaaazing from the herbs, and the ends are REALLY soft and only slightly overconditioned from the Fever. All in all, a good hair day.

I thought I'd write down a bit of non-related stuff - my current projects.
- The cross stitch I mentioned earlier: it's a bunch of flowers in a vase (I will try to remember to post a pic when it's done) and I am on the 7th out of 8 sections. Not long to go before I finish it!
- My second puzzle since coming back to Dhaka. The first one was a murder mystery that we finished in less than a week, and now we are working on a 3D one of Venice that will take considerably longer because it's 1580 pieces! You can see it here: http://wrebbit.com/puzz3d/index.htm
- I'm reading Lord of the Flies (it was on my should-have-read-when-I-was-younger-but-never-got-around-to-it list. Also on that was _Gulliver's Travel's_ which I finished a couple of weeks ago.) I also read _The 5 People You Meet in Heaven_ by Mitch Albom, which was a very sweet book.
- Exercise: I am currently 2-4 kgs heavier than I should be, due to lots of junk food consumed in London and Sydney. Mermayd mentioned that all exercise done after 20 minutes is pure fat-burning, so I am going to try and increase my treadmill time to 30 minutes, starting tomorrow. I have been doing 10 minutes of yoga, 20 minutes on the treadmill, 12x4 squats, 15x4 crunches, and sometimes 15 minutes on the stationary bike (but not all at once. Usually everything in the morning and the bike in the afternoon).
- Diet: Trying to stay off the junk food and eat healthily.

So that's what is keeping me busy till I leave for London on the 14th. I don't have time to look over this long post, so forgive me for any typos!

Love,
~*Leia*~

Summer days

September 6 2006, 1:25 PM

Ah, how I love the lazy days of summer. It just occured to me, while I was thinking about my health/exercise/diet etc. during school that I may have wanted to be healthy, but just never had time. And when I DID have time, like during winter or spring holidays, I was so physically exhausted from all that was going on at school that I just needed a break. You know, I've talked to many other kids my age and have found out that most youths didn't have as strenuous a school life as I did. I guess it really depends on so many things, and my family and I decided what we wanted and got it. My parents wanted me to go to the best school, and along with that came many academic responisibilities. But it was I who wanted to join many clubs, do community service, teach piano, go to my own music lessons, perform in concerts, etc. So I really can't "blame" anyone but myself for always being on the go and not really having much time to think about other issues, such as health. And anyway, I don't think I need to even blame myself. I had a really wonderful school experience and I am SO fortunate to have been able to do what I did. I look around me and see so many children who can't afford to go to school, not because it isn't free, but because they have to work from young ages to help support their families. I really was (and am) extremely lucky.

Wow, I really did digress from where I wanted to go with this post. I wanted to talk about how I am being able to exercise daily and really enjoying it! And how I am indulging in feminine routines, like scrubbing my feet and and my face and enjoying clean hair twice a week (rather than saving it all for Saturdays and making that my beauty day; even then, I hardly had time to do all that I wanted to). I am taking care of my diet and the pounds are just shedding off. I am making time for myself in so many ways, and doing things I enjoy, and I just feel so pretty and happy.

And in a week from tomorrow I will be heading off (again!) to start my new adventure. I have already started making arrangements, like finding some music teachers, looking at all the opportunities to join clubs, and trying to enrol in my classes online. I guess I should go and pack some of my warmer clothes. I am oh-so-worried about the cooler weather. I don't think I was built for the cold!

Love,

In London!

September 23 2006, 3:58 PM

Well, here I am in London! It's been a very exciting week for me. We are getting the floors redone in our flat, so that has been an adventure as well, plus I did all the orientation stuff at the university, started meeting people, etc. It looks like this is going to be a very interesting year. My workload is quite light - I only have to be at the university for 10 hours a week, which is spread over 3 days. I've also got my voice teacher all sorted out (she said I'm talented and have potential! Yay!) and am still working on getting a piano teacher.

My mum is leaving on Tuesday and I have NO idea what I am going to do without her. Luckily, I am here with my brother, so I am not completely alone, though our hours and interests are quite different. It's going to be a bit of a battle adjusting to living with him (we've been apart for 4 years while he was at university) and though I love him lots, it's hard to live with someone who has absolutely no experience or interest in housework!

My hair has been doing quite well. It's in need of a bit of a trim, which I will do on the 26th (I think that's the MM day...) I am still doing my twice weekly washes and my hair has IMMENSELY cut down on the greasies. Tonight is wash night and I still haven't decided what to leave in... maybe I won't leave anything in and will just wash it with shampoo in the morning. Recently I haven't been using conditioner at ALL; I don't even have any with me at the moment. I just don't like it. It makes my hair feel unnatural and greases it up, rather than nourishing it like shea butter and oils do. Hmm... I could oil it tonight... I haven't done that in a long time.

We are taking it easy this weekend, resting up well (I woke up, brushed my teeth, and am back in bed on the computer, lol!) to make sure we are fresh for classes on Monday. Wish me luck, everyone!

Love,
~*Leia*~

I got two birthday threads this year :-)

August 25 2006, 5:54 AM

Since the ladies posted such nice birthday wishes, I thought I would post the links here
http://www.network54.com/Forum/235232/thread/1155362197/Happy+Birthday+Dear+Leia%21
http://www.network54.com/Forum/235232/thread/1156431158/%7E%7EHappy+Birthday++Leia%21%21%7E%7E

Right now, it is 4.30 am and I am jet lag. I am used to long flights (it takes about 14 hours to get to and from London) and I am usually a good sleeper so I don't get jet lag. I don't know what happened this time! I went to bed at 12, and then woke up again at 3. I am currently reading _The 5 People You Meet in Heaven_ so I read for a while, then tried to sleep again with no luck. So here I am, online, catching up on the Loom and wondering when I'll be able to fall asleep!

Many of you have asked me to give a detailed account of what happened regarding university, so I might as well post that now! Most of you know that I left the university in Australia for many reasons. After doing that I came back to Dhaka for a couple of days, then flew off to London with my Mum. My family members decided that I should try to apply to a university in London for many reasons - I already know the city, the universities are very good, and I have tons of family members there (a grandmother and uncle in the same apartment block upstairs, a cousin who lives two doors down, an aunt down the road, a cousin who studies in Oxford... so I will never quite be as alone as I felt in Sydney). Anyway, there was nothing I could do till August 17th, because on that day they published a list of all the places left in universities that hadn't been filled.

I woke up at 8 am that morning to buy the newspaper and go through lists and lists of courses and universities. I'm not sure how it works in America but I think that over there you apply to a university rather than a subject. In England, you choose a subject to study at the university before you even get there. I had some idea what I wanted to study and also had some idea of what university I wanted to go to, but looked for hours at all the options I had available. Even after searching and searching, there was only one course I could find that I was really interested in (and I would rather not do something I am not interested in just for the sake of being at university). I called up the university and expressed my interest in that particular course, asking many questions about classes and lectures, trying to figure out whether or not this was what I really wanted. The first two people I spoke to were not familiar with my American AP qualifications, so I spoke to someone at an international office. He was very helpful and even offered me some other suggestions - I was interested in studying International Relations and French, but he saw that I had done well in both my AP English exams, and thought I might do well studying English. I told him that I had given it some thought and that I would rather do International Relations. And to my surprise, he offered me a place at the university over the phone! I was overjoyed that this long and continuous struggle about where I would go to university, whether or not I would get in, etc. etc., was finally over! A few days later he sent me an information pack about my course and the university, and I feel really happy with my decision. Plus I am so excited to be living in London, which is probably my favorite city in the world!

Anyway, our flight back to Dhaka was already booked for the 22nd, because we weren't sure whether or not I would get into university and Mum didn't want to stay far away from her sons for more than 3 weeks. So we flew back, and we are now making arrangements to go back to London in mid-September, because my classes don't start till the 25th I think. Oh, and I forgot to mention, I will be living with one of my brothers for a year! The two of them (twins) studied in Vancouver and just graduated with their Bachelors, and now one is going back to Vancouver to do a postgraduate course and one is coming with me to London to do his Masters - ironically at the same university that I am going to! But we are studying completely different courses so we will be at different campuses. Even so, it's good because we'll have the same holidays!

Okay, I am still not tired enough to go to bed. Maybe I should check to see if there is anything on tv. And then get myself a glass of warm milk with honey. Mmm.

Love,
~*Leia*~

Jet lag... and a sick family

August 25 2006, 2:57 PM

After writing my last post I was up for a while longer and slept at 6 am. Then I woke up at 9.30 am, and went BACK to sleep at 11 am till 12.30. On top of that, I have been hit badly by my allergies today and am just feeling awful. I haven't even showered, changed my clothes, or brushed my hair. Today is a really blech day.

My family isn't doing very well either! Both my parents are jet lag, having travelled with me to London. One of my brothers has hurt his ankle playing soccer and can hardly walk, and the other one is starting to get a cold.

Love,

Hair compliment last night!

August 26 2006, 10:43 AM

Last night I was wearing my hair in a simple braid (for lazy reasons, so that I wouldn't have to braid it for bed!) and a lady I know stopped me. She said she had seen me the previous night with my hair down and said that it was really beautiful and long. It's so nice to be back in the world of long hair compliments. I've never heard anything BAD about it, but sometimes in London I hear, "So how long are you planning to grow it? When are you going to cut it?" etc. Which makes sense, seeing as how long hair probably isn't on the top of the fashion hairdressers' lists . It's funny that males and young females (I have a 5-year-old neice) always compliment my hair, and it is just adult ladies who seem to think it is out of fashion.

Well, tonight is wash night. For the past few weeks I have been washing twice weekly instead of once, and I am actually really happy with that. I don't have immensely greasy hair when it comes to wash day! And I love the feeling of freshly washed hair. I may just go back to twice weekly washing, even if just for the summer. Wet hair on my back would be awful in the London winter! Tonight is meant to be herb night, but I feel like doing something more exciting. I've done two kitchen conditionings in the past two weeks; maybe I'll put henna in it tonight for a change.

Love,
~*Leia*~

A trim

August 31 2006, 12:38 PM

I trimmed a little bit on August 29th, the MM day for beautification. I also applied a conditioner that night (just one that I happened to pick up, I think it was by L'Occitane) and, after my morning exercise, shampooed my hair and rinsed the conditioner out. I think my 2x weekly washing is a good idea this summer, especially because I am exercising 6 mornings a week. I don't get very sweaty - it's light exercise, really; yoga followed by 20 minutes on the treadmill, sometimes 15 mins on the bike, squats, and crunches - and my scalp doesn't seem to sweat, but I don't like to take any chances. Besides, I don't think it is doing me any harm, and the cool hair feels nice in the summer heat. I'm sure that in the freezing London winter (anything is freezing compared to the Dhaka winter!) even washing once a week will make me freeze! I'll have to ask on the Loom for tips on staying warm with wet hair in the winter season.

On a funny note, my 12-year-old cousin was reading an article on WikiHow, and I came across this:

"Hair is your personal trait. Do whatever you want with it...almost whatever. Keep it healthy, be sure to get regular trims, and wash daily. Use hair serum to get those frizzies, and use mousse to get a certain style, and use hairsprays to seal a certain style. If you ever decide to color, or perm or whatever go to the salon. They're professionals they know what they're doing...they'll reccommend some styles, and some health tips for your locks so listen and take notes if possible."

From http://www.wikihow.com/Look-Great-in-Your-School-Uniforms.

Wash daily! Use hair serum/mouse/hairspray! Haha. I didn't find that to be very good advice, and my cousin didn't either! (Guess I've trained her well! )

A new hairstyle!

August 31 2006, 2:35 PM

This style was created by Emily B. Here are her instructions:

"Okay, so, you'll need a scarf, or a piece of fabric at least 60 in. long for this to work. First I part my hair (center or side; doesn't matter) and then put my hair up in a bun in the middle of the back of my head; it'll stay longer if the bun sticks out a bit. Then I take my scarf and lay it across my head like a headband, making sure that the center of the scarf is in the center of my head. Then I wrap it around my head crossing it UNDER the bun. Next, bring the ends up around the bun and tie in a half-knot (like starting to tie your shoes) at the top of the bun. Then I just tuck the ends in amongst all the overlapping stuff at the bottom, and voila! It's kind of cool. It looks vaguely Grecian or Regency in style, and it's a lot more stylish-looking for greasy-hair days than a hat or a bandana!"

I did this without a parting in my hair, and I used a wirey piece of fabric rather than a scarf. Here are my pics:

At the bottom of this page, there is a pic of a similar style.

Wow, it has been a while since I have given a proper update.

The past 6 months have just been a whirlwind of craziness. I've just had non-stop work in terms of school, French Honor Society, National Honor Society, the play, music concerts, AP exams, graduation! After graduation I had some friends from other countries visiting, so that was really busy as well. Plus I've got to go around and say goodbye to everyone - am leaving for Australia on the 18th! - and I've got to sort things out like my student visa, packing for Australia, getting courses, learning how to cook :| etc. So I have been really busy!

It's nice to get back into the long hair world, though, for more reasons than you may think. While trying to learn how to cook, I searched online for vegetarian recipes and found VeggieBoards. It was very good in terms of recipes and tips on vegetarianism, and ... well, I don't know how to say this without sounding awfully rude, which is not my intention. I guess I was just so used to the friendly atmosphere on the Loom that I was a bit surprised to see people fighting and attacking each other over trivial issues. I am NOT saying that any of the members are "bad" or anything else. I am just saying that it reminded me how much I like being at the Loom . There are two ways to make a point: the nice way, and the rude way that makes other people feel bad.

Anyway... back to hair. I haven't measured in ages - I think since the end of May! I am washing on Saturday morning, so I will try to remember to measure then.

Considering how busy I've been, I still had tons of time to read, for some reason! In June, I finished...

Lydia Cassatt Reading the Morning Paper
Three Black Skirts

(above two were from Olympia for Christmas )

Family Matters by Rohinton Mistry
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

Right now I am reading The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. I'm also reading a book on Raja Yoga by J. Donald Walters and have been doing yoga and meditating for almost 2 weeks now, every morning.

I've got some cousins who flew in from Pakistan, so I have to go take a shower and get ready this morning before I call them and make plans. I wonder what recipe I should try out today... I haven't cooked anything Indian in a while, so maybe I will today. Perhaps some paneer shahi (cottage cheese in mace-flavored tomato gravy)...

Love,
~*Leia*~

Lunch today - Chana masala

July 6 2006, 5:21 PM

Okay, I know this is supposed to be a hair journal, but it's MY journal so I can post recipes if I want . Umm... chickpeas have protein in them and protein is good for the hair. There we go, I made it hair related, hehehe.

This is the first successful Indian meal I have ever cooked, and what's even better is the fact that I didn't have to use a recipe! I looked at about 5 different recipes online and in cookbooks that describe this dish, got some ideas, and then made it myself. That is the beauty of Indian food. To each her own.

Chana masala (chickpeas in sauce)
Category: Main Dishes

Suitable for a vegan diet

Ingredients

1 cup canned chickpeas (drained)
1/2 onion, chopped (I used half because our onions are strong - feel free to use more)
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp garam masala powder (available in Indian stores)
1 tsp cumin powder
1 tsp coriander powder
1/2 tin chopped tomatoes (or fresh if you prefer)
1 tsp chana masala powder
1 garlic clove, finely chopped or minced
1 tsp ginger powder
1/2 cup water
vegetable oil
salt to taste

Instructions

1. Heat some vegetable oil in a saucepan. When it is hot, add the chopped onion and fry. The amount you fry the onion depends on taste. Sometimes I fry till transparent, sometimes I prefer them brown. Caution: Do not over-fry and burn the onions.
2. Add turmeric, garam masala, cumin, coriander, garlic, chana masala powder, salt, and ginger.
3. Add tomatoes and cook till they are soft and the mixture begins to thicken and the smell of the masala powders have lessened.
4. Add the chickpeas and half a glass of water. Stir to combine.
5. Cover the mixture and let it simmer until the tomato paste is of the consistency you desire (about 10 minutes).
6. Take off the heat and spoon into a bowl. Serve with bread (chapati, naan, paratha), rice, or on its own.

Additional comments:

Indian food varies a lot depending on taste. You will notice that I didn't include chili, while it is often cited in Indian recipes. I didn't add it because I don't particularly like it, but feel free to add chili powder or chopped green chilis if you want! The same goes for all the ingredients - add, subtract, and adjust according to your taste!

Yup, my hair is growing backwards. Hehehe. Actually, I had a big trim in between. In January I was 42", and at the end of May I was 40.5" ... so in about a month I've had 0.5" growth. That seems fair to me!

Hmmm... I think I need a new hair picture. I'll wait for it to dry, then take one.

Current Products

July 8 2006, 9:15 AM

I thought it would be good to make a list of everything that I use, because even I sometimes forget what I have and don't make use of it!

Moisturizing
- Baidyanath Mahabhringraj Oil
- EveryDay Hair Growth Oil
- L'Occitane Ultra Rich Hair Cream
- Lush Fever Massage Bar
- Lush Shimmy Shimmy Massage Bar
- Lush Snake Oil Scalp Massage Bar
- Lush Arabian Bright conditioner

Herbal
- Lotus Powder Plus
- Shikakai powder
- Sandalwood powder
- Henna powder
- Neem powder
- Bhringraj powder
- Reetha powder
- Amla powder

Cleansing
- Lush Karma Komba shampoo bar
- Lush Cinnamon and Spices shampoo bar
- Lush Dr. Peppermint shampoo bar
- Body Shop Honey Moisturizing Shampoo
- Timotei 2 in 1 Cucumber Shampoo and Conditioner
- Pure Roots Shikakai with Amla and Bhringraj Shampoo for dry & damaged hair
- Pure Roots Henna, Amla and Reetha Shampoo for normal hair

Some notes:
* I hardly ever use the massage bars, though I probably should
* The herbals are a regular part of my routine (though henna and Lotus Powder Plus are used much less often than the rest)
* The Lush shampoo bars are used usually for traveling and/or scalp washes
* The Timotei is gentle and used only for mid-week scalp washes
* The Pure Roots line I couldn't find online; it is an Indian brand. They are both great for cleansing the hair and not leaving it too heavy, and I don't use any conditioner afterwards.
* I have a lot more products than I thought I did!

A fun summer hairstyle... and a university update

July 28 2006, 1:49 PM

For those readers of mine who don't frequent the Loom, here are some posts I made about university news: http://www.network54.com/Forum/441285/message/1153615085/Thank+you+everyone%21+Quick+update... http://www.network54.com/Forum/235232/message/1153967324/Australia+update+%28OT%29

The crazy, hectic university search continues!

And now for my summer hairstyle - gets it all out of the way, and still looks cute! I couldn't really get very good pictures so I experimented with some angles. I hope the style can be seen clearly in them!

Close up

Top view

The style is basically a modified swirly bun. In the last step, while grabbing the tail, what I do for this style is just not pull the tail all the way through. I pull it through enough so that it can be properly secured with a stick. If it is pulled all the way through at my current length, I can let the extra length hang down for a short ponytail, or I can wrap the length around the bun and secure for a neat and tidy bun.

Deep conditioned last night

July 29 2006, 10:20 PM

I used one of my favorite deep conditioners,L'Occitane Ultra Rich Hair Cream. After wetting my hair last night, I slathered it on, put on a shower cap and towel, and slept very soundly . Then this morning I rinsed it out - I'd say it was in for about 9 hours - shampooed my scalp with my Body Shop Honey shampoo, and let it airdry into extra-ringletty waves. It is VERY soft and smells heavenly. Slightly overconditioned, but that is the case with all store-bought deep conditioners when used on my hair. It has been a while since I've done an all-natural deep conditioning, so maybe I'll do that next time. The only downside to those is the smell... even with lots of essential oils added I can still end up smelling eggy or yogurty.

I'm off to London on Monday morning! On August 17th, I will be able to see what universities have places left open, so I will be on the phone all day long! I really, really hope that I get to start studying this September. I don't mind working for a few months, but right now I'm in "study mode" and I'd just like to get the studying over with before I start properly working. sigh I hope everything works out for the best!

In other news, the Bangladeshi government seems to have cancelled all the cable television till the 31st. Apparently it's been poisoining the minds of the Bengali citizens, and the eventual plan is to have it cancelled altogether! It's of no HUGE consequence to me, since I'm not a great TV fan, but it does mean that I'll miss Desperate Housewives this Sunday evening . Oh well, I guess I'll have to catch up with it later.

Off to dive back into _Gulliver's Travels_ - can you believe I haven't ever read it?! Better late than never! - and then have a good night's sleep!

I love Lotus Powder Plus!

January 3 2006, 1:06 PM

I recently bought this from the EverydayMehndi site - http://everydayhenna.com. It's a great site to order off of, customer service, shipping, and everything. So, I got the Lotus Powder Plus for Christmas from my brother, and used it this last weekend. Oh, how I love it! It was easy to mix up because I'm used to mixing up henna and other herbal pastes. I applied two tablespoons of the mixture, mixed up into a paste, to my dry length and ends. I washed it out the next morning and shampooed the scalp, let it dry over the day, and combed it out at night. The next day, I took these pictures:

My hair turned out
- Soft
- Few tangles
- Shiny
- Smelling AMAZING!
- Extra wavy - don't know why

In other words, I love this product!

Scalp washes... and some rambling...

January 5 2006, 9:55 AM

I washed my scalp with Timotei yesterday. It's a great shampoo for scalp washes because it lathers really well and gets all over the scalp. I would be weary about using it on my length, but my scalp is happy with pretty much anything that is slightly moisturizing and that keeps it clean for a few days.

This weekend I am due for my fortnightly herbal washes, but since the Lotus Powder Plus was herbal TOO, maybe I'll do a moisturizing wash instead. Plus, I'm going to Bangkok on Tuesday, and I thought I would curl my hair before I go - to look nice as well as to make my hair shorter, because it's HOT there. And just-moisturized hair curls better for me than just-herbed hair; probably because herbs make my hair a bit stiff and thicker. Usually my moisturizing washes are completely natural, but I was thinking I'd mix it up a bit and use a commercial deep conditioner for once.

In the Drawing Room I was responding to a post about the mining incident. I was about to post this there when I realized I might offend someone if I did, so I'm posting it here instead. I do, of course, feel terrible about their deaths and their families; however, I couldn't help noticing one fact. In Bangladesh, we have about 9 deaths per 1000 people every year. It always takes a massive catastrophe when thousands of people die for our news to make an appearance in the news outside of Asia. Not only that - China suffers from droughts that kill something like 3 million at a time, and there are so many countless numbers of deaths in Pakistan and India. It makes our news, of course, but when just 12 people are killed in a mining incident in America, the whole world hears about it.

That leads me to two conclusions. One - our deaths just aren't important enough to make the news outside of our region (which is really sad! ) OR two - that other countries don't care to educate their audiences as to what is going on in other parts of the world. The second part particularly bothers me, because I was never one for nationalism, always globalism. It's because my "nationality" isn't really something I can proudly call my own - I have a British passport, I'm half Indian half Pakistani (crazy in itself, as you would know if you knew some of the background between India and Pakistan), and I've lived in Bangladesh almost all of my life. Talk about culture craziness. Not only that, but most of the kids in my small school are faced with similar backgrounds. We call ourselves "global citizens" - a name that fits me well. And my favorite thing to say when issues of nationalism come up is that "we all live on the same piece of rock." That is, instead of tearing each other to pieces because we don't share the same culture/religion/nationality/color, we should recognize that we all came from the same place, and we are all sisters and brothers. Nationality just helps you give yourself a home and an identification; i.e., I live on this part of the big chunk of rock. I'm not saying that being proud of one's nationality is wrong - if it makes you happy, stick with it by all means. But it's when we start going to war, or saying "I'm better than everyone else because I'm Indian" (and believe me, that is NOT an unheard saying) that it hurts me. Because we're all the same, and we should be treated like that. (Now let's all hold hands and sing "Kumbayah." LOL)

Okay, so.....hair? Heehee, got a bit off track there.

Love,
~*Leia*~

Wearing a french braid today...

January 6 2006, 12:55 PM

You know, every day of my holidays this year I've been putting on nice clothes and doing my hair nicely and wearing my contacts, but I haven't been going out anywhere or doing anything special. So today I decided to put on sweatpants and a t-shirt, and my hair is back in a french braid. Plus I'm wearing my glasses. Mum thinks I look like a kid :P.

This break is coming to a sudden close! I've just realized that this next semester is going to be my last semester in high school ... Oh my goodness!!!! I never thought I'd ever see this day! I did a really intense piano practise today and my audition tape is going to be recorded in just 3 days! After that, I send off the last of my uni stuff, pray it gets there on time (argh Bangladeshi post!), go to Bangkok for a few days with my family, and then school starts!

I reaaaally hope I get into this university. I have been working so hard and I really hope they accept me! Please keep your fingers crossed for me!

I have been cooking a lot the past two days. I posted the recipe for ll-natural homemade snack bars in the Drawing Room. This morning I tried a new sweet protein bar recipe, and I will post it if the results are good.

Ooh, I love the deep conditioner!

January 7 2006, 4:48 PM

My hair isn't weighed down or heavy at all! The name of the product is L'Occitane Ultra Rich Hair Cream. I'm going to Bangkok in 3 days so I'll pick up a couple of tubs while I'm there. I can use it for when my hair is really in need of a pick-me-up. Plus it smells amaaaaazing. And it really DOES revitalize curls! I took a couple of pics and this is AFTER combing out. My hair is always 2b wavy right after washing, but the waves disappear almost completely after combing out. Not with this conditioner, though! They are still there, perhaps a little wavier than usual!

Anyway, on to the pics...

And the other one is in my sig.

I don't compromise my wash days fer nuthin'!

January 9 2006, 8:08 PM

We are leaving tomorrow on a 4-night trip to Bangkok. I only wash once a week, so it can be easily assumed that the 4 nights and 5 days will fall somewhere in between my wash schedule. BUT our last night there is a wash night, and I don't compromise my wash nights for anything . LOL! It's a herbal wash, so I got out a Ziplock bag, stuffed it with 6 tablespoons of my herbal mixture, and put it in my suitcase! Once the mixture is mixed up (which doesn't take more than a minute), it only takes 2-3 more minutes to put it on my hair! Really, my routine is so simple and easy. Less than 5 minutes mixing everything up and putting it on my hair at night, and in the morning all I have to do is rinse out and shampoo my scalp. While I'm there, I'll just shampoo with hotel shampoo - my scalp isn't too fussy, thankfully!

Anyway, the reason I went through the trouble to get a mixture for over there when it's our LAST night in Bangkok that I'll have to wash is because we arrive back the day before school starts. That means I'll have greasy hair ready to wash, but will have to wash that night and have it wet in the morning to school. It'll stay wet all day, and I definitely don't want wet hair in my face all day long when I'm trying to study. Plus it doesn't look very nice while wet because I don't comb it through, and while I never dress UP for school, I don't like to look untidy or unkempt.

So, there we have it. My hair is officially too important for me to skip a wash day. LOL! Oh - that reminds me. I had better pack some shea butter for my face that I can just use on my ends in case they get dry (although they really aren't even STARTING to get dry after that intense deep conditioning I had!)

Anyway, I'm off to finish packing. It's so exciting going on a trip with the "whole" family (okay, so my brothers won't be there and it'll only be a few extended members of the family on my father's side who I happen to live with anyway...) for once! Whenever I travel it is usually with school or just with my mother. I hope this is going to be fun, and I hope I don't forget my camera!

See you all when I get back!

Finally got a second of breathing time!

January 21 2006, 10:39 AM

I got back from Bangkok a week ago, but have been so incredibly busy with school and everything that it has been impossible for me to do anything leisurely!

My trip was fantastic! My grandparents also gave me $500 shopping money, which I immediately forgot about and gave to my mother while I went around being a tourist, but it occured to my parents (when my camera broke down for the second time on a boat) that my camera is getting old, and why don't I buy a new one? YAY! So I did! I got an upgraded version of my old one, this is an EX-S600 with 6 megapixels, optical and digital zoom, macro mode, and tons of other features! I took a picture of my hair the other day but haven't got around to putting it on the computer, so here it is... I wonder if it is noticeable that the quality is different! It was taken the day after I got back, after a herbal wash I did while still in Thailand!

I did a quick mini-trim today. It was the day for beautifying and my ends have been feeling quite dry lately.

I have a new camera! Skips about and dances....

Love,
~*Leia*~

I have been really bad about writing in here! I have to measure tomorrow. I don't even know if my hair has grown at all with all the stress I've been through this month!

To make up for being such a bad journal writer...

December 2 2005, 3:09 PM

Here are some pics. Hehehe.

Last week was a "skirt" week (mainly because I had gotten waxed for my recital :P) so I had a lot of skirt + hair down days. It was fun. Here are some pics.

This first one is a simple white skirt, with my hair down and a little tiny bit woven into a braid.

My hair looks SO light in this next picture! I thought I would do a little bit of a "side" shot. My hair sure does look thin!

Here I am in icky sweatpants. This was a pre-henna picture.

The next three are post-henna. I mixed in 1 tablespoon of my henna conditioner herbal mix (I need to get some pure henna powder), 1 tablespoon of indigo, and 1 tablespoon of sandalwood (mainly for the smell ). A post-henna length pic:

A color pic, though I think it is only that dark at the top. The lower bit is harder to color, I think.

And another color pic. My hair doesn't look like this at ALL. I was turning away from the sun, but I thought it was a cool pic anyway.

Another skirt + small braid pic. I love this style!

Love,

Hair wash...

December 3 2005, 8:18 AM

I put together:

- a tablespoon or so of honey
- a teaspoon of cinnamon
- a dash of olive oil
- two tablespoons of yogurt
- 1 egg
- 2 drops rosemary eo

Left it on my damp hair all night and rinsed this morning! Then I did an ACV rinse, followed by a shampoo of the scalp (BSHM of course!) My hair is still wet, so I am going to measure and wait for the dry results!

Herbal wash week...

December 9 2005, 10:31 AM

Tonight I'm going to oiling my hair: bhringraj oil on the length, lavender hair growth oil on the scalp. I haven't done this in AGES! Then after letting it sit and soak in for a while, I'll put my herbal mixture on.

My hair has been behaving really well recently. I haven't been paying it much attention, but once in a while I try to put shea butter on the ends before I sleep. I think it will really appreciate the oiling tonight, even though it is miraculously not very dry, because oiling + herbal wash is a definite winning formula for my hair.

In other news, I've got final exams starting on the 18th. I only have 4 exams out of my 8 classes (band, choir, study hall, and senior project have no exams), so hopefully I'll be able to do them the first two days and then take Tuesday off. And winter break starts on Thursday the 22nd! I'm so excited! It will be a difficult time, though, because I have to write my first draft of my senior project (AHH!) and do my final university application. The one I'm applying to in January is my top choice, so I really have to work at preparing the music all through the break. My recording is on January 11th.

I just cannot believe that I'm going to be graduating in 7 months. It is so unreal. I have been at this school for 14 years now, and I'm just not ready to leave yet! And I love my home, and my room, and my family! Hopefully I will get into my top choice Singapore university and I won't have to go as far as England to study. Singapore is only a few hours away, so I can come home and visit for long weekends anytime I want.

I'm only 17! I'm not ready to grow up!

Love,
~*Leia*~

What a great week!

December 13 2005, 12:31 PM

I am having a fantastic week!

On Sunday, I wore my "Gemma t-shirt." There is a girl in her sophomore year who was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in her back in October, and she is currently in Bangkok in the hospital. She is getting chemotherapy treatments every couple of weeks, and many of my friends who knew her well are in touch with her and talk to her almost every day. Many people have visited her, and she is staying strong. We hope to have her back in Dhaka (but maybe not school) in around May.

Anyway, in her honor, the senior class designed t-shirts. They are white with red on them, in the front it says "Let's fight cancer" with a red fist, and on the back it says "We have hope for Gemma" or something similar. We gave them free to all the senior students, bought with our class council money, and other students and teachers wanted them, too! So we decided to make more and sell them to whoever wants them. Gemma will decide what she wants to do with the money, and we are currently looking at donating it to cancer funds .

We don't want her to think we've forgotten her, so her father takes presents and things from us every Thursday. The first time the whole senior class wore our Gemma t-shirts, it was international AIDS awareness day, so we wore our red ribbons on the shirts. This time, we got together and made a video for her, with all of us wearing her shirts. She will get a shirt, too .

For that I wore my hair up, and the shirt size is "large" so it was like a dress on me, haha. It went down almost to my knees! That was an "ugly" day, so yesterday I decided to leave my hair down and have a "pretty" day. It is getting cold here - 15 degrees Celsius - which is really cold for our part of the world! Leaving my hair down really warmed me up . Today I had a semi-pretty day as well; I found a light pink shirt in my cupboard that must be my mum's, and I wore it with my favorite "skinny" jeans and a black sweater. My hair is up in a swirly bun with two of Fox's sticks that have light pink beads on them. AND my parents were in Bangkok over the weekend and bought me EIGHT PAIRS OF SHOES :D (among other presents... they are the sweetest!) so I wore a matching pair of white flip flips that have a light pink "thong" and diamontes on top. All matching!

I had a half-day from school today, and tomorrow and the day after are review days, so I don't have much homework except to STUDY FOR MY EXAMS that are on Sunday and Monday! The ones that will take the most studying will be AP European History and Psychology because there is a lot to remember. Luckily they are on different days! AP French Language and Composition and AP English Literature won't be too hard for me, so I don't have much to study for those. And I only have 4 exams! Yay!

Hmm, wasn't this supposed to be about hair? LOL! Anyway, I should go and get started on review notes!

Love,
~*Leia*~

No more exams!

December 19 2005, 8:44 PM

Yay! The semester is practically over for me! I'm sooo happy! I get a day of school tomorrow because I don't have any exams, and then we have a full day of school on Wednesday going to all our classes and getting exam results plus work for the holidays, and then I have BREAK! Plus one of my brothers is coming tomorrow! YAY!

Even though I'm rejoicing now, I DO have a lot of work to do over the break, namely:

- Practising piano and making my final recording
- Writing my last uni essay and sending in the last of the documents
- Doing interviews for my senior project
- Writing the first draft of my senior project (ahhh!)

And I have tooons of recipes to try out! If any turn out well, I will definitely post them in the Drawing Room. My cousin also gave me a "New Healthy Cooking" CD with over 1000 recipes, so I am off to check that out as well!

*Skips off, excited as can be!*

Wow, I didn't know I had so much growth the past month (0.7"!) My ends have been feeling like crap so in a couple of weeks, November 15 I think the date is, I am going to trim about an inch off my hair. I wanted to do 4-5" but I think that might be a bit too traumatizing all at once!

Everything is looking brighter :)...

November 5 2005, 9:39 AM

I had a really bad week last week, but now everything is MUCH better. On Wednesday, we had a half-day from school, and Mum and I made a date! She has psoriasis, so she is supposed to sit in the sun whenever she can. We went on the roof with our books and our puppy (who had a GREAT time chasing the crows), soaked in the sun, and had a nice read. It was lovely. At the same time, I put oil in my hair and let it down so the sun would help the oil get in my hair.

The next day, I braided my hair, still with the oil in it. I washed it a day early; Thursday night instead of Friday night. I did a herbal wash and my hair turned out lovely!

PLUS we have a 3-day weekend and I haven't done ANY homework at ALL. I am enjoying just relaxing! I am teaching this afternoon, so I will already be in work-mode, and I'll probably do most of my homework today.

Ahh, lovely long weekend. I think I'll go watch cartoons before piano class.

Love,

Some non-hair related silly quizzes...

November 6 2005, 8:12 PM

Your Element is Wood

Your power colors: green and brown

Your energy: generative

Your season: spring

Like a tree, you are always growing and changing.
And while your life is dynamic, you are firmly grounded.
You have high morals and great confidence in yourself and others.
You have a wide set of interests, and you make for intersting company.

What Element Are You?

I think most of that is true .

Your Birthdate: August 12

You're a dynamic, charismatic person who's possibly headed for fame.
You tend to charm strangers easily. And you usually can get what you want from them.
Verbally talented, you tend to persuade people with your speaking and writing.
You are affectionate and loving, but it's hard for you to commit to any one relationship.

Your strength: Your charm

Your weakness: Your extreme manipulation tactics

Your power color: Indigo

Your power symbol: Four leaf clover

Your power month: December

What Does Your Birth Date Mean?

Heehee, December IS a special month for me .

Love,

Hair wash day today...

November 12 2005, 9:29 AM

I did a modified version of my kitchen-ingredients wash. I mixed together:

- 1 egg
- a couple of tablespoons of yogurt
- a splash of oil
- a tiny bit of shea butter
- 2 drops sandalwood eo (but I might as well not have, because I can't smell it at all!)
- a splash of Proactiv protein treatment

I added in the protein because my hair has been feeling really limp and thin lately. It REALLY needs a trim. I am trimming on Tuesday, and I'm definitely taking at least an inch off. I think my hair looks a lot fuller and thicker when it is around tailbone length, so that might be the length I end up if I reach classic and find I don't like it. Who knows! Time will tell .

Anyway, I applied the goo on my damp hair last night, left it in overnight, and rinsed this morning. I dunked my hair in an ACV mixture, shampooed my scalp, and rinsed everything out. It is currently air-drying while I finally catch up with all my online stuff.

I have sooo much work these days! I hardly have a minute to myself. It'll all calm down once my recital this Friday is over, but it'll still be hectic. I can't wait till December 22nd - winter break! Ahh! I hope it comes soon!

I am off to check the Loom . I might take a picture today and then pop in later to put it up.

Love,
~*Leia*~

My recital is over!

November 19 2005, 5:26 PM

WHEW. It was fun! It was definitely an amazing experience, and I can't believe it's over. But it is, and that's fantastic. :D

The picture of my hair didn't turn out well, so I will post another one later if I have time.

I had an AWESOME hair spa treatment. The lady first oiled it down with some GREAT-smelling oil, and then put on a "Four Spices" treatment. I know amla and shikakai were in there, but I don't know what else. Whatever it was, my hair turned out REALLY well. They shampooed/conditioned it there, but I left there with towel-dried hair because I wouldn't let them blow dry it (you know me! ) and my hair has never been softer, shinier, or smoother EVER. I looooove it! I am definitely going back next time my hair needs a boost!

Love,
