Gaylord review - my thoughts

by (Login only1harry)

Dave:
Read parts 2 & 3. T. Gaylord liked the gun. Can't argue that the 460 is a superb German rifle that anyone would be proud and priveledged to own.

It seems his review was not as thorough as the 350's which he did a little over a year ago (in .22). He only mentions 3 pellets and I was surprised to see his #'s were on the low side with ~17ft-lbs. His friend's higher velocity #'s were still below the 350's in .177. Pyramid's #'s were a lot closer to the 350's but none of them were higher. It's weird how everyone is getting different #'s with the 460. Gaylord's review of the 350 were slightly above Straight Shooter's #'s. He mentioned it kicks hard and has some buzzing. Sounds similar to my 350. Accuracy is not that far off either. I always got 0.35-0.4" groups at 20yds with the 350 from a sitting position resting my hand on a small fat decorative pillow on a table, before the mount adjustments broke. 1 out of 5 pellets usually going through the same hole and that's usually smack at the center of the bullseye. Offhand shooting I have not managed any better than 0.5" and the 460 seems to have the advantage here as Tom also said that's it does not seem to be hold sensitive which is one of the most important things to me. Kudos to the 460! The 350 is definitely hold sensitive (IMO) and I have to just lay the forearm in my left palm with very little or no grip on it to make it shoot close groups when standing or leaning on something. My problem is the mount would misalign so frequently every 10-15 shots, that I think if everything did not move, my 350 would be even more accurate.

I just decided to run some cleaning pellets through the 350, but first I went to the bathroom scale and measured the cocking effort twice. It's dead-on at 36lbs as advertised. The 460 is 44lbs and seems to be dropping. All in all I think if you had a scoring system like R&T and C&D do with car comparisons, the 350 & 460 would probably be very close as their plus & minuses may average out at the end. I would probably buy the 460 (over the 350) for its less sensitive hold that should produce better (or easier) accuracy results, and the beautiful stock that Gaylord said was one of Diana's finest.
