High tones (such as those made by the metal) and low tones (such as those made by wood) do not produce the same results. They also do not register into the recording device the same. While bass frequencies tend to rebound, treble tones become absorbed and are non reflective. In the process of rebounding wave forms, there is a phase angle that can cause complete cancellation. This is what caused ghost images on the old TV sets, and is the basis to modern noise canceling headphones!

Unless you are properly calibrated in an anechoic chamber, the science of sound can be daunting. Get some light sensors and a light kit.
