Leveling a scope...

I had an inexpensive, magnetic bubble level ($3.00) for the lawn cutting deck of my garden tractor. Not sure of how 'level' this tiny wonder could be, I gave it the test. A 4-foot level costing many dollars more is what I trust for my project. This was used as base-case to compare...

This picture shows the tiny lawn cutting deck bubble level;

Another photograph shows the 4 foot level, tried and true;

I leveled this by using shims until the bubble centered in the tube.

This photo shows the tiny bubble level mounted atop the longer 4 foot level.
I turned the tiny level both ways to ensure true readings...

Once the tiny bubble level had proven itself, I attached it to the breech block;

After you attach the tiny bubble level to the breech block, you can determine the rifle's 'cant'.
We want zero cant, or perfect level by way of tiny bubble level.

Now, out at 25 yards, hang a plumb line. A plumb line is a line hanging from a branch with a weight tied at the bottom. You can trust that gravity will keep the line straight up and down, just as the masons do when constructing tall buildings. Use a brightly colored line. Many hardware stores sell mason's line in bright green and other florescent colors.

While maintaining level on the breech block, rotate the scope in the loosened mounts until it aligns with the plumb line. Be sure to check, then double check to see that the breech block is still level, and the vertical line of the reticle aligns with the plumb line.

Your scope should now be cant free.
