but the question of distance is a relative one. Let's see, 70 feet (23 yards) up the pine, and the base of the pine was 45 yards out...
23^2 + 45^2 = distance^2
529 + 2025 = 2554
distance = sqrt(2554) = 50 yard shot by line of sight.

I used the trajectory to the base of the tree, and my zero is set at 55 yards (too far, I know) so a bit of hold under did the trick.

They are very smart but like us, they have moments of craziness. I was lucky enough to be there at the right time. There have been huge groups of them passing through here recently and they never make this mistake! Well, never say never. Right?

The first time I dropped one from a group, the rest went mad, circling, cawing... and I missed that golden opportunity. I never reloaded. My mouth hung open and I was amazed to see so many. This time I did reload upon hearing that ciaos, and dropped two more into the creek. Those shots were closer to 70 yards line of sight on less of an upward angle. They are big targets and if you can steady your adrenaline-rushed nerves, aiming center mass, they drop! At one time I thought they were amour-coated or something. It was simply bad shooting on my part, and probably lack of confidence.

Patience is part of it, luck is too. Study their habits at set times of the day. You'll have your way with them. They are smart, but not smarter than you... Good luck!
