Once me and a friend of mine baited some starlings with bird seed and bird feeders. Soon the trees filled up with a dozen or so starlings that weren't too nervous around people, so we were able to get within 7 yards of them.
We had Benjis and a 664 that day. But we also had two Daisy 93s, two Crosman 1008s, and a Crosman 357-6. And figured the long guns wouldn't be too good for "CQB" distances because they were too long, too loud, and weren't semi-auto. So we used the guns we felt would work.
We each took a 93 and a 1008 and my friend took the 357-6 and we proceeded to kill the starlings. The Daisys were loaded with nickel coated BBs and the 1008s and 357-6 had Beeman "Special Coating" Wadcutters.
Each starling recieved double or triple taps to the COM and most were dead before they hit the ground, the ones that weren't recieved head shots from the 357-6. People like to decry BBs for hunting, and I agree with that fact, but only if you're using one BB. But put three of them into a starling's chest and it won't matter if you used a .25 Talon or $30 Wally World CO2 guns like we did.
And wadcutters are magical in instances like this, I placed one of the Beeman Wadcutters into the junction between the starling's body and head, and the upward trajectory caused the head to shatter like an egg, something that I doubt would happen with a pointed round.
Though this may not be viewed as "sporting" by some of the elitest Fudds, we achieved the same goals as all airgun hunters do. We dispatched the quarry (a pest quarry as a matter of fact) as quickly and as painlessly as possible. AND we had fun doing it. So I can only imagine how much easier and more enjoyable it would have been with airguns set up to shoot 3 round bursts and full automatic at 20 rounds per second. Though I would probably stoke a Drozd with Gamo lead roundballs so I can hit the target with more force than with regular BBs.
So if you have an intrest in using a Drozd or similar gun for hunting I'd say go for it. But try to keep distances under 10 yards and use a decent red dot to aid in precise shot placement. Oh, and aim for the chest instead of the head, because those guns don't have the inherit accuracy of PCPs or Benjis and won't place rounds as precisely as said PCPs would. The chest gives you more room for error because a less than perfect shot might punch a lung instead of the heart but it would still be fatal, but a less then perfect head shot maybe blow off part of the skull without actually touching the brain, leaving the animal alive and in pain.
YMMV,
