It could be plastic coated...

To reduce friction or something. But I can quote on the AM77/2100, I own 2 of them and I can safely say that they do not have any plastic at all on the pump mechanism (with the exception of the piston and foregrip, of course). If they do have plastic on them it could either be just the canadian version, or the company trying to cut costs.... But I cannot see plastic compressing spring that puts out 12 FPE without breaking.
