Re: whats wrong with my gun?

In short, your rifle is probably too powerful for what you are hunting.

Your pellets are probably going through the birds body so fast that the shock doesn't kill it right away and it is flying off to die a few hundred meters off. I used to have the same problem years ago with a Daisy 880. The pellet would go all the way throught the bird and out the other side instead of dropping all of it's kinetic energy inside the body of the bird. After a while of thinking that I was missing them, I started noticing a few dead ones here and there around the yard with blood stains on their feathers. They were actually bleeding out rather than dropping like I had expected.

Try shooting them at a longer distance or shooting them with less fps, (if you can adjust the pellet speed). More power isn't always the best thing to have and this case exemplifies that to a "T".

Something else that you could try but, I don't think that it would have a whole lot of effect, is try using flat headed pellets. They are slightly more likely to stop inside the bird and, therefore, leaving their kinetic energy in the body. By staying in the prey, they are more likely to set up a shock wave that "jellifies", the cells of the internal organs leading to more shock and quicker death.(More accurately phrased, the shock wave of the projectile causes the cell walls to rupture and stop working. The only truly instant kill is by stopping all brain waves from reaching the body, hence the head shot).

I hope that I haven't made this simple issue sound more complex than it really is! In summery, here are several things to try:

1). Use a lighter pellet. (More likely to stop in the body of the bird).

2). Use a flat headed pellet. (More likely to stop in the body of the bird).

3). Go for longer distance shots.(Gives your pellets a chance to slow down some before making contact with your target).

5). Go after bigger game, like squirrils or oppossums. (Year old phone books are in season where I live right now. They are not as tricky as rabbits but, they do give you a way to gage the power of the pellet. You can count the pages your pellet reached to give you a rough idea).

6). Adjust your rifle to shoot slower, (Maybe 8 pumps instead of 10).

7). Go for head shots only. (No matter what type of pellet you use, if you smash into the brain buckt of anything, you are going to either kill it or make it wish that it was dead!).

BONUS POINTS! Only going for head shots will give you serious bragging rights!

If G-d didn't want us to shoot animals, then why did he make them so tasty?
