There is more of a recoil to shooting a springer and it does make it a little harder to get tight patterns. That is why I practice with it a lot. No, really I practice a lot with it because I enjoy shooting! LOL!
As with any tool, each has its own techniques to get the desired results. I have learned, and figured out the hard way, a few tricks with my Daisy PowerLine 1000 that allow me to get pretty decent patterns at some pretty good distances. I generally use a 33 meter range, (home built and backyard placed, of course), for most of my practice and for tuning in my scope. The main thing that draws me to the springers is the added distance, not so much the power of the close kills.
I was using a DPL880,(which is not a springer), until I wore it out, and although I was able to get great patterns in short ranges, (up to about 20 meters), it fell short of having the "one shot, one kill" power that I wanted for the more distant targets. I often found that the DPL 880 would hit the target and not kill it as quickly, leaving the animal to suffer. Up close, this was never an issue but, at 30+ meters, it was.
In short, accuracy is almost everything. Hitting the target and making it mad is not the goal I set for myself. I would rather totally miss the squirril than injure it. Of course, with practice and the willingness to use the enviroment, (i.e. leaning against a tree, shooting from a more stable position, etc.), one can get excellant groups at distances that many non-springers simply can't reach, much less bring down the target.
Perhaps you have access to a better selection of air-rifles to choose from or simply have more money to spend on it than I do but, I find that a springer does the job quite nicely and at the range that I often take prey. Besides, I enjoy the challenge. I feel there is more than enough room in the air rifle world for springers as well as pumps and CO2's.
All air rifles and air pistols have their own sets of problems and solutions. In the end, it comes down to a matter of personal preferance and finding the best tool available for the job at hand. If you want accuracy, practice. If you want distance, you might have to shift up to springers. It's more often an issue of the skill of the operator than an issue of the tools real, or imagined, short-comings.
