I tan a lot of my squirrel hides...by Ken H. (Login tommyatkins) |
[/IMG]. If the hair is coming off it's due to bacteria and is called "slipping". Salting the hides is only the first step in tanning a hide. Start by skinning the hide as soon as possible after killing. Scrape off as much of the fatty tissue as possible then wash any blood from the hide.Pat or wring out the excess water then salt the flesh side of the hide and work it in till no more salt will stick. Fold the hide in half with the flesh(salted)side in. Roll the hide up and put in a cool place(I have an old refrigerater I use for hides and freash game). Let set one week then scrape the flesh side of the hide again. The salt will have toughened the membrane on the flesh side of the hide. Remember this is only the first step in tanning. If you want a complete step by step process let me know. The way I tan is with Lutan-F and produces a very soft, white colored hide. | This message has been edited by tommyatkins from IP address 75.100.231.14 on Dec 11, 2008 7:06 PM |
