Picked up a new Crosman quest 1000x

by Colin O'Donnell (Login The_Colin)

I've always loved .22 air rifles and they will always have a spot in my heart. But consider my situation, I've had to make an accomodation. I've been out of the airgunning game for a good year now, but i have recently been to a friend's house to go plinking with a Red Ryder. I was hooked and the urge to get back in the game was stronger than ever. As a side note, my BS 392's seals completely went kaput about a year ago.

On impulse, I leaped to Academy in the search for (didn't want to wait long) an airgun. I wanted another 392, pledging never to go for a springer (old fashioned, I know), however it was a bit out of budget, considering the hassle of fitting a scope. So I frantically searched for a crosman .22 C02 pistol, to no avail. All that was available in that respect were Crosman 1377(?) pistols. So i swallowed the pride and went for the most powerful springer for my budget's allowance, a Crosman Quest 1000x, and a 250ct tin of .177 pellets. Rounded out to $113 total.

In my hastiness, I took it out of the box in the parking lot, and I was content with it. I cocked it with little difficulty, and the solid feel of the cocking action reassured me, more than making up for the plastic gunsights, trigger guard, and average wood quality and appearance. The length, a full ten inches longer then my 392 made me laugh, but it was still easily handled. The trigger felt pretty nice on my finger, and broke nicely as well, however I was moving from a very seasoned 392 with a gritty, dirty trigger(damn thing would still stack pellets at 15 yards). Now I haven't had the pleasure of using a legendary quality springer like an FWB or Theoben, but again, I was content.

On my first foray with it out in the wilderness (with the iro-....plasticsights-- mind you) I took out a mourning dove at a forty-degree angle from nearly 15 yards away. At that distance, the front sight was nearly bigger than the target, which airgun manufacturers need to understand is unacceptable! If this was a battle rifle, the sight's sizes would be OK, but not for an airgun which is desgined with small target shooting in mind.

The shot went in through the chest, under the wing, and exited opposite side through the neck, just under the jaw. The bird dropped like a stoner out of high school. The destroyer pellets had nice performance and I deem it adequately powerful enough to replace the .22 pellets I was coming off of. Pellet consistency was terrible. The tin the pellets came in was well suited for carrying twice the amount of pellets it came with, and many pellet skirts came smashed. I'm not sure about accuracy, but if I had my way I would have bought RWS pellets. The recoil effect was nice and realistic feeling, mimicking a firearm.

Overall I am pleased with the rifle, and I can't wait to get it fully broken in and have a proper airgun scope mounted on.
