I didnt see the post, though.

Posts mainly get deleted when you talk of illegal activities, such as killing songbirds or federally protected migrating game birds.

by Mike Teague (Login sniper00006)

But get a rag and douse it in the stuff... then light the rag on fire... if it lights and stays there.. then dont use the oil...

Personally I would never put Tranny oil or any other kind of car oil into a gun. I dont think its worth risking... you put too much in there.. and it will mess the gun up.

Why dont you just invest in proper lubricants?

Transmission fluid might be OK on some pneumatics but definitely not springers. Better to NOT lube a springer at all unless you know how.

120 yards, Head shot, with a PCP 2250, 1400 psi, 721 fps.

by (Login sniperdad69)
Airgunhunters message board/moderators

I had been doing some long range target practice, and later the same day, a Squirrel happened to be on the tree I had used earlier.

He was upside down on the side, with his head sticking out. I knew that it would either be a good hit, or a complete miss, almost no chance of a body shot, as most of his body was hidden by the tree.

I was as surprised as he was, only I was happier than him. On inspection of the Squirrel, the Crosman Premier had entered his skull just behind the eye, no exit.

Cheers, David.

Can give lots of information on them, just ask.

My TalonSS in .177 with 18 inch barrel and lots of mods...

my friend and i.

by (Login bghunter)

are finally started to get into the world of pcps. he is lookin at the condor, i am gettin into the talon ss. its alot of money to spend for both of us so im really tryin to do alot of research. we are both lookin for guns that are very accurate and able to take squirrels and other small game at distances up to 50 yards no problem. i had a few concerns with the talon because, althouhg i may be mistaken i wasnt sure if the 800 fps for .22 cal would be able to produce all that. ive also heard a few bad things about the talon on a different forum a while ago. what is your opinion on the overall quality of the gun? and what kind of groups do u get between 20 and 50 yards?

Yes, it is a lot of cash to drop on an airgun...

by (Login rob3dr)
Airgunhunters message board/moderators

I'll start with the Condor....
The first runs of the Condor had some issues with not filling to 3000psi. This is remedied now with the new valves being sold in the Condors.

Some of the Talons had a little bit of that, but out of my two, I didnt see it. Both guns are capable of great accuracy out to 50 yards. My Condor has taken crows at 82 and 84 yards. One shot, one kill, not so much as a flop.

Accuracy out to 50 yards will not be a problem. If you do your part, you should be able to place 5 shots within a US Quarter at that range without much problems. Out to 35 yards, easily 5 shots within a dime.

The quality of the guns are fine. Not quite Daystate, but they dont cost $1500 either.

Some points to consider with these...

you will need a way to charge the gun and pumping by hand is rough. This is not the same as pumping a small tube PCP. I'm talking about a 490cc tank that needs to be filled to 3000psi. I have a CF tank that I use to fill these.
Hand pump... $200 or so. CF tank... $400 or so.

Another consideration is noise. Even the TalonSS is loud. The Condor is almost as loud as a .22 rimfire. If you cannot shoot a .22 rimfire in your area, you'll likely not be able to shoot a Condor.

Another point is do you really 'need' all that power? Small game within 50 yards will fall just as quick with much lower powered airguns. I've seen pics that Rich has taken of squirrel he has dropped at 35+ yards with an R7 in .177 that spits out CPL's at a whopping 560fps.

Not trying to sway you from the Airforce airguns, they are a lot of fun... but yes, do your research. There is a lot to consider.

k thanks but...

by Tyler (Login bghunter)

accuracy sounds pretty good. right now were used to an slk for me and a cfx for him. so thats the kind of accuracy weve adapted to for up to 20 yard shots. i was reading on pyramidair and theyre ratings for the noise level of the ss talon was lower than both springers. is this true? if so thats hardly a problem. he is buying a scuba tank to fill with i believe. and the power is fine, were both used to squirrels and rabbits, but are quickly moving up to skunks, coons and other animals. just wondering, for the c02 version of the talon shootin about 650 i believe in .22, is that enough power for those types of animals, and will that produce relatively the same accuracy at those yards?

Everything Rob is saying is accurate

by Adam SoCal (Login shootistinsocal)

I have a Talon SS and have taken opposum, racoons, crows and many other animals. The talon ss stock with shoot CP's at 855fps and kodiaks at 755 fps. And you can easily get the Talon SS much quieter.

You are invited to come and see what is going one at talonairgun.com and take a look at all the mods that are available.

You do not need a PCP

by (Login only1harry)

to take racoon, skunk (groundhog, etc.) up to 50yds if you have a Magnum springer in .22 that shoots accurately. There are several springers out there that shoot .22 CP's at well over 800fps and some even 900fps once broken in and with a thorough lube tune like the RWS Diana 350 & 460. On the GTA forum, there are a couple of people shooting 14.3gr CP's at 860-880fps with their completely stock RWS 350 .22. That's about 25ft-lbs (FPE). Other lighter .22 pellets go through at 900fps. All they had done was a complete lube tune with tar & molly and more than 1,000 shots through their guns. They also shot the heavy Kodiak .22's with their 350's at over 700fps which carry just as much or more Energy than the CP. There 's not much you can't drop up to 50yds with that power provided you pay attention to good shot placement like head/neck shots for the larger small game (10+lbs) like racoon and groundhog (possom, etc.). One guy took a beaver with his 350 in only .177 cal! I have taken several large 15+lb groundhogs with my .350 .22 and I 'm waiting for that large racoon to make another appearance. The CP's and Kodiaks go right through their scull at 30-40yds with my 350, and go down fast. Others are getting squirrel and rabbit at 80-100yds with the 350, provided you have the right scope for those distances. I wanted to get a PCP too after I got the Diana 350, but realized with good shot placement and accuracy a Magnum springer can be very lethal passed to 50yds or more. All you need to know is the proper holdover.

In fact, prior tuning any gun, since I'd be replacing the spring anyway, it might be the best opportunity to see exactly what the results would be.

Next on my list is the RWS-34.

I saw the study

by (Login vabch)

I was relieved do to see the study that was done on leaving a gun cocked for extended periods of time It started with a whole week and then went to a year. A solid week resulted in something like 10% loss, a whole month 25 percent etc. I guess 8 hours is not to bad. I just shot some raptors and the sound barrier is cracking louder than before. Before. it would crack at a certain tree in the field far away, now the damn thing cracks right out of half the distance. I know I got more velocity.
You are right, I will never do this again, but then again crap happens, and buy a good gun.

Here is the chart

by (Login vabch)

The good news is that the study was done for (1) week 168 hours, onward to 26 WEEKS.
It was interesting to note that even after 1 week 168 HOURS the drop in energy was really not too significant. In fact the author gives a case for changing his hunting habits. If in the field you hunt with the gun cocked longer, not much real damage can take place, and consequently maybe a yearly tuneup would be worth the cost to make the hunting trip more enjoyable and not spook as much game. I doubt my gun suffered much, if any in only 8 hours especially being new. I also noticed that this morning it is back to exactly where it felt before. I will leave it for 72 more hours for the spring to be sure that the spring completely adjust to the normal tension (MEMORY). Anyway here is the chart that you might want to keep on file.

This is a post I made a while back and it still applies today. I'm not saying that we should all be perfect in our grammar and our spelling, but this is a forum. airgun is going to be more accurate than you are. With the Career, you can expect very good groups out past the 50 yard mark, if you do your part.

Something to consider would be the size of the gun in relation to your body. The Career is a large gun and I've known of some adults who have had problems with it's size.

would be my choice..i dont know if your into pumpers but this is prob my fav gun in this class..its extremely accurate and and only requires 8 pumps, which i find easy. you may have minor frustrations if u plan to mount a scope but personally i think it doesnt matter since the gun is so nice..the special edition however has a grooved receiver. ive never been into break barrels so much so maybe im a bit biast, but it is truly a good and vulnerable gun at a very decent price(im not sure what it would be in the states) but it should deffenetaly be in your price range, and it has quite adequite power for hunting, shooting about 650 fps or more (advertised 685). its a buy you basically cant go wrong with ^_^

I have split pencils at 20 yards some what consistantly out of the box. As for mods, check out PSP, Power Stroke Pneumatics, getting you .22 rimfire power outta this gun. But as for stock, you can take squirrels out ot 35 or 40 yards with this rifle. And if you are worried about pumping, it's no big deal unless you do alot of plinking.

Accuracy

by (Premier Login ledlauncher)
Airgunhunters message board/moderators

Out of the box, I was able to hit a soda can 9/10 with open sites from 30 yards with 5 pumps each shot. I think she was delivering 11 fpe @ 8 pumps using 14.3 grain cpls... enough to take squirrel out past 35 yards if you get a good kill zone shot. Put a scope on it and you WILL have no problem.

Skyler has made some long range kills with his. He tuned mine to 20 fpe. It is a canon and accurate.

An explanation...

by SharpShooter392 (Login SharpShooter392)

Skyler M. mods I think all Crosman airguns, except for the springers. But when I said rim fire power I was pertaining to the amount of power Skyler can get out of a 392. If you don't know, a rim fire is a small, powder burning rifle, mostly used for plinking and/or target shooting and small game hunting. A rim fire can get a 35 grain slug up to about 1000 fps where as Skyler can get a 392 up to around 900 fps (from what I've heard) with a 16 grain pellet. If you need more elaboration, just ask... I know it's not written too clearly.

A bad day hunting beats a great day at work.

the accuracy...

by Sean (Login gopher_getter)

from the 392 is amazing..i cant say ive had the chance to ever do any target accuracy shooting with one but i had with my uncles 397 and it was outstanding..never once ever did i have an unsatisfactory shot..i shot crows and cans and paper targets with it for 2 weeks and dont have one complaint..with my backpacker or shouldered 2240 i can put 3 pellets through the same hole at 15 yards(as far as my basement range will go) so i'll vow that the 392 will do the same..and as for power you should have no problem taking rabbit with them, and squirrels also.

Benjamin Franklin 342...

by Wade (Login steene)

I have a Ben Franklin 342 .22 cal pumper that I bought in 1986 or 1987. It is the predecessor of the 392. It has taken Raccoon, opossum, crow, rabbit, squirrel, pigeon, and feral cats that were eating our chickens and domestic rabbits. The feral cats were far and away the toughest of all, followed by the raccoon.
Up until yesterday, I have never had a serious problem with it. My 10 year old son and I were out on a squirrel hunt and he let the muzzle end rest in the dirt when we stopped for a rest. The fresh oil on the linkage pivot points attracted the dirt into the pump tube. Being a kid he didn't know any better. I plan on cleaning the tube out and driving on.
Several years ago, I was hunting in -10 F temps and the rifle would lose power. After I got home and thawed it out it held air just fine. My theory at the time was that it had some moisture that had condensed in the reservoir and possibly a small ice chunk had been interferring with the seal in some way.
Another gem is the C9 or Blue Streak from Sheridan. The .20 caliber rifle has a slightly flatter trajectory than the .22 and has the snort to get the job done downrange. I have a 1986 model that I bought off a guy at work. He still had the original box of pellets, owners manual, and tag hanging off the trigger guard.
As I understand it, Benjamin bought out Sheridan (or maybe the other way round). Then Crosman bought them. That why the rocker and sliding safties went away and the Crosman triggers appeared. Very sad development in my opinion. I don't mind the trigger as much as the loss of the tang safeties. Quality wise they are still very good, the new trigger has aftermarket parts and mods available.
Both of these are still very good, easy to shoot rifles with power and accuracy. You can't go wrong with either one.

The English Sparrow

by (Premier Login ledlauncher)
Airgunhunters message board/moderators

The English Sparrow, aka the House Sparrow, is an invasive pest in the US and should be removed whenever possible. Every safe shooting opportunity should be redeemed.

Before you do so, take time and observe, using binoculars or spotting scope, and become familiar with the details that separate this type of sparrow from others. Visual markings will become more distinguishable as you spend time observing birds in general. The last thing you'd want to have happen would be to make a mistake and wind up killing a native species. This 'skill' can require some time and practice, but once you see the difference you won't forget.

Male has black bib under his beak and is easiest to spot.

Birdhouse protection scheme

by (Premier Login ledlauncher)
Airgunhunters message board/moderators

I was reading many articles online about attracting and keeping purple martins, bats and other insect-eating birds over the past few days. In one article, the author writes;

Don’t be discouraged if sparrow or starling nests need to be removed repeatedly. You will discourage them. You will win.

I guess there are some who would need such words of encouragement in order to keep the pests away from the purple martins' homes. To the contrary, I am now inspired at the mere notion of the challenge.

With purple martins working during the day, combined with bats working at night, the local insect population should take a major decline. No chemicals, no sprays... just me standing guard with an air gun to protect and defend against the predators to these truly native creatures. In fact, I'd gladly offer my services for free to neighbors wanting the same.

Duty to kill Starlings and English Sparrows

by (Login vabch)

If you are a hunter and you subscribe to preserving the balance of nature, then it is your duty as a air gunner to destroy as many of this invasive species as possible. Have you ever stopped and just observed a flock of starlings eating seed on the ground. You see 2 may 3 or 4 song birds trying to compete for forage against tens of big, beefy starlings. Not only do they compete for food, but rob nest, eat the eggs of song birds etc. A hunter who goes into the field and has a bag limit of deer and continues to pass up a doe, shooting only bucks is not a sportsman. If you are a sportsman you should devote time to killing these pest that are so destructive to our environment. Buy seed and spread it. When selecting a target, identify a female in the group and take her out. And please, if you have 'nutria' where you live, please allocate at least one weekend to destroying these stinking rodents. The damage they do to our wetlands is devastating. Much like the "snake head" fish is destroying our rivers and streams.
Great post Rich!

5 female starling a week =?

by (Login vabch)

Just for thought. A starling has a about 1 brood a year at 4 to 7 eggs. Lets go with 5.
Ok, so you shoot 5 females a week. This is aout 60 females a year. Total about 300 less birds a year for each shooter. Nothing noteworthy but does help in the big picture.
One note about starling. Do not touch them with your hands or get any of the blood on you.

study found that European Starling droppings contained C. jejuni, L. monocytogenes and C. psittaci, all human bacterial pathogens. In the United States, starling droppings provide a growth medium for Histoplasma capsulatum, the fungus that causes histoplasmosis in humans. All of these examples indicate that the spread of disease by starlings to humans and livestock is a potential threat. Spread of disease among wildlife is another facet of this problem.

You must take a mandatory hunter's ed course. Here is a great information source for you, and you should read through it thoroughly before hand. In addition, there are email addresses and phone numbers for you to use. Our tax dollars pay for all this so don't be shy... ask them all of your questions after you finish reading.

Pellet question?

I have a new RWS pellet rifle. I love this rifle and really want to take care of it. I have been shooting nothing but RWS pellets out of the rifle. I have a lot of old standard Crosman wadcutters left over. The standard walmart variety, not the premiers. Question? Will they damage my rife if I use them. I notice they do not fit as tight.

as long as its a pellet and it's lead you're fine. But going from expensive RWS pellets to the cheap ones you will probably lose accuracy and most likely you will have to resight your rifle IF you plan to use the Crosman pellets from now on, otherwise dont touch the sights.

One more question

by (Login vabch)

OK, I also have some of those gamo raptor pellets. So they are lead and some copper, which RWS say;s do not shoot copper. Discard these. About $20.00 worth. Gladly do it to protect the gun.
Another question. If a pellet gun is cocked over night, will this really harm the rifle? I did this on one of my other guns, a inexpensive crosman, and did not really notice a big difference in velocity. (I have not moved up to buying a meter yet, I am still a rookie) but just a general feeling.
Question NO.# The crosman storm I bought last month is rated at "up to 1000 fps" as well as the RWS. The RWS has a hell of a lot more power. I do not need a meter to prove this. I mean a LOT more power. A recent review of the RWS as according to the author does, the RWS,does indeed seem to have more power than older model's. Do you know anything about this?
Question NO#4 I will be moving up to a 22.cal in the near future, and I am so impressed the the RWS quality, that I will probably go that route. I want guns that will be handed down to my son ( now 7 years old) in the future. I am leery of the new Beemans, which has sold out to the marketing gig! except for the 9 series. I spent many years in Germany, and really appreciate their craftsmanship. I trust them. I do however own some Beretta shotguns and their craftsmanship (Italians make the best shotguns) is also superb. I really appreciate your opinion and would love to hear from you . Thanks in advance.

Well...

by SharpShooter392 (Login SharpShooter392)

Just to start off with I do agree, Italians make the best fire arms, as I am a very happy and proud owner of a Benelli SBE2 But as for all your other questions the Raptors are fine to shoot, the copper BB never touches the rifling, therefore not harming your rifle in any way. And the only time I would leave a springer cocked over night is when it's brand new and needs to be broken in, so no I would not leave it cocked. Also, a 1000 fps rated gun is most likely only doing 850-900, 950 if you're lucky. As for it having more power its not really the speed because the power plants are so closely related (both rated 1000 fps) but it could be that you're using a heavier pellet which would cause the gun to seem more powerful because it has more foot pounds. Other than that I would wait for another member of the forum to respond, I'm not a real big springer shooter but Rich and Liam, among others and would probably be happy to respond to your questions.

PS- I have shot Raptors out of my 397, which has a brass barrel opposed to steel and never had any ill effects. And one more thing, this is Rich's forum if you don't get a response on here...

I just saw a new 1377 in the store about 2 hours ago for $54.95, Mills Fleet Farm. If you wanted to add a longer barrel and buttstock you could turn it into a carbine. My little carbine is a joy to shoot and carry (light).
