Can you list the model numbers of the drivers and the crossover? That's the best way to know what you have. Also, some pix would be sweet.
Altecs are very efficient. Typically over 100dB per 1 watt/meter. You can drive them well with a few watts, which certainly opens up your choices for amp experimentation.
Post some info and I can dig into my vintage Altec files for some specs. Sweet!
