Big L100 project

A guy over on the lansing forum pointed out that when he put his L100 drivers in a larger cab (14x14x29) and used a 4x8.75 port that the bass became a little more articulate ,still quick but that the low bass resonant frequency dropped and output GREATLY increased .

So I tried it , he said that before it was taking 3 pair of centurys to "shake his clothes" and that in the big boxes only one pair was needed . I did not find that to be the case .It was a litle more articulate , but the output did not increase noticeably.

In order to check it without getting deeply involved I hacked up an old mitsubishi speaker which roughly met those dimensions made a port from pvc pipe , blocked the other openings and ran the l100 woofer full range . The woofer is a 123a (alnico V magnet) . That speaker was allowed to run full range in the L100 also since it rolls off smoothly on top.

A big surprise was just how well the 123a works full range when not augmented with mids and tweets . I've had three way speakers that didn't sound as good as the lone 123a !

Alas it did not " shake my clothes " so I put the 123a back where it came from ! I'm gonna do essentially the same thing Don did and build subs to do the heavy work !

Still need more amp but I had as much amp today as the guy who did the big L100's he was using a 35wpc marantz I was using a 36wpc sansui ,then an optimistically rated late model yamaha at 85wpc .

As for BIG L100's I believe that they are more hifi , but you can still do a little bit better by rolling the bottom end off and using subs to pick it up , I'll bet.

The subs I am considering will use jbl le14 speakers in a box about the same size as a citation 7.4 .

Plug the L100 ports

Joe, when you get your subs plug the L100 ports. It will tighten up the lower freqs. I x-over my subs at 80hz. Seems to work well. If I move it up to 120 or so, it becomes boomy.

There's a pair of LE14 drivers on ebay. Why did you select the LE14? Are you putting two speakers in one enclosure? I considered the 2213H and 2214H. They are hard pounding drivers.

The le14 is a very good , commonly available speaker

I'm sure it will do nicely in a sub enclosure . I only need a little more bass and spl than I already have the le14 will probably put me over the top ! Where I like too be ! That's a good tip on the x over I'll do that .

2 enclosures with the le14's front firing

May 25 2006, 3:39 PM

they'll be placed in under the L100's . the boxes will be based on the citation 7.4 which was a very good sub in its own right and used the le14 . I'm sticking to the well trodden path , same as I did with the L100's !

The plan's working well so far !
