listen to evh pu 1,5&6 this is a "plexi" with either 4 or 5 12's in front their website doesn't make that clear 4 34's in back .

general impressions of the sound are all I'm asking for .

Sounds like Eddie nailed Mick Ronsons sound...was listening to the clips earlier this morning, and thought I've heard that before. Slapped on Hunky Dory's Panic in Detroit and there it was. Even Life on Mars has that sound.

It's a great sound...I loved it! Mick used a plexi I believe with a 4x12 cab, but don't take my word for it... I'd never ask you do do something that crazy.

I think

January 12 2008, 10:26 AM

that those clips were played with an evh pickup . duncan sell's em as the '78 model . Eddie made a crazy pickup one time that was supposed to combine "a woofer and a tweeter in one humbucker"
one coil was hot the other cold the overall output was a little more than a paf but he got there in a roundabout way .

Not to hijack my own thread or anything but did you ever hear racer x's version of moonage daydream ? smokin' ! contraband did a cover of mott the hooples all the way to memphis that was great fun also.

wasnt able to find racer x's

version of Moonage Daydream...but I gave some of their (Paul Gilbert?) a listen. I found a file marked Eruption. As turns out it was a short interview with him saying how Eddie was his main influence, and then he breaks into Eruption on the guitar. Also spun Frenzy and a few others. No doubt about it he's a talented lad. I can see him playing Hot for Teacher...but I can't see him writing it;) if ya get my drift. Eddie gets ragged on alot in some areas for being a shredder, but I always liked him. I wasn't always crazy about the genere of shred...but he could but he could do it and still rock.

Yes indeed, that boy had some might tasty hooks. He was very timely too. Page and Led Zep had by that time become Dead Zep...Clapton was too laid back to breathe...Even The Stones were putting me to sleep. Eddie was like a gift from the music God...no one had really heard anything like that before. Problem is that he had alot of bad imitators...but he catches all the heat cause he is Eddie. And alot of his detractors couldnt play eruption if they had 5 life times to practice. He was alot like Hendrix in that respect.

Can't find a All the Way to Memphis, Contraband file...but I loved the original Mott version. I think Motts guitarist at the time was Ariel Bender...Hunter had a few guitarist during his Mott phase, I think with Mick Ralphs who went on to Bad Company also did a stint with him...he hooked up Mick Ronson after Mott but nothing ever really came out of it. with Gotta keep looking for that Contraband version.

Ronson did a sizzling version of Lou Reeds, White Light White Heat on his solo album Play Don't Worry or something like that after the Bowie thing.

Damn that was along time ago...thanks for making me feel old joe...lol

That is not a complex sound.

It's edgy, kinda crunchy. Take a 2204 circuit and boost the preamp with electrolytic caps across the cathode resistors and maybe larger plate resistors and less series resistance. You get more preamp distortion and it's edgier. Drive it with single coils.

No reason why we can't build an amp that will do that as well as a softer tone with as much distortion but controlable depending on your gain settings. Those clips represent a lot less gain than some amps, but it's right where I like to build stuff.

Totally doable, mah bruthuh!

don't understand all Tom's stuff , some of it , but I don't need to cause that's in tom's zone .

never heard mick ronson ? either hatta check that out .

I think it was evh pu 1 that showed good touch response and evh pu 5 that showed good response to bent notes IMPORTANT not all amps reward bent notes ! to put it mildly.

If you've got the time http://www.splawnguitars.com/sound_clips.htm

has clips of hotrod marshall types the "pro stock" and "quick rod" have 3 gears 1 hot rod '59 plexi 2 hot rod '87 3 super hot '87 the quick rod also has a clean channel

the clips of a pro stock by supercharged 350 (GAG) sound like they are right in the hunt .

Next step.

You wanna build an amp? I think the 2204 circuit is the best place to start. You know you need a chassis, transformers and either a built up tag board (circuit board) or a tag board kit. Modifications will be easy, don't worry about that yet.

What's the plan, Stan?

well

January 14 2008, 4:40 PM

what's the big diff between a 59 and a 2203/4 ? the mv ?

I was kinda thinking about doin' up a 59 or 220x based on these layouts ,there are pdf links .

http://www.sonicdeli.com/ThunderTweakWeb/tweaks.htm

using those boards cause it would be easiest .

mercury mag front and back robust specimens , seems unlikely to me that sag or saturation would get my rocks off, I would deffer to paul on that.

I was also thinking just 3 12ax7's to begin with a very modest amount of gain by way of resistor/cap spec in the preamp and then "creep up on it" maybe add a fourth 12 if I feel like it's "tapped out" or whatever , don't know ,will have to learn as I go.

I have chassis material and stuff I may build the monster on a big piece of phenolic I have so I'll have plenty of room nothing would be crowded . It's about 3'x3' and 3" thick .If I ever finish it I could squeeze it onto a plate of 6061 I have, make a proper ,transportable amp out of it. That could be a long ways off......

That's the only plan I have but I've got my grey matter on a low simmer , which is how it works best these days.

joe this might be of some interest to ya...

It's a huge 20mb site set up by a guy who does 2040 clones. Be patient it may take some time to open, and even if it ain't what you want...ya gotta admire his willingness to put it all together.

Very Tidy.
