Need speakers

My faithfull old infinity's bit the dust recently, not sure how, I bet my kids could help explain it. 15" cones are toast. These are 20+ years old, and gettin beat up. Time for new.

Any opinions on good speakers for the next 20 years? Locally I am looking at B & W's (maybe 684's or 704's), also looking at Klipsch RF-63's. Other thought is set of Magnepan's. Need to travel to Denver to listen these are any other choices.

Have Pleanty of amp for any of these, Carver 4.0t amp (325w channel @ 8ohm). Was able to get this and preamp through genuine carver service last year before it shut down. Should be good for many more years.

Any other thoughts? Listen to lots of rock and a little of everything else. Kinda afraid I'll buy something tall and skinny with a bunch of 5" cones and hate it due to lack of bottom end. I do have 12" 250w powered sub so it may be alright. Just used to rattling things when I wanna get loud.
Thanks,
Shane

how many cubic feet are the boxes ?

June 7 2008, 9:24 AM

I'd think about fixin em up with some jbl speakers . what kinda xover does it have and what switching frequencies ?

don't buy any tower speakers those just happen to be fashionable right now . I've listened to some klipsch towers and they didn't do anything for me also listened to some french focals which had a 35,000 $ sticker they had a fair amount of fine detail , otherwise not worth anything like 35,000.

I have a set of jbl speakers which have 4628b cabaret components in a special enclosure that jbl sold for home brew types which are 5 cubic footers they were reffered to as en5c .

I call my speakers cabaret V's , got less than 1000 bux in them , they are worth more than what I paid for the individual pieces, and they will rock real hard .

It's been fun , I'll never do store bought again .

What I got

June 7 2008, 6:57 PM

The cabinets are about 4 cu. ft. inside volume. Crossover brand unknown. Baffling/stiffening probably insufficient.

PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS
General
Frequency Response 44Hz - 25kHz (+/-3dB)
Crossover Frequency(ies) 500Hz, 5.5kHz
Sensitivity 102dB (1 watt/1 meter)
Power Rating 10 - 300 watts
Nominal Impedance 8 ohms
Woofer 15" (381mm) polypropylene coated
Midrange Driver TWO - 4.5" (114mm)polypropylene coated
Tweeter 1" (25mm) high-output polycell

I can afford new stuff (I couldn't buy $1600 in groceries but I can justify good sound).

To repair infinity's off brand replacement cones run about to $100 ea. Thought maybe I'd buy some cones and put these and put in shop with my old hk citation stuff. A little afraid to put new speakers in reach of my 15 year old at this point though.

I listened to the jbl's before I bought the infinity's (maybe 4628's), only money stopped me. I was a fool and traded some altec lansings for furniture. The furniture was crap, the speakers remain a good memory.

What is wrong with the Infinity's?

Alos, crossovers should be matched to the drivers used.

The damage

June 8 2008, 12:53 PM

seems to be limited to the 15" drivers. Noticed the lack of proper sound last time I tried to use them, the other speakers in cabinets are still working. The 15" cones do not move under power and also seem to be physically locked up when touched by hand. I am assuming something like a coil winding got hot and burned a wire.

I will probably buy cones and get on with life for now. This weekend I had to spend some of the stereo budget on a new head unit for truck to get hands free cell again. (I average about 150 miles a day in truck and do lots of business on phone, hands free is a safety must). Was hoping to spend no more than $200, will be in $500 instead.

Any thoughts on these as replacements?

or a little cheaper:

Would welcome any thoughts on reputable place to buy from or brands trusted. The original cones probably are closer to the cheaper units I linked to. About two years ago I had to redo the foam surround at edge of cones. I know they didnt weigh 20 pounds each.

my BIL has an infinity sub which my nephew smoked

June 8 2008, 4:10 PM

I got the OK to just order a replacment driver for it . The driver that we receieved was a much better specimen than the stocker MUCH BETTER . So you might wanna give HK the benefit of the doubt and at least price replacements thru them .

the jbl 2235 is the 15 that probably 90% would prefer it has a heavy , curvilinear cone that'll pound out massive plump bass.

the E145 is about the most accurate 15 made by jbl or anyone . straight sided , very light ,deep cone .

the 4628b was a sound reinforcement speaker

June 8 2008, 10:27 AM

It's a utilitarian PA speaker but the woofer was one of the best all around woofers that jbl offered it worked as a bass guitar speaker and worked well enough as a hifi speaker to make the spot in jbl's K2 speakers . the 2404 tweeter works like gangbusters as well the "biradial" design really did work at smoothing it out it's a very good speaker. The 2118 mid was designed for sound reinforcement basically it's smooth VERY light cone generally kind to vocals , not often too revealing .

they're tougher than shoe leather and right now they can be had cheaply ! they originally came in a 4.5 cube box they sound better in a 5 .

Yeah, maybe a little over zealous

July 6 2008, 8:22 PM

I couldn't dis-assemble without outright destruction. My oldest wanted one of the magnets to mess with. He will probably fix all my crt's with it.

I did buy some replacement cones after comparing $200 to $1500. The ones I bought have so far been better than the originals. Only complaint is the powered sub I have is about 1/2 as cool as it used to be.

After some thought and simple math (my youngest is 12), I decided that investment in new gear was nuts as my kids are as hard on stuff as I am and this will only get worse.

I have about a month on the repaired speakers and the neighbors hate me more than ever. They are getting to know my wide taste in music better all the time.

Thanks for all the input.
Shane
