Been doing some tracking over here...

Question: Should the tube in my GT MD1A be glowing like the inside of a typical guitar amp??? I see nuthin' going on. Maybe it needs to be worked hard for awhile so as to send come current through the thing? I certainly let it warm up for 30 minutes or more everytime.

Should it glow or is the lack of a glow in this case normal? Mic sounds as it always did, which is just fine.

Paul

p.s. Hey Dave, does your Second Gen MD1A's tube glow?

The filament is the part that glows.

But the filament is inside of the cathose, which glows but not as bright. this is inside the plate structure. so, if not much of the cathode or the filament can be seen, the glow might not be very visible, especially when looking through the holes in the case. How does it look in the dark?

If you are concerned, I think I would probe the voltages to the tube. I don't recall if the filament for those is set at 6 or 12 volts, but if it were found to be like 10 or 4, then I would say the filament supply circuit needs fixin.

I've Got a Model 1B

September 23 2008, 2:40 PM

I have a GT Model 1B mic and if you hold it just right you can see the filament. My mic uses a sub minature tube that's different than what they used in the earlier Model 1's which I think used a 12AT7 or at least that style of tube(9 pin miniature).

Yep, Dave, I remember. We actually had a discussion about these GT mics back in 2004; in fact I just found the thread.

Would be interesting to take pics of our mics with the cases off and compare/contrast. I'll bet your MD1B has a bigger condensor.

Did What I Should've Done in the First Place....

September 26 2008, 9:12 PM

....and what I'm usually known for: I took the MF apart. That is, just enough to see if the tube glows or not.

The tube is covered in a black coating with a bright orange "GT" logo on it. While the electronics were out of the machined case, I powered up the mic and turned off the lights.

She glows from under the black coating and through the exposed (uncoated) glass at the very bottom of the tube. Didn't bother with a voltage check, etc...as I noted before it still sounds as it always did. Prety tiny condenser.

Thanks again,

Paul

p.s.: Interestingly, we are currently mixing in a ProTools studio in San Francisco, and for the lead vox we tried an interesting setup:

After capturing 4 tracks of lead vox per song with the above setup, we hoped to blend those 4 tracks and get a good, round sound...of course we dropped the C1000's but believe it or not we ended up using most of the MD1A and backing it with the AT4060! Whooda thought...

I Like The GT Mic

I really like the GT mic for vox and bass guitar. I've also used it a lot on percussion overdubs such as tamborine and shakers. It has a nice sound.
