Make sure to read some of the articles listed in the bibliography, which include articles by noted historians, as well as an interview with long-time friends of Frank Hopkins. The one below, in particular, sheds some light on the lack of documentation about some of the races FH rode in:

There is also a letter from someone who knew Frank Hopkins for fifty years and recalls seeing him in the Wild West Show.

Of course, the movie, as is usual, takes some liberties, but on the whole, there does not seem to be any lack of corroboration of Frank Hopkins being a noted horseman who won over 400 long distance races.
