Spartans and American war machines.

Elsewhere I wrote the following statement about the Spartans.

*A war machine that would be unstopable but could not hold the peace and not able to govern those they conquer? Does it sound familiar?*

I am not comparing sizes or magnitudes of power, what I am comparing is attitude. The Spartans were able to defeat their enemies but because they were so focused on war and the making of war, they were unable to govern those they conquered.

Are there parallels of military oriented philosophy? Does a military culture make it impossible to govern? What about the British?

Thoughts?

Interesting pov. I would also point to the Byzantines, who although they were masters of war on their high age, they fought out of necessity. Their organisation on the other hand was most excellent, a Roman heritage.

you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward,
for there you have been,
and there you will always long to return.
