"Now, while still pursuing the method of realising our overall strategic concept, I come to the crux of what I have travelled here to say. Neither the sure prevention of war, nor the continuous rise of world organisation will be gained without what I have called the fraternal association of the English-speaking peoples. This means a special relationship between the British Commonwealth and Empire and the United States. Thus, whatever happens, and thus only, shall we be secure ourselves and able to work together for the high and simple causes that are dear to us and bode no ill to any. Eventually there may come—I feel eventually there will come—the principle of common citizenship, but that we may be content to leave to destiny, whose outstretched arm many of us can already clearly see.
What's up with your spelling Anglo? Put too much Finnish vodka in your cornflakes this mornin?
"Oh race of Turks, children of iron and fire, founders of a thousand homelands, wearers of a thousand crowns. If the sky above did not collapse and the earth did not give way, oh noble race, who would be able to destroy your nation and institutions..."

"The Turks were the worst-behaved P.O.W.s in Chinese hands. They would never cower or kow-tow to Chinese threats, Chinese punishments or Chinese rewards. They stuck together, even when the Chinese threatened to shoot the lot of them! The British P.O.W.s stuck together and survived better than the "Americans", but those warrior Turks were the toughest survivors in proportion to the entire P.O.W. population under Chinese control. In a pinch, it would appear that "The Turkish Dream" includes much more national identity, national pride and strength of character than does "The American Dream". Lack of identity, of knowing who one is, precludes the establishment of a community, without which there can be no continuity and hence, no future."
Finland the home of hero Suko Kolkka. Finland, 1939 - 1940.
During 105 days of combat Suko was credited with 400+ enemy kills as a sniper in the Winter War. He used an iron sighted Mosin-Nagant rifle. He often took the war to the rear of the Soviet lines, causing much fear and frustration as this area was supposedly safe. In addition to the kills he made as a sniper, Kolkka also was apparently quite fond of the submachine gun as he made an additional 200 kills with it during this same time frame. Hunted often by the Soviets, he outlasted them all, killing the sniper sent to hunt him at 600 yards with a single shot after a running duel of several days. Like Simo H
, Suko Kolkka exhibited the hard determination and skill that kept Finland a sovereign nation even after its inevitable defeat. At the end of the Winter war a Soviet General is said to have quipped, "We gained 22,000 square miles of territory. Just enough to bury our dead".*
Wow, another Vassily Zaitsev. I would love to see a movie about that Finnish sniper. "Enemy at the Gates" is one of my favorite war movies ever.
