This thread is not meant as a flame . . . millions of men, of most European nationalities, gave their lives to defeat Nazism and these so called "volunteer" forces were a mixture volunteers and conscripts.
The only 100% foreign-volunteer force in the Germany was the Division "Azul."

Latvians, Estonians, and Lithuanians also fought for the Germany, which promised these countries independence, However, the majority of those that chose to serve in the German army enlisted as a result of anti-communist resolve rather than a pro-Nazism.

Numerous other volunteers joined the German War Machine and became German elite units . . . "Wiking," "Legion," "Azul" . . .

However, let us not forget that more people of these nationalities died fighting against Germany than for it.

Please do not respond unless you have constructive contributions.

Thanxs!

Wiking is the only prominent Waffen SS divisions that didn't commit any warcrimes (at least I don't know of them). It was half German, half from Nordic volunteers. The Azul division or 250th Infanteriedivision was a good unit and proved themselves capable.

It doesn't take rocket science to figure out why the Baltic people fought with Germany, for them Germany was far better than the USSR.

By the way, there was a huge Russian shadow army, the ROA that should have fought for Germany, I think it had over 1 million men. After they betrayed the Soviets, they in turn betrayed Germany when things looked bleak. Also known as the Vlasow-army.

500.000 flemish boys (all SS) fought against the boljewici (sp?) not because of their ideology for the nazi's but more to fight back the communists.

at the end a flemish and a german/dutch/scandinavian aren't that different in mentalilty.

Don't try this at home lads

So the oppressed people of the Soviet Union joined the Germans, that's normal...
