Saw another documentary on the Battle of Agincourt. Was very revealing in that the weather and mud were more responsible for the defeat of the French than the British archers were. They actually demonstrated how the British arrows wouldn not penetrate French armor.
They also showed how French knights (the ones on foot) were thrown into turmoil by advancing in very sticky mud which scattered their whole formations. The English Archers, who constituted 90% of the English force, wore cloth shoes and could move about in the mud much easier. The archers grabbed battle hammers, short swords, maces and knives and caused havoc in the mud-stuck French knights.
Finally, the English executed several hundred (perhaps thousands) of French POW's. One of history's not well publicised war crimes.
Thats a bad execution for the time. But that doesnt comapre to the heaps of dead to this day and even before. Thats just a small number really in comaprison to huge atrocities..The Bombing of Dresden which people say 25 K-500 K. The holocaust etc etc. Really bad things happened in war back then. Of course we all know the deal with boiling oil correct?
Rob, the whole antique administrative center downtown is still black from the firestorms. They've rebuilt a Cathedral with white stone, but they used some of the old blackened stones from the original Cathedral in spots. It's sobering.
