Best Post-WW2 SMG

July 20 2005, 9:54 PM

Okay, in the words of Ringo when he "appeared" on The Simpsons, "I apologize for my late response", but my pick:

The HK-53. OK, so it's VERY arguable as to whether it's actually a SMG due to the .223 rifle cartridge, but it packs much more punch than the MP-5.

I understand HK no longer markets it, displacing it in favour of the chopped G-36. I guess that's "streamlining" their line up:

If you're going to be a stickler and insist that a SMG must have a pistol round, then I'll opt for the LaFrance M-16K in .45 calibre:

The Sten 9mm SMG. Been around by a long long time..

Other than that My new Fav is the TAVOR TAR21/2 SMG... It can take both 5.62mm and 9mm Magazines . The Change is achieved by flicking a Switch.. The Micro Tar as it is called is all set to be the Indian Forces new SMG

In terms of outright performance, the Mp5, but as a good reliable field weapon the Uzi is also a good choice. Being seen as a gangster gun has tarnished it's reputation but it is a very good close-quarters weapon.

Here is my Post WWII Era Favourity

Sterling L2A1 - L2A3, L34A1 (Great Britain)

Remained in Various Upgraded Form With the British Forces till the Early/Mid 90s

The Sterling SMG deserved wery high reputation along the troops due to extreme reliability and good accuracy.

A sub machine gun needs to look and feel "right". The UZI does, the MP5 does, the Baretta does. The Sterling just doesn't to me, sorry. If it's awkward to hold and aim, how effective can it be? A key feature of a sub-machine gun is the way it cradles in your arms, ready to use. WW2's Thompson was like that. It just felt right and ready! I like the Russian Kubris as well, it looks effective. Some of those really "modern" looking pieces just look awkward to handle to me.

Well The Sterling was very popular with the Forces in NI. though an old design it was very accurate and extremely reliable. Almost never prone to jamming. It was only retired from service in the mid 90s from the British Army. Hell even the SAS used it for a period of time.. So there must be something to it

Plus i have personally fired a Silenced Sterling . It didnt dissapoint.

I have to admit I like that mini-M16. Must be expensive as hell though with a forged aluminum receiver.

The Commandos choice: MP5 series is the best. In service with anything that may be called serious Special Forces.
