Penal settlements in Australia

Just wondering what people knew about the first penal colonies in Australia and when they really started to grow.

When was the first one set up and how many people were sent there, when were the periods of increasing growth, what was the treatment like?

When did penal colonies get stopped and actual migration start to occur? What percentage of the population comes from the original transportees?

Stuff like that? Its quite interesting as ive been having a discussion with work colleagues about the initial development of Australia after its 'discovery'.
