HISTORY: BOOK ON REPRESSION OF ALBANIAN MINORITY IN CALABRIA
(ANSAmed) - CASTROVILLARI (COSENZA), MARCH 13 - A forgotten story, that of the political trials held in Campotenese (Cosenza) between 1848 and 1850 against the Albanian community (Arbereshe) of Calabria, is the theme of the book by Giuseppe Carlo Siciliano named 'People's Utopia of the Republic - the Arbereshe and the Great Criminal Court', which was presented in Castrovillari (Cosenza). The book is published by Falco. There were some 15,000 armed Arbereshe near the Campotenese pass, who together with the Calabrians were surrounded by 300,000 Bourbon soldiers. Many were captured, tried and murdered. The idea to present the story in Castrovillari was justified with the fact that it was a theatre of battles, considering the strong presence of Bourbon soldiers. A new series of studies, devoted to the linguistic minorities, was opened by Falco with the publishing of Sicilianòs book. The work was published under the patronage of the Cosenza Provincés council for linguistic minorities, the mountainous Italo-Arbereshe municipality of Pollino and the Italian League of Albanian Minorities. The initiative proves the recognition of the Albanian minority's role in the historic events, which helped the unity of Italy. Currently, more than 75,000 Arbereshe live in the province of Cosenza.
