Lachit Barphukan

January 31 2008, 2:04 PM

"My uncle is not greater than my country"
During the preparations for the Battle of Saraighat he ordered an earthen wall to be constructed within one night and employed his maternal uncle as the supervisor. Late night when Lachit came for inspection, he found that work was not progressing satisfactorily. When asked for an explanation, uncle tried to cite tiredness, to which Lachit became so furious in this negligence of duty that he beheaded his uncle on the spot, saying "My uncle is not greater than my country"("Desotkoi Momai Dangor Nohoi" in Assamese). The barrier was completed within that night. This episode is still cited in Assam as the ultimate example of Lachit's sincerity and patriotism.

Srimanta Sankardev

January 31 2008, 2:11 PM

Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva (1449-1568) (pronounced Mohapurux Srimonto Xonkardev, in Assamese), saint-scholar, playwright, social-religious reformer, is a colossal figure in the cultural and religious history of Assam, India. He is credited with providing a thread of unity to Assam straddling two major kingdoms (Ahom and Koch kingdoms), building on past literary activities to provide the bedrock of Assamese culture, and creating a religion that gave shape to a set of new values and social synthesis. The religion he started, Mahapuruxiya Dharma, was part of the Bhakti movement then raging in India, and he inspired bhakti in Assam just as Ramananda, Kabir, Basava and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu inspired it elsewhere.

Kanaklata Barua

January 31 2008, 2:15 PM

20th September of 1942 is also a red letter day in the history of 'Quit India Movement'. Like in many other places of Assam, preparation for successful implementation of the programme was also at Barangabari under Gohpur Police Satiation in the district of Darrang ( at present Sonitpur). The preparation was made by the people of three Mauzas - Kallangpur, Helem and Brahmajan under the leadership of local leaders like Jonaram Bhuyan, Jiten Borah, Lakhi Kanta Bora, Giridhar Barua, Karneswar Hazarika and Mukunda Kakaty. These leaders inspired the local people with the slogan of Gandhiji 'Do or Die'.

The Assamese have always been underepresented in Indian History, despite the fact that it has produced such great warriors.

FN, when did the Assamese stop speaking the Ahom-Tai language and start speaking modern Assamese? Ahom-Tai was a Sino-Tibetan language whereas modern Assamese is Indo-Aryan and similar to Bengali.

Also, did the Shan of Upper Burma ever control what is today NE India?

@ Darada Raja.

To ur first question, i am afraid i cannot give a proper n accurate answer. Even i am not sure when the modern Assamese language developed. There may be many factors to this, maybe during the cultural renaissance of Assam durin Sankardev's time, maybe during the time of Assam's exposure to other parts of India, maybe post Burmese invasion in British ruled Assam. I will try to find out.

But it is important to note that the so called Ahom language may not be indigenous at all, the Ahoms were not native to Assam though they did contribute a lot to Assam n became Assamese. They came originally from Thailand.

I will make a proper research on it n post it soon.

To ur second question, no those bastard Burmese never occupied whole N-E. N-E as an entity didnt exist till 1950. It was just Kamrupa or Assam. The Burmese came via invitation of that treachorous Badan Barphukan who wanted to usurp power.

There was not one invasion but a series of invasions, numbering three. The bastard Burmese wanted to impose a titular head in Assam that will b a puppet in their hands. They were not so much concerned with physical occupation as they were in political control. U must keep in miond that at that point of time, in the early 19th century there was political uncertaininty and a political vaccum that existed. The Burmese given the invitation of Badan Barphukan simply exploited it.

The Burmese invasion ultimately led to the advent of the British into India. Worried and disturbed by the Burmese yolk and the Burmese repurcussion against any form of resistance, Maniram Dewan felt that the British might be the only saviour from Burmese oppression. The British forces expelled the Burmese and Assam was taken over by the British, this was in the treaty of Yandaboo 1826. Though Maniram Dewan's actions in a way annexxed Assam to British India, what he did at that point of time was to free Assam from Burmese oppression. Later Maniram Dewan had to fight against British rule. Also significant in the fight against the British was Piyali Phukan, whoi unlike his father Badan Barphukan was a true patriot n fought n died for Assam.

"when did the Assamese stop speaking the Ahom-Tai language and start speaking modern Assamese?'

Around late 1700s.Tai-Ahom was never the language of the people. It was the language of the Ahom court.Tai-Ahom is to Assam what Persian is to Mughal North India. The Ahoms were never the majority of Assam. At no point of time the Ahoms were more than 15% of Assam's population. But the Ahom's converted to Hinduism and fully got integrated into Assamese Soceity.

"Even i am not sure when the modern Assamese language developed'

Classical Assamese was derived from Magadhi Prakrit along with Bengali and Oriya. It got prominance under the famed Kamarupa Kingdom ! Modern Assamese dialect originated during 1300s under the Khen dynasty of Kamata Kingdom ! The rise of the Kamata Kingdom coincides with the decline of the ancient Kamarupa and beginning of the medeival period !

P.S.The assamese were one of the few people who were never a vassal of other people or never been colonised until the Ninteenth Century !
