regrouting

I have a shower floor with 20 sq ft. - 2" square porcelain tile. The entire floor needs to be regrouted. We just bought the Fein last night so we don't have any idea how long it will take to cut out the old grout because we don't know of it's efficiency. Even at $10.00 sq ft $200.00 just doesn't seem enough. We want to go hrly. Any ideas how long it would take?

Thanks, Josi

LOL...

Ahh yes, the old floor tile problem.

This is my arch nemisis... Just be glad they aren't 1 inchers...

You're right to want to go hourly....but consider these facts...

why are you regrouting in the first place? Dirty?Cracked grout?

Also, if there's a shower pan failure and the water isn't draining right the floor may always stay dark/wet in certain places.

I don't know about you but I generally steer away from these things pretty bad.

If you do it, let me know how it goes

We regrout a lot of shower floors when necessary. Charge $250 for 2" tile floor for a standard shower. $175 for 4" or larger. With the Fien it is not too bad. When the floor is sanded grout and the grout is ok we clean and stain.

Ted-
Did I read that right that you are color staining shower floors? What are you using?

Regrouting

I know I charge any where from $190.00 to $225.00 for regrouting shower floors. If you talking the entire shower--then you are looking at any where from $500.00 to $650.00. Regrouting is not easy---please let your customers know that.

We clean and stain shower floors when the floors are sanded grout. We use IAF stains and floors come out great. We don't stain unsanded grout. If the floor is bad we regrout.

Ted and Derek, if I read you right you offer regrouting of shower floors with sanded grout. I've been chicken to do so, but have tried a time or two.

Which tool? I use Fein, but open to new ideas.

And when do you call it deep enough to regrout? I could drive myself nuts always thinking "It could be just a bit deeper...." while 4 more hours pass.

Elbow grease

February 10 2006, 6:55 PM

Man use a good grout saw and some elbow grease. I saw about about two-thirds and grout the floor. I'm kinda old school man, I depend on my hands and elbow grease. When I first started it was just cleaning, color staining, and sealing. Now, shower jobs have picked up for me--------sometimes I get combo jobs where the customer wants me to restore their shower and floor.

I mostly do preventative maintenance work on showers--caulking, regrouting and steam cleaning. On average--I walk out the door with $315.00 on a shower job that takes me 2 hr and 15 min to complete. I don't do shower rebuilds or pan replacements--just preventative maintenance. The worst the shower looks--the higher the price.
