The Ministry of Defence is to consider giving British soldiers basic equipment such as clothes that fit and boots that don't melt in the summer, it announced today. Dear May,
Rise of Nations is an excellent game (so much so that I often abandoned personal higene, grooming, and such as I played it ).
As for turn-based strategies, Gary Grigsby's "World at War" is the best IMO. You should look into it.
"We will write our own military manuals, which the Americans, British, and French can study in their staff colleges."
-Colonel Behrouz Soleimani, Deputy Commander of the Iranian 21st Infantry Division, following the Liberation of Khorramshahr
"The baseless claim made us laugh. We do not use laptops to keep our classified documents."
-Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi, on American claims that an Iranian laptop they had captured contained evidence that Iran was producing a nuclear warhead
I love RTS games, have both Battle for Middle Earth 1&2. BFME2 is lots of fun online, specially if you are into LOTR or a fan of the movies. If you are deciding between any of the middle earth games just get the new BFME2, it's got most of the same from the original plus lots of extras. They now have the license to all the Tolkien characters (before it was only what was in the movies), so you get characters like Tom Bombadil. Also you can use Sauron in this one and not in BFME1....that guy kicks ass! What else, more races than the first one too. First one had Gondor, Rohan, Mordor & Isengard, part 2 has Men, Elves, Dwarves, Goblins, Mordor & Isengard. You should probably download the demo and try it out to get the feel. You can only use goblins and dwarves but you'll get the idea.
However, my favorite RTS has to be Warcraft 3. It is pretty old now, but it is lots of fun. The battles are on a more smaller scale and you have to use more tactics than BFME. They sell the Battle Chest that comes with Warcraft 3 + the expansion. $40
I will also mention my favorite when it comes to RTS based on real units, Empire Earth. It is old now, the graphics suck compared to anything out today, but I love this game (even more than Empire Earth 2). There are several different eras that you can play as (i.e. stone age, medievil, ww2, modern, future, etc). You can even play a game starting cave men going all the way to mech warriors but I usually just stick to WW2 and pretend I'm Patton racing my tanks across Europe lol. The maps are HUGE and you really get the feeling of controlling large armies, truly an epic game. They sell this now for about $20
was primarily looking at I purely due to performance
this pc is a bit long in the tooth (xp3200, 1gb ram, 9800 pro card)
so i was concerned about running it.
About time i updated the machine i guess.

Dear May,
If that is so, then I think Rise of Nations is the perfect choice. Still uses classic RTS graphics (as opposed to full 3D) and can run on virtually any system which is not utterly obsolete.
Have you played "Age of Empires?" If you liked that, you will like Rise of Nations. Similar, but evolved.

I own Rome , good game , nice Mods for it , it's turn based (on Campaign map) but the battles are very nice I might add , just try the demo. It'll go into the campaign map a bit as well as the battles.
what settings can you run bfme2 on? I have a amd64 3400/1gb ram/radeon 9600 and running anything higher than "low" the responsiveness wasn't that good. Still playable, but kinda felt like there was "lag" on a single player game.....hehe, I used it as an excuse to upgrade to a nvidia 6800 gs and play the game in all its ultra high detail glory :P it is a HUGE difference in visual quality...but the game play is still the same of course
psing: medium, but i think 9800 pro a fair bit better than 9600
when i bought that card.. around 40 years ago ;p it was the best
going.

I'm still using a couple of 19" Mitsubishi CRTs, was never very impressed with the TFTs I've used, but a friend got a 24" Dell TFT which is awesome! Amazingly bright, crystal clear, very responsive and has a nice native res of 1920x1200...I'm looking at the new 30" version just to go one better than him. lol
>>30' however..just sick lol<<
No, TWO 30inch screen is sick.
It must be like being at Wimbledon. lol

yes there is a story, but I haven't played it yet. I just played online skirmish matches. I believe the story is the "war in the north" both good and evil campaigns. there is a also something called "war of the ring" mode which is supposed to be like Risk or something.
my tip is elves are too damn strong lol their archers kick ass. the goblins are pretty good too though cause they are really cheap. you can just continually make the litte buggers and not care about upgrading them. i've often been rushed by goblin players who first just make little spiders. they are so fast that they come and start destroying my farms and they run away before i can get them.

unfortunatly a friend lent me a copy of 'worlds of warcraft'
with a ten day guest account.
Worried: never really even tried this stuff
but feel the potential for stealing my life
and nerdy-fying me for ever lol.

"The builders of this empire were not worthy of such an army. Two centuries of persecution could not wear out its patience; two centuries of thankless toil could not abate its ardour; two centuries of conquest could not awaken its insolence. Dutiful to its masters, merciful to its enemies, it clung steadfastly to its old, simple ideas - obedience, service, sacrifice."
