Some of them are a little too excited about it though, fex...

PCGamer has given Oblivion a whopping 95% and an editor's choice in their review. This is one game that EVERYBODY needs to get, even those that aren't a fan of role-playing games.
I loved Morrowind (I'm not even an RPG fan), so I'll probably be picking up Oblivion next week; problem is that my system's fairly weak:
Athlon 2500+
512Mb DDR 400
256Mb 6600TD
I'm not planning on playing anywhere near 1600, most likely 1024*768 on Medium. I'm wondering if anybody has a similar config and if Oblivion is running right?
I'm downloading it right now, but its going to take a couple of days at my speed, its 4,3 GB.
Quote:GamespotThe Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is simply one of the best role-playing games ever made.
The Good: Huge, lavishly detailed world offers tremendous amount of action and adventure; main mechanics like combat, stealth, and magic are fun and well designed; impressive artificial intelligence and hundreds of believable characters; outstanding symphonic score, as well as excellent voice acting and sound effects; tremendous replay value, plus gorgeous graphics to make it easy on the eyes.
The Bad: Frequent though fairly brief loading times; you might run into some technical issues with performance.
Gab, a guy I know has a Radeon 9800Pro which is in the same category as the 6600TD, and runs it fine at 1024X768 and all medium settings, and adds that it still looks STUNNING. He does have 2Gigs of RAM to back it up though, I would think the game would run sorta choppy with 512MB, you don't need 2Gigs, but having 1Gig is a must IMO if you want a smooth playing experience.
Thanks Mantis, it looks like I'll be picking up an Asus Athlon64 K-8N with a 3000+ tomorrow.
It seems my old 2500+ has a problem as it doesn't seem to want to go over 1.1 GHz; it just crashes when I try to set the CPU frequecies over 100Mhz, an IT friend of mine says it's unrepairable. The K-8N/3000+ is the cheapest option I could find at 250$, Intel is out of the qustion as suppliers here have run out of AGP capable mobos.
I hope it's a definite improvement over my older system.
Well this is my first post running the Athlon64/3000+, I played Oblivion for an hour last night(just to get through the sewers and dungeons in the beginning); the settings were mostly medium, with 2x AA and bloom enabled at 1024........it was smooth as silk, I was really surprised.
Anyway, once I get a bit of cash I'm going for a new PS and an extra 512MB Ram.
I seem to be having a problem, after that first night where I played a whole hour+ without a hitch I'm getting a problem; the screen goes into standby mode and the CPU idles whenever I load up my last save. Is it a sign that I need more RAM?
I'm playing "Star Wars Empire at War" without a hitch for hours on end, never had the problem once.
I'm really not a fan of roleplaying games, and I really can't comprehend the continuing fascination of these games like Oblivion and WoW.
The only game that fits in this category that had me addicted was Diablo 2.
IMO they should rather develop a proper new space combat sim in the style of Freespace 2. It has long been overdue. I guess that the market just isn't there though...
Well I got to play a few hours more, upto the point where u fnd the lost son of the king (with a few dungeon quests inbetween) and start to clean out the city of deadra without a hitch, but eventually the problem came back. A friend of mine suggested it could be a VGA driver issue, I'm running on Nvidia's 77.77.
Well, I downloaded 84.12 from Nvidia's website, took me 2 hours on my friggin' dial-up; the game stopped going into standby and idling the HD, now it just gives me a "send/don't send" message in Windows instead, a definite improvement if you ask me.
It's become considerably more playable now as it happens less often.
