I'm not shelling out a ridiculous $700CDN for a console.
Besides, the launch line-up for the PS3 is crap, all the more reason to get it later than now. I'd rather be playing Zelda:Twilight Princess during the holidays.
I seriously can't imagine playing with a Wii though, think of tennis games, fighters etc...you'll actually literally be beating your opponent in the same room.
It's inevitable that consoles will sooner or later be forgotten altogether simply because the idea of a "game console" belongs to an era when the personal computers weren't so ubiquitous. PC is naturally the ultimate solution of the future.
But, if I have to choose one of those presented, I'll go with PS3.

Consoles are just as hardcore as pc's. You can get a 360 for 300 now. Plenty of hardcore games....imagine the games and visuals on ps3 and 360 in 3years time? Great stuff. Look at gears of war for 360.....pretty much the most hardcore game ATM......and nothing even comes close to it in terms of visuals. Anyway I will wait a little for my ps3....resistance i cool...but nothing special other than that at the moment....besides it costs too much. I much rather give that money for a dedicated hd-dvd player.
There's something about a console where it is more ick up and play and switch it off when you like. When you're drawn in by a PC game you never see light of day.
Consoles are definitely not as hardcore. First of all, you don't have to spend $1,000+ on a new PC or upgrades to keep up. Also, PC offers unlimited user customization... from controls (the keyboard has 108 keys, the control pad has 4) to additional content (user created or downloaded mods and various skins/patches). Also the PC is the largest platform for a NASTY breed of games called MMORPGs, the PS2 online may have FFXI, but it's not quite the same as games like Everquest or WoW on PC.
Gears of War is hardcore? lol... to hardcore PC flight sim/combat flight sim enthusiasts, that will sound like the joke of the century. Falcon 4.0 has a 600 page manual, it takes YEARS of full-time devotion to get good at it.
Those flight sims aint hardcore you know.....using a 600 pages manual means its very technical...nothing else. Why should I upgrade my pc when I can buy a 360 and play gears of war with far better graphics than what pc has today? Consoles are for games....not emails and page browsing. Why is Gears of war not harcore? Its game of the year for sure......you have a kickass game with intense action.....and the best visuals ever. Pure entertainment.
What does any of that have to do with being "hardcore"? All you're saying just solidifies my argument that consoles are "casual" and more easily picked up by the general gaming audience.
A highly complex user interface and control scheme requiring the full use of the keyboard with a huge learning curve involving years of playing experience and user-installed custom modifications, no casual gamer has the time nor the patience to play games like that, and that's what defines "hardcore" limited-audience games. And it only exists on the PC.
Well my friend.......in my eyes that isnt harcore. Dont get me wrong I play alot of pc games. But for me consoles are just as hardcore when it comes to games. For me to be playing a game for years just to get good at it is just insane.....thats not a game. Yes casuals play consoles.....but at the same time they play pc games too. I guess we have our diffrences when it comes to hardcore....even though pc's are more open.
Quote:Why should I upgrade my pc when I can buy a 360 and play gears of war with far better graphics than what pc has today?
I saw a live play of Gears of War at Arcadia on Saturday in Montreal (along with the Wii, which I found more "interesting"), and frankly it does not have "far better graphics" than what a decent 6800 GT can handle.

Then you should check the game out on my system. Or better yet read the reviews.....it truely is the best when it comes to visuals. Im playing it on Pioneer's 7th generation plasma with monster component cables......it looks far far better that what pc has today. And this is coming from a person with a 1900xt card.
What me and Pax meant by hardcore is that it's not easily approached by the average gamer, which you yourself in part agreed to be the truth when you cited the expensive nature of PC hardware which is beyond what most casual gamers can afford. I think you're taking the word in a different context, so basically we're not even talking about the same subject it seems lol.
Actually, one of the fundamental reasons I like PC games better is the ease of performing sophisticated actions and precise moves. The Keyboard + Mouse combo definitely provides the best in-game control. It beats the coolest design joysticks any day. I have a PS2 and pretty much the only game I play with it is my high-school-years addiction Tekken. With PC, on the other hand, I'm always on the bleeding edge of gaming. Plus, when the slightest visual detail counts, like in sniper games, looking at a 30" flat-panel computer screen works for me a lot better than looking at a TV screen across the room.

8800GTX x 2 for me :D I have them sitting at home right now, but I'm waiting for my new case to arrive cause they don't fit in my old one, they're mahoosive!
People are right about the comp... I had to pull out $2400 AUS for my comp (about $1800 US) and I much enjoy the CoD 2 on this comp then on the 360. THe 360 is fun for when you have mates over and just want to muck around.
Playing internet console games? That just sounds stupid to me...
Ever since the demise of the Original Playstation and the good old Sega Mega Drive... Consoles just seem like a social event with friends, beer and a day off...
Success is commemorated; Failure merely remembered.
>>Hey Steven, you're not gonna wait for the 80mm chip versions?<<
They are EVGA so I'll likely use the step-up program and swap them when the refresh is out. I want my system ready for christmas as it's the only time I'll get to have a good play with it...I'm hoping the new 30" dell lcd (reason I went SLI) will be available by then also, don't like the current version, changed it for the 24". I've only had a quick play with one of the cards and they are seriously powerful! Oblivion is smoother and with higher IQ than my 1900xt+crossfire setup!
Psingh.......when you get your ps3 report back ok mate.
Steven......2x 880GTX wow. Thats alot of power....a shame you wont harness all that power though. Not even with Crysis. But still alot of power you got there. Congrats.
I preordered mine so no I did not have to camp out, but considering my friend just sold his for $5000 on ebay.....I would have camped out for more if I had a chance to get one but people started lining up since Wednesday and I have a job so I just got the one.
I picked it up this morning, it is the 60GB version. You NEED to get an HDMI cable cause the crap cable it comes with makes the games look worse than the old Xbox. The only two games I have now are NBA 2k7 and Madden 2007, both of which I also have on 360. Very little difference in the games other than no rumble. 2k7 has some improved player models (only really noticed on some players though) and the free throw shooting is cool with the motion capture controller.
The built in browser seemed to work fine, but it was a little hard to read some of the text on sites. I plugged in a usb keyboard and was able to type in url's easier. The system itself is very quiet, very heavy and also very hot. I haven't had much time to play around with it yet, I only opened it today to "play test it" before I flew back home for thanksgiving tomorrow. I'll be able to really give it a review when I come back in a week.
He put it as a buy it now, it "sold"...I don't know if he has received the money yet or not. In any case, some friends came over to play 2k7 and we found a bug lol For some reason the crowd noise kept going away when I had the ball (I was the away team). You could only hear distinct voices in the crowd saying things but otherwise it sounded like an empty gym. Then when the other guy got the ball the crowd noise came back.

I'll get into this.I will go for the Ps3 but the computer is still the king for gaming.
But when it's say the holidays and you have your family over or some friends over any time.It is just easier to turn on the switch to your tv get some snacks and beer sit on the couch or chairs and just relax and play on the console. Were the PC is more you stay on it for hours at a time and do not eat for really hardcore gamers.
The console is more social when you have friends or family over and great all around.Where the PC is more for realistic and internet gameing with players from all around the world.
>>Steven......2x 880GTX wow. Thats alot of power....a shame you wont harness all that power though.<<
Read my previous post, I'm going for one of the new 30" Dell LCDs when they come out, so SLI is essential for 2560x1600 with high IQ settings.
>>Any idea what that screen is, LCD running at 2560x1600, wonder what is it's response time?<<
I'm intrigued about this to...The only LCD's I know of that are native 2560x1600 are the current and new Dell 30", the new HP 30", the soon to be released Samsung 30" and the old apple 30" but the screen show doesn't look like any of those, though it has a little resemblance to the Apple...
-edit- Actually I think it is the Apple....It just looked darker than I remember it! I don't know if it's a newer model because out of all of them the Apple is the most expensive with the worst spec.

Steven..........dont get me wrong....thats a good way to take advantage of those cards. What I meant is they are so powerful that you wont ever harness them to the max. If you had bought 2x 1900xtx you would have hit the same peak level. The apple monitors should be very good too...as with the high-end DELL ones. You can use the DELL for everything....you can even buy a console and use component/vga or hdmi to play on it. I would have bought the DELL if I didnt own a high-end plasma though.
Psingh.....yeah its a great game. Do you remember the first night time while it was raining? Visuals to die for.

I'm coming from an x1900xt crossfire setup and let me tell you without hyperbole these cards will blow it away! Seriously, In many games I'm getting BETTER performance from a single 8800GTX than with my crossfire setup!! I can't wait to see what SLI can do but my new case and PSU still haven't arrived. About the Dell...Unfortunately if it is like the old one it doesn't have the range of inputs found on the 24" 2405(I've owned both the 2405 and 3007 but didn't get on with them!) and newer 2407(that I'm using now), it only has a single DVI input. I have to admit though after playing around with a single card I'm starting to have second thoughts about keeping the second one as currently it's not needed for playing @ 1920x1200, something I never expected! So I may send it back and wait until after Christmas to get a larger LCD and second card.
Neo, it may be overkill now, but when Crysis is released, it'll be hungry for every last ounce of performance your video cards can muster, and Steven will be the only one of us playing it in 1600X1200+ and full AA/AF glory. Which 8800GTX card did you get by the way Steve? 512 or 768MB?
On a little side note, I just picked up my Nintendo Wii this morning with the help of a little miracle. I was naive enough to think that getting to the lineup 3 hours before the store opened would get me a system. I got there to find people camped out overnight, not a huge lineup but not small either, especially with rumors swirling about that Wii stocks were going to be precious few. Waited out in the freezing cold for 2 hours before the manager came out and announced they only had 33 systems in stock and started handing out numbered tickets for them. I looked at the lineup and thought I was f-cked, obviously I'd come too late and there were too many people ahead of me, or at least I thought. I hadn't even expected it, but the manager had somehow made it all the way down to the back of the line where I was, and handed me the very LAST TICKET. Number 33, my new lucky number. Now it's just gonna be me, my Wii, and my copy of Zelda for the next couple of weeks.
Didn't know there is 512MB GTX? I went for the 768MB EVGA 8800GTX's. Some people have said these cards are not worth getting because they are DX10 and there are no DX10 games out yet but what some people fail to understand (not talking about anyone here!) is that they blow all other current cards away in DX9, I've never had a jump in performance like it, it's certainly more than the x800 series were!

The problem with new pc cards is that you will never harness every ounce of power from them. You think crysis is gonna tap all that power from your SLI? nope....even with crysis you still got alot to tap. But the developers never do that. It only happens with consoles. Yes 8800 is more powerful that xenos (360) and rsx (ps3)....but it dosent mean its as efficient. Look at gears of war...its only using one of the cores of 360...thers 2more cores left. Altough my 1900xt could handle GOW, you will never see visuals like that for the pc today. So why should I opt for a crossfire 1900xt? Its a far better deal to wait and see what the future brings AND when the prices are down a bit. I will most certainly get the new ati R600 ( based on 360).
Congrats on the Wii Mantis...I just saw a video review of Zelda...it looks great. How do you like the controls?
I got a Wii too this morning lol :D But couldn't find Zelda Every store had it reserved. I will try again tomorrow. I tried to buy Mario 64 but I need the classic controller to play it. I will make a trip to the store and see what I can do, in the mean time I am playing the Wii sports which is really fun. I imagine it would be a great party game.
I won a Wii today at circuitcity, anybody want to buy it for 380 cash? I live in monterey area. If i dont sell it ill take it back, i won it from employee tournament at circuitcity ill take it back if it dont sell in 10 days.
Wii's, while being currently sold out will not be hard to find. If I were you I'd keep it or sell it for the $250 you can get it at the store (or maybe $225). You never know though, someone might be willing to pay $380 for it
i spent $3000 for a new desktop with crossfire 1900 dual graphics card, 800mhz 4 meg ram, 10000rpm hd etc still flight simulator x sucks..i am gonna throw my pc and bash my head to a wall...
$400 consoles are still performing much better in games..
BTW - xbox360 and wii is a better combination rahter than going for a ps3. We all now sony live nw sucks..
Think i might get a 360 and then a PS2 when Final Fantasy XIII comes out in a couple of years, by which time Sony will realise theyre losing the console war and have to drop the price...yup, got it all figured out!
both microsoft and sony lose money on the consoles. they make up for it on license fees for the games that sell. as a whole i believe microsoft has not even made a profit on games licenses of the original xbox.
One thing; I know everyone is moaning about the price of the PS3 but surely when you take into consideration that the HDTV addon for the 360 will bump overall price up to comparative prices of the PS3, what's the fuss about?
yes i'm no tech-wiz, but blu-ray like betamax is looking to be another case of superior technology losing out to lower costs. deja-vu all over again.
poor Sony... Nintendo on the other hand is seeing green everywhere. So far, they've sold three times the number of consoles than Sony and they're actually making a PROFIT on every Wii sold.
The war between the two formats will begin once pionner and sony blueray players are out. The codec used in the samsung ones are ****ty. Give it time. Too early to tell.
Well on top of that the Wii had 4 million ready to go on the day, only a fourth went out and which is why they'res still people lining up on shipment dates, meanwhile I believe the ps3 only had something like 400 K , too soon to call, but can anyone clarify what Blu Ray is, and all these other things?
I on top of that heard that it's not doing your system justice without going for an HDTV aswell, along with 60$ games coming out and a 600$ system, its kinda hard to choose. I havent the thought of buying one yet to be honest, sorta waiting for things to settle down and clearly be able to pick one, and I've been leaning with the 360 do to online support, which is essential even the Wii has it now, and the 360 also has experience with it...
Tim.....blueray and hd-dvd are the new formats. Blueray can hold more storage space while hd-dvd has the better codec atm. They were both born with 1080p ( 1920x1080 ). You shouldnt play with these two if you dont have a HIDEF tv. Hd-dvd is better atm when it comes to pure PQ....and is leading too. But I can asure you once the pioneer blueray is out it will have better PQ. But hey they need to bring the price down. Hd-dvd id much cheaper...more movies available....better PQ atm.
Get a PS3. It's the best console available, with the best games. You'll also be set with Blu-Ray when it (hopefully) replaces HD-DVD. Sony is banking on the fact that HD TV's are getting cheaper, and people will want the better quality picture you get with BR. Blu-Ray may have a rough start, but it should pick up in time.
