An Arabic-led push is underway to remove Australia from the Asian Football Confederation before the 2010 World Cup, amid fears it will 'kill Asian soccer'.

Speaking at the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, the president of the West Asian Games committee said it was the biggest mistake made in Asian football.

"What are we going to benefit from Australia's soccer team when it plays a game with Asia? Is it the experience?" Sheik Talal al-Fahd Al Sabah told a press conference.

"We might play with them once every four years, not more."

Australia joined the AFC in January after quitting the Oceania Football Confederation in a bid to benefit from wider exposure and tougher matches in the Asian league. The move will also give Australia a chance at direct qualification for World Cups, rather than is previously more circuitous route by having to play the fifth-ranked South American team to qualify.

Australia reached the second round of the World Cup before losing on a last-minute penalty kick to eventual champion Italy.

Sheik Talal predicted there would be no problem removing Australia from the AFC, and said he was against Australia joining the Asian continent in all sport.

"It is natural to be able to change the decision. A general assembly can annul it the way it approved it," he said.

"There are general assemblies that can ask them to leave the way they brought them in."

"I hope this happens before the World Cup qualifications."

Earlier, Sheik Talal's brother, Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahad al-Sabah, president of the Olympic Council of Asia, said Australia's inclusion in the AFC was a bad precedent and should not be extended to Olympic sports.

"If Australia will come to Asia, we are killing about 16 other nations - New Zealand, all those other small countries - will not find a good environment for the development of their sport," Sheik Ahmad said.

Australia is among 16 nations that will take part in the Asian Cup finals in July 2007, while Adelaide United and Sydney FC will play in the Asian Champions League.

These sad Arab states can go eat my left nut. Now because Australia changes the scope of the Asian Cup teams (bringing in one more GOOD team), these Arabs bitch because they will get their asses kicked every four years.

PS: Notice he doesn't bring ONE good arugemnt other then we bring nothing to the Asian Confederation... Except for millions of dollars, a good team and a jersey that doesn't have our name on the front of it...

Success is commemorated; Failure merely remembered.

Australia HAS to stay in the afc. they contribute much to asian football by improving asian football. hahaha the fat sheikh arabs fear the only country getting its way to the wc wonīt make it anymore and that is saudi-arabia. because now there 4 dominating teams and these are australia, japan, south korea and iran.

itīs the same issue with the asian footballer of the year. no korean, japanese, australian or iranian was nominated. all were some strange arab players no-one knew. under the leadership of these sheikhs asian football will never flourish.

in two days iranīs u 23 will play against qatarīs one in the asian games and i bet the referees are bought.

i hope that our team defends the title because it would be third time to win the asian games. in 2002 and 1998 we won too.

our team is led by a brazilian coach. if he does his job good heīs welcome to coach our rean national team.

Who the fvck won the asian player of the year? It was some random black dude from Qatar who I've never seen. They also made ban in saying only players playiing in Asia could be nominated. IMHO Everton's Tim Cahill should have won.

Regarding the Asian games, are the teams the same as the Olympic squads? I also heard that Iraq is in the quaterfinals!

This is just thinly veiled racism on the part of the Arab countries who will lose a spot at future World Cup's and Asian Cups to Australia. It was expected, but fortunetely Bin Hamman is their daddy and as long as he supports Australia's newly found Asian status nothing will change.
