Dennis Bergkamp

It may not be correct in some way to choose a compatriot, but for me Dennis Bergkamp is the finest player I've ever seen. There have been plenty of players around that have scored more or won more cups. Even in the Netherlands, Bergkamp will rank behind other greats like Johan Cruijff and Marco van Basten. Nevertheless, if I'd ever dream to have become a professional footballer, I would have wished for his skills and nobody else's.

Quote:
"In Brilliant Orange (ISBN 0-7475-5310-6), David Winner's analysis of the way in which Dutch football and Dutch culture blend, the sculptor Jeroen Henneman analyzes the effect of Dennis Bergkamp's passes and how he can split a defence: "It's a miracle. One moment the pitch is crowded and narrow. Suddenly it is huge and wide."

Bergkamp's close control and skill in passing the ball has put him in very high regard by Arsenal's fans, who have given him the nickname "God". Other nicknames given to him by fans included "Dennis the Menace", "the Dutch Master", "Iceman", "Bergy" and "Beavis".

Arsène Wenger also said about him after Arsenal's 3-1 win over West Bromwich Albion (April 16, 2006) that Bergkamp had:

"Intelligence and class. Class is of course, most of the time linked to what you can do with the ball, but the intelligence makes you use the technique in an efficient way. It's like somebody who has a big vocabulary but he doesn't say intelligent words, and somebody who has a big vocabulary but he can talk intelligently, and that's what Dennis is all about. What he does, there's always a head and always a brain. And his technique allows him to do what he sees, and what he decides to do."[4]
In April 2006, Simon Kuper wrote in the Financial Times:

"One night last year some legends of Dutch football gathered for dinner in an Amsterdam house. Around midnight conversation turned to an old question: who was the best Dutch footballer ever? Dutchmen have been voted European Footballer of the Year seven times, more than any other nationality except Germans. Yet Jan Mulder, a great centre-forward turned writer, chose a player who had never even threatened to win the award nor, at the time, a Champions League: 'Bergkamp. He had the finest technique', said Mulder. Guus Hiddink, the great Dutch manager, nodded, and so the matter was settled."

I don't know how to post those video images, so I'll just post a link to it. Everyone who loves football will enjoy this. It's magic.

@Finlandia

Now I think of it, you also could have introduced Jari Litmanen. He has been one of my favourite players and he's from your country!

"Zbigniew Boniek, Maradonna and Franz Beckenbauer."

Zbigniew Boniek: Dont know the guy..

Maradona: Drug addict and a cheater. Claiming he scored with "the hand of god" is NOT cool!

Franz Beckenbauer: One of the most arrogant a$$holes I can think of...

I myself introduce Michael Laudrup.. Calm, friendly, and simply brilliant!

@Finlandia

Must be my Nordic mentality. I simply despise the likes of Maradona and Beckenbauer.. They were world class players, but I don't like their personality.

About Boniek, when in repeat the name a million times, it seems familiar... Maybe I should do a little google on him.

@ Lau

Boniek played for Juventus back in the 1980's as a striker, easily one of the best to have been in that position.

Maradonna at least hasen't sold out like Pele. Pele is the poster child for sell outs, money hungry and glory hungry. Maradonna doesn't care what you think of him... Good on him. He was easily one of if not the best player to have been fielded ever!

Beckenbauer was also a joy to watch and being German... that says a lot. He was defiantly the greatest presence for the team, he would be one of those players that lifts the team just being on the field.

Besides we are talking our favourite players, who cares what they are like outside of football? Besides Boniek is one of the nicest people, he is just a total winner on and off the field.

@ Pax

Mate, gone are the days...

Jan Tomaszewski was the best goalie I have ever watched... that game with the English in 1974... pride swells the heart...

There was a awesome video of it on YouTube but it was pulled...

Grzegorz Lato, he was never considered one of the greatest players, but he damn well should, lead a 'Nobody team' to the 1974 World cup, kicking your boys England out lol

Kazimierz Deyna, great marksmen... the best Poland ever had...

Man why can't we have the glory days of Polish football anymore...

They're all a bunch of pre-madonnas mate. None of them are particularly bad. We just don't play as a team. We always whip people in the qualifiers but when it gets to actual competition we just seem to bottle it.

WTF? Are you kidding me? Maradonna was better on the pitch but outside he's been a failure. The reason why he isn't a "poster child" is because fifa and all the football orginizations don't want nor invite him to host or be apart of football. He's a drunken, fat, drug addict. Pele is doing his bit in helping football, aswell as the certain poor communities in his hometown of Santos and all of Brazil. He's been well involved in Brazil's WC 2014 canidacy. Far from a sell out, I've met him and he's an honorable good man. Shame on you!

@ BrazilPride

Pele made ads for Impotency... enough said. He is a sell out. Sell out means anyone that becomes the poster child for a family friendly FIFA while the game becomes more and more bitchy. I hate to say it, but unless they stamp the hell out of diving and bring back the 80's hard men, football will become one big bitch fest. And Pele is at the forefront of supporting this... why? Because he got hacked and can't take it. Football will always be the most loved sport, but it'll hamper further growth if kids are taught from a young age that acting like a girl on the field will reward you with free kicks.

Maradona on the other hand took drugs (like all real South Americans), got hacked and ran straight through everyone. He was the best player on the field and didn't care what FIFA thought of him. FIFA rubs Pele's balls because he loves being a poster child. Shame they banned Maradona... But then again he was always high on Cocaine... what a Argie...

In terms of being an effective football player for the team and lead it to win no one can beat Pele but if you look at football as an art perhaps Maradona is the best throughout history in the catagory of making football an art
