GRONINGEN, Netherlands -- The Netherlands strolled to a comfortable 4-1 win over Serbia to become European Under-21 champions in Groningen.

The Serbs' chances effectively dissolved in a two-minute spell just after the hour mark. They had been putting on pressure after trailing 1-0 at the break but failed to clear Daniel de Ridder's low cross from the right and Ryan Babel, thought to be interesting Arsenal, swept in the Netherlands' second.

Within 60 seconds Babel was chopped down by Aleksandar Kolarov who, having been booked earlier, was promptly sent off.

The Dutch had made a bright start to the final in heavy rain and went in front in the 17th minute, when poor marking allowed Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal time and space to shoot past Damir Kahriman from close range, after a penetrating right wing cross by de Ridder.

The home side wasted other chances before Serbia rattled the woodwork at the other end.

Once they were 2-0 up and facing 10 men the Netherlands assumed command. In the 67th minute Maceo Rigters was put through by Babel and squeezed his shot under Kahriman.

Four minutes later it should have been 4-0, when Babel was chopped down in the area, but his penalty kick was too close to Kahriman's right and the keeper saved.

Serbia made the most of that let off by pulling a goal back 11 minutes from time when Dragan Mrdja headed in, but with three minutes left Luigi Bruins added a fourth for the Dutch from close range.

And for the second time in a row...

The UK should change the footbal rules, at the end of the first 90 minutes a coin gets tossed to decide the game.

I've seen some matches, and I must say it was more enjoyable to watch than most "normal" games. The youngsters have fighting spirit and attack more. The matches are more open.

lol... well, it seems about as fair as a penalty shootout... then again, this particular one was quite thrilling

Netherlands U21 showed what Dutch football can do with a coach calling upon the best players available and then putting them in the right place on the pitch. It's a shame that 'Young Orange' was by far more fun to watch than Marco van Basten's main squad.

The Dutchies played awesome, altough I was surprised how few 'real Dutch' were in the team, I don't want to sound like a rascist inhere because I'm not but the white guys were quite outnumbered imo.

Btw that guy Drenthe rocks

Netherlands? Are you sure it was Netherlands? I thought it was some sort of African team?

This is really gay. In five years whenever any European national team plays an African team the only way to tell them apart will be by their uniforms, or maybe by looking at the keeper. Those are gonna be really exciting games, lol. Many strong emotions will be raised among the fans. The suspense will be extreme: will the blacks in the orange jerseys win, or will the blacks in the blue jerseys emerge victorious? lol. Can't wait.

Onward Chartered Soldiers, on to heathen lands,
Prayer books in your pockets, rifles in your hands.
Take the glorious tidings where trade can be done,
Spread the peaceful gospel --- with a Maxim gun.

Tell the wretched natives, sinful are their hearts,
Turn their heathen temples into spirit marts.
And if to your teaching they will not succumb,
Give them another sermon with the Maxim gun...

When the Ten Commandments they quite understand,
You their Chief must hocus, and annex their land;
And if they misguided call you to account,
Give them another sermon --- with a Maxim from the Mount

So you base someones "dutchness" by the color of their skin? Where does that leave a trye white dutchmen like yourself living in exile?

Keep our sport clean from racism please.

And btw, I believe Royston Drenthe is a bit overrated. So is the whole team. Just given the players, it's quite a miracle this squad won the Championship. I don't see any real valuable players among them for the national selection.

Royston Drenthe joins Real Madrid today for 13 million Euro's! Still I believe he's overrated.
