The Copa America is upon and the past few tournaments I think it has emerged as the most attractive and exciting continental competition. All teams from Comebol are participating plus Mexico and the U.S. If I was a betting man I'd go for Argentina since Brazil doesn't have its strongest side, but that was also the case in Peru 3 years ago and guess who won? lol

Here's a vid of the penalty shootout between Brazil and Argentina, this was the final 3 years ago. Argentina played alot better but Adriano scored a 94th minute goal to level it at 2-2 and take it to Penalties.

In my opinion the UEFA European championship is far more exciting and attractive because of the higher amount of strong football powers but still i agree that the copa america is a great tournament and i think the second best after the european championship.
i also expect that either argentina or brazil to win it. i would´ve included mexico into the contenders too but they sucked big time against the us (and iran ´s b-team sucked against mexico a while back)

Why would it get rigged? As if Uefa is any cleaner of corruption?
The European championships are more hyped up, more money and greater number of quality teams. However in footballing terms the Copa America recently has easily proven alot more exciting. With more goals and greater individual skills.
So far every game has been a surprise this year
Uruguay losing 3-0 against Peru. Venezuela the hosts drawing to Colombia 2-2. Chile made a great comeback to beat Ecuador 3-2! Most importantly Brazil lost to Mexico last night 2-0. Brazilpride's match analysis to follow up shortly, it was truly pathetic lol.

Okay, I'm seriously considering the possibility that perhaps our players were secretly switched and instead of having Brazilian players the Papa New Guinean team took our places. 1st half their was no creativity, no interest it was awful. Castillo was brilliant. BUT, they should thank the Argentine referee for ruling out a perfectly legitimate goal by Diego. He was clearly onside.
2nd half Brazil dominated and should have scored atleast 2 goals. So mexico was fortunate to come with a win, but it was such a **** performance.

unpredictable surprises also occur in the asian cup (which is to start in one week or so) too but still that doesn´t make this tournament more exciting than the european championship. i agree that there are some real great footballing countries in the copa america but this tournament simply can´t be compared to the european championship in terms of excitement, depth and class.
tactically the european championship is simply better and the tournament has overall a real great pace. in my opinion the european championship is even more exciting than the world cup because there are so many equal strong and real strong teams.
i mean brazil didn´t attend this tournament with its strongest squad and this shows how less prestige this tournament has.
the european championship in contrast is always attended with the best squads available.

But thats my point, in terms of class and excitement the Copa America is alot better than the European championships. More goals and better individual skill, the flair in South American football is unrivalled in the rest of the world.
"tactically the european championship is simply better and the tournament has overall a real great pace. in my opinion the european championship is even more exciting than the world cup because there are so many equal strong and real strong teams."
Tactically, thats a nice word for the "experts" but you like to watch good attacking football. Latin teams don't play to defend, so while the defence can come into serious questioning offensively its extremely entertaining.
"i mean brazil didn´t attend this tournament with its strongest squad and this shows how less prestige this tournament has."
Only Kaka and Ronaldinho didn't come, due to serious tiredness. Look at the Argentine team at full strenghth.
"the european championship in contrast is always attended with the best squads available."
The European championship is once every 4 years and his between 2 world cups, as opposed to the Copa America which has followed the world cup.
Again look at the last couple of matches, all very exciting and goal packed.

i agree that latin american football is just sick and i am a big admirer of latin american football but that the point: in europe you witness more diversity, more different playing cultures. defending italians, attacking dutchmen and portugese, well-organized and physically strong germans, technically very skilled frenchmen and so on.

@BrazilPride
I'm going to have to disagree with you there. I don't really think there is any comparison between Copa America and the European Championship.
Hispanic-American teams are not only about "attacking flair" - but what I've seen mostly is a bunch of midfield battles and disorganization. I mean, don't get me wrong - I've seen fantastic games (Ecuador-Chile was great, at least for me), but others, like Argentina-USA, were complete bores. The latter, for instance, was nothing but excessive tackling in the midfield - especially for the first half.
What you see in Europe is more strategy, more technique which brings about better quality games. It's not all about being "goal-packed." Sure, having lots of goals can be amusing and thrilling, but not all the time. I would rather watch a game like France-Brazil from the last World Cup, or maybe an Italy-Germany (best match I've ever seen), which were hardly goal-packed, then watch again a match like Paraguay-Colombia, which finished 5-0.
Goals are nice, but you need strategy as well, not endless midfield battles and charges on goal. That being said, I do like watching Copa America.

I'm playing around dude, but I still wouldn't put UEFA on the same level as CONMEBOL haha
The European championships are more hyped up, more money and greater number of quality teams. However in footballing terms the Copa America recently has easily proven alot more exciting. With more goals and greater individual skills.
Copa America has good games, but come on dude, lets not compare it too Euro. Hell, even Euro 2004 was good (though boring play by Greece ruined it), it's bloody exciting and the sheer quality on quality can't be matched. I mean, only Brazil and Argentina are world class teams in Copa.
Don't get me wrong, I like watching Copa America for it's a fantastic spectacle. But Euro will always be more exciting.
Success is commemorated; Failure merely remembered.

There I can agree with you. European football is more diverse when it comes to styles of play. Problem is when you get to defensive teams playing each other.
"@BrazilPride

To say their isn't really a comparisson implies that the European championship is outta of this world. Which I find extremely overblown. If by no comparison you mean that their styles differ greatly than I can understand your point of view.

U.S - Argentina was a poor game because America was just defending to an attacking Argentine team. They didn't allow Argentina to play their game, in the first half that is. Again Latin American football isn't as orginized as European but its not to the level of disorginization than that of African. The quick passing, one-two's you see is team play at its best. Remember the two best team goals at a world cup were created by two South American teams. (Brazil 1970 and Argentina 2006).
"What you see in Europe is more strategy, more technique which brings about better quality games. It's not all about being "goal-packed." But Brazil France wasn't that exciting of a game. Also if you look at the Paraguay- Colombia match the result was highly unfair to Colombia. They went for goals, their problem was that their defending was appalling. Also strategy translates into how Greece won Euro 2004. Your telling me Greek style of football is exciting?
"I'm playing around dude, but I still wouldn't put UEFA on the same level as CONMEBOL haha"
Dude we've been clean since the the 1978 world cup lol.

Thats what I hate. When people say that only Brazil and Argentina are world class as if theirs a huge gap between other teams. The gap is quite small, watch the South American qualifying results and see how great the gap is. See how Brazil have lost 3-0 to Chile or 3-1 to Bolivia. Heck why is it a general belief in Brazil that qualifying is harder than the world cup itself lol.
"Don't get me wrong, I like watching Copa America for it's a fantastic spectacle. But Euro will always be more exciting."
You have to differentiate hype from the press ect. from the actual football. Greece were not exciting.

To be fair, I did see quite a few US runs on goal. But most of it in my opinion was sloppy battling in the midfield area, not any particular defensive maneuvering by the United States. What disappoints me about South American soccer is that it's too heavily dependent on individual brilliance and guessing. They'll kick the ball around the midfield repeatedly until they see an opening or breakthrough to charge on goal. European soccer is all about strategy and technique to thwart the opponent.
Best team goals are subjective.

I thought Brazil-France was an excellent game, one that showed how strategy and tactics work. Brazil could hardly materialize a single shot on goal, while the French kept the Brazilians under pressure. The only thing I can't comprehend about that match was the goal. How the hell can Roberto Carlos simply stand there when a free kick is about to be taken (that's not a particular attack on Brazilian soccer, but a snipe at RC)? As for the Paraguay-Colombia match, I thought it was a dreadful bore. Yes, Colombia deserved more, but I'm just making an example how a goal-packed match isn't necessarily better quality or better to watch. I can't really comment on Greece, because I wasn't really able to follow the matches on TV, and after the heartbreak on how Italy crashed out of the tournament with one of the best teams, I stopped following it. But honestly, I think that the Greek victory was a fluke - but another example on how more often upsets happen in European soccer.
PS - I'm hoping Uruguay wins it all, despite the atrocious 3-0 defeat to Peru.

Again you don't see the same team play in South America as you do in Europe. In Brazil its called "Toque de bola" where its quick one touch passes at the edge of the box. You see that in South American football which lacks in European. Where you get long passes and crosses. No dribbling no ginga.
"Best team goals are subjective."
Well the most famous in that case.

How is that exciting when one team can't attack? Roberto Carlos never should have been on the team to begin with. I said this months before the world cup he's been sh1t for Real Madrid last 2 seasons. Paraguay- Colombia was great both teams going for goals. Also Greece winning was a fluke but that doesn't prove much about upsets in European soccer. In this Copa America only one match so far as gone as planned.
"PS - I'm hoping Uruguay wins it all, despite the atrocious 3-0 defeat to Peru."
Me too, they were poor against Peru. I also hope the hosts could do a better.

I was working last night and some 20-something year-old comes buy. He notices my name tag and says:
"Hmm, Dario. Are you of Spanish descent, by any chance? I know a couple people name Dario..."
And I replied: "No, actually, I'm Italian."
"Oh really? I'm Argentinian."
So we go off on about how his grandfather, an Italian, recently retired and moved back to Italy from Argentina, and how I had a great great grandfather that briefly immigrated there.... So at the end of it all, I just said:
"So, since you're Argentine, you must be watching Copa America this month, huh?"
He turns around and says:
"OH HELL YEAH!."
I just thought it was hysterical.
Anyways, I think the South American WC qualifiers are just as intense.... Psychotic bastards that you all are.

Brazil 1 Ecuador 0, this is fvcking ridiculous we shouldn't need a penalty to fvcking beat this team. Dunga is a moron who really doesn't know what he's doing, or he's an idiot thats just doing the wrong sh!t.
1. Why doesn't Diego start? He's the fooking playmaker of the squad, were too dependent on Robinho!
2. Why doesn't Elano start? He actually can kick a set piece.
3. Why in every fooking corner do we do the same sh!t? It's predictable a cross to Alex.
4. Can someone explain to me why their are a bunch of changes but Vagner love remains? HE SHOULDN'T EVEN BE ON THE SQUAD! He's not a natural goal scorer and doesn't contribute shyte!
5. We need a goal scorer, try Alfonso he scored 34 goals in the dutch league! Or Fred!

Jesus Christ all the Quarter Final matches have been so one sided.
Venezuela 1 Uruguay 4
Brazil 6 Chile 1
Mexico 6 Paraguay 0
Argentina 4 Peru 0
I'll post the goals of Argentina's game, all 4 goals were brilliant team goals. At the moment I don't see a team in the world that plays as well as Argentina. Their only problem is that when under pressure they do tend to choke. They've been faivorites many times before and have not won.

why is it that the coach has put so few players from the domestic league in the squad? i mean there seem to be even players from eastern european leagues but so few players from the domestic league whereas i always think of the brazilian league to be filled with many and hungry supertalents.
it would be nice if you eloborated on this matter a little more.

Their will always be more players playing abroad in the team than those playing domestically. The issue is that players like Vagner Love, Mineiro are so crap that they don't deserve to be in the squad. Why is it that the best player in the German league doesn't even start?! I don't know to be honest, the coach seems like a complete retard. Now their are plenty of young hungry players with talent, but the coach has experimented with a group of players from the start and he's kept that same group. What he doesn't seem to realize is that this current group is VERY ordinary. We have a good defence but our mid field and attack are VERY VERY weak.
We should have the following, left wing Robinho, two center mid fielders should be Diego and Gilberto Silva and Maicon on the right. Our two strikers should be Afonso whose Europe's top scoring striker and Fred.

I don't know how were going to beat Argentina, its like every goal they score is sooo damn good. Their players are so shart, talented and they play so well as a team. I can't think of a team in the world as attractive to watch. Check out Messi's 2nd goal, out of this world.

Who the hell cares if you're playing the best game if you don't win it?
I would rather see Italy play like crap but win it all than play fantastically and lose.
I fear it will be like this:
Brazil 2-1 Argentina - Brazil will struggle, Argentina scores first, then Brazil comes back to tie.... It will look like Argentina is dominating the match and then Brazil guts them at the 90th or so....
Either that or 1-1 and penalties... (Brazil winning)

If it goes to penalties then I fancy Brazil, we have a pretty good history. I also feel that under pressure the Argentines will choke. However thats all speculation.
Come to think of it the last time I remember Brazil losing a Penalty shootout was in Copa America final in 95.

I was in Mexico when they played against Argentine, I was watching the game with an Argentine buddy, and damn those Mexicans almost killed the Argentine when they scored (well not seriously), very fun to watch a football game in South America, more emotional, but everyone loves it, even the Mexican girls went out of the shops to watch the game and such..
Very cool

The final proves that unfortunately (for the neutral) organized, tactical, defensive play won over the beautiful game. Problem with Argetina was that they had no Plan B, on set pieces they did the same thing time and time again. We won on all the headers because our players are bigger. Howevere I'm hopeful with the return of Ronaldinho and Kaka we won't play like this, not to mention with the introductions of Daniel Alves and Diego. We'll have a great defense and on top of that more striking options which has been very poor in this tournament.
@Azzurro Argentina beat the best European team (France) at home lol.
And don't forget that it was that French side that knocked out Brazil during the World Cup... twice in fact...

I was in Venezuela at the time of the Copa Americana. It was pretty cool and made the country appreciate soccer more since baseball is the dominant sport there. The country from which the most hispanics in the MLB come from is Domincan Republic and then Venezuela.
However, everyone was dissapointed when Venezeula got knocked out and majority of the people i knew wanted Argentina to win. I really wish i could have gone to one of the games but the final was in Maracaibo and i was in Maracay which are very far.
